Perseid annual meteor shower puts on celestial display

Skygazers' across parts of the planet have been treated to a celestial display of the Perseid meteor shower.

At their most intense, the meteors can be seen at a rate of one per minute, although they will still be visible until 22 August.

But the emergence of a full moon has taken the shine off this year's show for some.

The spectacle is created when the Earth passes through a field of debris left by the Swift-Tuttle comet.

The event was being broadcast live by Nasa.

"The Perseids are one of the most reliable meteor showers and normally you can expect to see at least a few tens of meteors each hour if you're observing from a dark site," explained Robert Massey, deputy executive secretary for the Royal Astronomical Society.

"This is also a great example of a free astronomical spectacle and something you can enjoy without needing any special equipment," he told BBC News.

On Friday, the International Meteor Organization (IMO) was recording an average of 25 shooting stars an hour, with the figure set to increase as the the peak period approached.

Shell fights spill near North Sea oil platform

Oil giant Royal Dutch Shell has said it is working to stop a leak at one of its North Sea oil platforms.

The leak was found near the Gannet Alpha platform, 180 km (113 miles) from Aberdeen, Scotland.

Shell would not say how much oil had been released so far, merely describing it as "not a significant spill" and saying it had largely stemmed the leak.

One of the wells at the Gannet oilfield has been closed, but the company would not say if production was reduced.

The company said it had sent a clean-up vessel to the location and has a plane monitoring the surface.

It confirmed the leak was continuing, having been found in a flow line connecting an oil well to the platform.

Poland: Train passenger killed in derailment

A passenger train has crashed in central Poland, killing one passenger and injuring at least 40, police say.

The inter-city train from Warsaw to Katowice was derailed at the town of Baby, near the city of Piotrkow Trybunalski, emergency services said.

The engine and three of the carriages went off the tracks. It was not clear what caused the derailment.

Initial reports said four people had died, but police later revised the figure.

The accident happened at about 16:15 (14:15 GMT), around two hours after the train left the capital Warsaw.

"We heard a huge noise," passenger Marcin Chlebowski told Poland's TVN24 news channel.

"The first wagon was completely destroyed, windows smashed and its sides smashed. People remained calm - many were in shock - and rescue crews arrived rapidly."

The first carriage was reported to be lying on its side.

Firefighter Wlodzimierz Kapiec told TVN24 that the death toll could rise.

"We are told that people were hurled through windows and landed under the wagon which is lying on its side," he said.

Polish PKP railways spokesman Lukasz Kurpiewski told TVN24 that about 280 passengers were believed to have been on board the train.

Authorities said the driver would be questioned but had been badly shocked by the accident.

Honda plans $800m new Mexican car plant

Japanese car maker Honda Motors is to build a new factory to produce small cars for the North American market.

The Mexican plant will cost $800m (500m) to build, and will employ around 3,200 workers producing up to 200,000 cars a year.

The firm also announced plans to increase production at some of its plants in the US and Canada.

The company reduced production in some factories due to parts shortages following the Japanese tsunami.

Honda said it will re-instate a second shift at its Alliston plant in Canada that was cut following the disaster.

It will also add shifts to its US plants in Indiana and Ohio.

The new Mexican factory will start producing by 2014 to meet what the company believes will be increased demand for smaller vehicles.

"With growing demand for fuel-efficient vehicles this plant will increase Honda's ability to meet customer needs," said Tetsuo Iwamura, chief operating officer for Honda's North America region.

The plant will be built in the state of Guanajuato.

Honda recently announced an 88% fall in first-quarter profits after the 11 March earthquake and tsunami.

Honda said it made a net profit of 31.7bn yen ($408m; 248m) compared with 274bn yen a year earlier.

Syria: Clinton urges states to cut ties over crackdown

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has urged all countries to cut their political and economic ties with Syria.

She said buying oil and gas from Syria and exporting arms there were giving President Bashar al-Assad "comfort in his brutality".

Mrs Clinton's comments came as large anti-government protests continued despite a harsh army crackdown.

Activists said at least 16 people died on Friday as protesters came under fire in towns and cities across the country.

More than 1,700 people have died and tens of thousands have reportedly been arrested since the uprising against the 41-year rule of Mr Assad's family began in March.

Correspondents say there is little the US can do to directly pressure the Syrian regime, with which it has few ties or shared interests.

So Washington has been stepping up the pressure on Europe, Russia and China, to use the leverage that they do have, and on Friday Mrs Clinton extended the pressure to all those with ties to Damascus.

"We urge those countries still buying Syrian oil and gas, those countries still sending Assad weapons, those countries whose political and economic support give him comfort in his brutality, to get on the right side of history," she said.

Pakistan convicts seven over Rawalpindi army HQ attack

A military court in Pakistan has convicted seven people over an attack on army headquarters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi in 2009.

A former soldier was sentenced to death and six other people, five of them civilians, received prison sentences.

Eleven soldiers were killed when a group of militants wearing suicide vests stormed the headquarters.

The incident made international headlines and was hugely embarrassing for Pakistan's security forces.

The military court sentenced a retired army sepoy named as Aqeel, alias Dr Usman, to death, while another former soldier, Imran Siddiq, was given life imprisonment, Pakistani media reported.

Three civilians also received life sentences and two others were jailed for 10 and seven years respectively.

The civilians were convicted for helping the attackers, the Pakistani Express Tribune reported.

In the 2009 attack, militants seized hostages and held off army commandos for several hours.

Troops eventually freed 39 hostages, but 23 people were killed, including 11 troops, three hostages and nine attackers.

Bodies of abducted Afghan officials found in Wardak

The bodies of eight abducted Afghan security officials have been found in the east of the country.

The three intelligence officers and five policemen went missing on Thursday in Wardak, where 38 died when militants shot down a US helicopter last week.

Meanwhile, five family members were killed by a roadside bomb in Helmand.

The three women and two men were travelling by mini-van towards Lashkar Gah, the southern province's capital, when they hit the bomb.

There has been an increase in civilian deaths in Afghanistan this year, many caused by roadside bombs planted by the Taliban and al-Qaeda insurgents.

Afghan security forces and foreign troops are usually the intended targets.

    Berlin wall 50th anniversary

From its construction to the revolution that brought it down, Germany's infamous border divided a nation and tore families apart

Built with barbed wire and concrete, the wall stretched for 31 miles, separated East and West Berlin as a cold war divide, preventing East Germans from crossing to the west

Alabama's Jefferson County on Friday held off from filing for bankruptcy over a $3.14 billion bond debt and allowed more time for talks with creditors to try to thrash out a restructuring agreement.

The decision means Alabama's most-populous county will not—for the moment—declare what would be the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history over its sewer bond debt.

Heeding a plea from Alabama Governor Robert Bentley for more time to obtain more state financial support for a restructuring deal, county commissioners said they would extend by more than a month, until Sept. 16

The overhead stage rigging collapses into the crowd in front of the stage at the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand at the Indiana State Fair. The collapse occurred before Sugarland took the stage.

At least three people have died when a grandstand collapsed at a concert in the US state of Indiana, say reports.
The authorities said the stage came down during a storm at the Indiana State Fair as the country music band Sugarland were about the perform.

A number of people were reported to be trapped beneath the wreckage, said the Indiana Star newspaper - others were moved to a tunnel under the main stage.

The paper said winds of up to 60mph (96 km/h) had been felt at the site.
