Owen winner gives United friendly win over Barcelona

Michael Owen scored a 76th-minute winner as Manchester United beat European champions Barcelona 2-1 in a pre-season friendly in Washington DC.

In front of nearly 82,000 fans Nani put United ahead in the 22nd minute.

Barcelona, without Lionel Messi, equalised in the 70th minute with a stunning strike from Thiago Alcantara.

Owen latched on to a pass from Tom Cleverley to score the winner as United end their North American tour win five wins out of five.

Phone hacking row: Cameron 'must come clean' over Murdoch

Prime Minister David Cameron and his senior colleagues must "come clean" over their dealings with the Murdoch family, Labour has said.

The party has sent letters to Cabinet ministers, containing more than 50 questions it claims have still not been addressed by the coalition.

It comes in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "We moved quickly to publish all meetings with editors and proprietors."

But Labour is asking what discussions key ministers had with the Murdochs about their attempt to take full control of BSkyB.

The bid collapsed following intense pressure at the height of the hacking revelations.

Labour has demanded Mr Cameron reveals "the dates, nature and content of the discussions" he had with James or Rupert Murdoch as well as ex-News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks about the deal.

The party is also attempting to keep up the pressure on Mr Cameron and his colleagues about Andy Coulson, the former News of the World editor who then worked as Downing Street communications chief for seven months.

The letter calls on the Prime Minister to reveal if he spoke to Mr Coulson following his arrest.

Iranian sentenced to blinding for acid attack pardoned

An Iranian man who was ordered to be blinded for carrying out an acid attack on a woman has been pardoned by his victim, state television has said.

Ameneh Bahrami had demanded qisas, a rarely used retributive justice under Sharia law, but the report said she had forgone that right at the last minute.

A court had backed Ms Bahrami's demand in 2008 that Majid Movahedi be blinded.

He attacked Ms Bahrami in 2004 after she had refused his offer of marriage, leaving her severely disfigured.

Rights group Amnesty International had lobbied against the sentence, calling it "cruel and inhuman punishment amounting to torture".

Syrian unrest: Hama army raid 'kills dozens'

Syrian security forces have stormed the city of Hama and killed more than 80 people in a bid to crush a long-running anti-government protest, reports say.

Eyewitnesses said tanks and troops moved into the city earlier and have been firing on civilians. Hospitals say they are overflowing with casualties.

The government said troops had been sent in to remove barricades and roadblocks erected by the protesters.

US officials accused the government of waging "full-on warfare" on its people.

The assault was a last act of utter desperation by the Syrian government, said JJ Harder, a US embassy spokesman in the capital, Damascus.

Russia: Nine drown as Moscow pleasure boat sinks

A pleasure boat has sunk on the Moscow River in Russia's capital, drowning nine people, officials say.

Seven of the 16 on board were rescued, they said. The boat is reported to have been hosting a birthday party and is suspected to have been overcrowded.

Reports say the boat, the Swallow, collided with a barge in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The accident comes three weeks after a tourist boat sank on the Volga river in Tatarstan, killing more than 100.

China: Unrest in Kashgar, Xinjiang, leaves 15 dead

Weekend unrest in Kashgar, in China's western Xinjiang region, has left at least 15 people dead, state media say.

The violence began on Saturday when two men killed a truck driver, then drove his lorry into pedestrians and attacked them with knives, killing six. One of the attackers also died.

On Sunday an explosion killed three people and police shot dead "four suspects", the Xinhua agency said.

Xinjiang has a Muslim Uighur minority and has seen serious ethnic tension.

The BBC's Martin Patience in Beijing says there are reports of further clashes in the city on Sunday.

India 'Slutwalk' sex harassment protest held in Delhi

A rally has taken place in India's capital inspired by the "Slutwalk" protests held in a number of countries.

The protest is to challenge the notion that the way a woman looks can excuse sexual abuse or taunting - "Eve teasing" as it is known in India.

Hundreds took part in Delhi, though there was little of the skimpy dressing that has marked protests elsewhere.

The protests originated in Canada after a policeman said women could avoid rape by not dressing like "sluts".

Man charged over Old Trafford florist robbery

An 18-year-old man has been charged with robbery in connection with a raid at a florist shop in Greater Manchester where his brother died of stab wounds.

Kyle Mullings, 18, of no fixed address, is due before Trafford magistrates on Monday, police said.

A 72-year-old shopkeeper has been bailed on suspicion of murder after a suspected armed robber was stabbed.

Gary Mullings, 30, died in hospital following the incident at the shop in Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Cecil Coley, who runs the shop in Shrewsbury Street, was also taken to hospital before being arrested.

He has been bailed until 9 September pending further inquiries.

A post-mortem examination found Mr Mullings, from New Moston in Manchester, died from stab wounds.

Ian Bell's controversial run-out against India

Images of one of the most bizarre run-outs in Test cricket history - a decision subsequently overturned after India withdrew their appeal - during the third day of the second Test between England and India at Trent Bridge

Ian Bell and Eoin Morgan's fourth wicket partnership had been a prosperous one for England until the final delivery before tea, which Morgan cut towards the boundary. Believing the ball to have hit the boundary rope, Bell left his crease and began walking back towards the pavilion for tea only to have his bails removed by Abhinav Mukund

Mukund (pictured knocking off the bails) suspected that Morgan's delivery had not in fact hit the boundary rope and that play was therefore still active

TV replays showed he was correct - the ball was fielded inches from the boundary

Confusion descended as the umpires Marais Erasmus and Asaf Rauf were asked by the Indians to grant the wicket
