DUBLIN (AFP) - Former Irish prime minister Albert Reynolds, a central figure in the Northern Ireland peace process who helped broker the 1994 Irish Republican Army ceasefire, has died aged 81, Irish broadcaster RTE reported on Thursday.

Mr Reynolds served as taoiseach twice, once in 1992 and then again in 1993-94, but had recently been suffering from the last stages of Alzheimer's disease, his son Philip revealed earlier this week.

Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams paid tribute on Twitter, sending a message of support to Reynolds' family. "Albert acted on North when it mattered. RIP," he said.

Northern Ireland's Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, also a member of Sinn Fein, also lauded Mr Reynolds' role in bringing peace to Northern Ireland.

Human rights campaigner Helen Bamber dies, aged 89

Human rights campaigner Helen Bamber has died, aged 89, the charitable foundation set up in her name has said.

Mrs Bamber began helping victims of torture and atrocities of war in 1945, when she worked with survivors of the Nazi Holocaust.

In a career lasting nearly 70 years she worked to promote human rights and set up the Helen Bamber Foundation in 2005.

Film stars Colin Firth and Emma Thompson paid tribute to a "human rights icon".

In a statement Mrs Bamber's foundation said it was "with deep anguish" that it was announcing the death of its founder.

It said she had helped "tens of thousands of men, women and children to confront the horror and brutality of their experiences".

    'Life-changing'

Mrs Bamber, who had Polish Jewish ancestry, was born in north London in 1925 and lived in the area for the majority of her life.

As a teenager she had joined protesters opposing Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists.

In 1945, she was a member of one of the first relief teams to enter the liberated Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, helping survivors and the "many thousands" from the camps who remained displaced after the war ended.

Two years later, she was appointed to the Committee for the Care of Children from Concentration Camps, to take care of 722 young orphan children who had been incarcerated at Auschwitz concentration camp.

She helped to establish the first medical group in the British section of Amnesty International, which recorded testimony and documented evidence of human rights violations.

Mrs Bamber founded the Medical Foundation for Victims of Torture in 1985 and was named European Woman of Achievement in 1993.

She was awarded an OBE in 1997.

She also helped with the 2013 film The Railway Man - about a British officer captured by the Japanese in the Second World War - in which Firth starred.

The actor said his first meeting with Ms Bamber had been "life-changing", saying the compassion she had showed touched him for life.

    'Great listener'

"I marvelled that anyone could find the strength to engage with so many desperate stories without being engulfed by them," Firth said.

"Her courage, wisdom and pragmatism were formidable."

Emma Thompson, who is president of the Helen Bamber Foundation, said Mrs Bamber was a "great listener and an incredible interpreter" who never let her "imagination run dry".

TJ Birdie, executive director of the Helen Bamber Foundation, said Mrs Bamber was a "heroine in so many people's stories", helping those whose "voices have been taken away".

She said "tens of thousands of survivors and their families know that Helen personally changed their lives, and many more have been spared further atrocity by her work".

Nagel, veteran astronaut who flew on four shuttles, dies at 67
    By Cindy George | August 22, 2014 | Updated: August 23, 2014 12:47am

Steven R. Nagel, a veteran astronaut who flew four space shuttle flights on as many different orbiters, died on Thursday after a long illness.

    He was 67.

Nagel was an Air Force test pilot before becoming a NASA astronaut in 1979 and logging 723 hours in space.

He served as a mission specialist during a June 1985 Discovery flight and piloted the Challenger in October of the same year. He commanded his two final missions to space: An Atlantis flight in April 1991 and a 10-day jaunt on Columbia in April 1993.

"It will always be my honor to know Steve," Brian Kelly, director of flight operations, said in a NASA news release. "He blessed our lives in many ways. His humor, positive approach to life and constant smile is something we will all cherish. His service to our great nation and NASA is inspirational."

Nagel, who was born on Oct. 27, 1946, in Canton, Ill., earned a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Illinois in 1969 and a master's degree in mechanical engineering in 1978 from California State University at Fresno.

After retiring from the U.S. Air Force in 1995, Nagel immediately became a deputy director for Johnson Space Center's safety, reliability and quality assurance office. The next year, he moved to the aircraft operations division where he served as a research pilot, chief of aviation safety and deputy chief.

When Nagel retired from NASA in 2011, he joined the University of Missouri's College of Engineering where he taught in the department of mechanical & aerospace engineering. At the time of his death, he was listed as living in Columbia, Missouri.

One of Nagel's final Houston-area public appearances was in 2009, when he served as grand marshal of the Tomball Holiday Parade.

He is survived by his wife, Linda, and two daughters, Lauren and Whitney.

Robert Hansen Dies; Notorious Alaska Serial Killer Was Known As The 'Butcher Baker'
    AP | By RACHEL D'ORO
Posted: 08/22/2014 6:19 am EDT Updated: 08/22/2014 6:59 am EDT

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Convicted Alaska serial killer Robert Hansen, who gained the nickname of "the Butcher Baker" for abducting and hunting down women in the wilderness during the state's oil pipeline construction boom in the 1970s, has died at age 75.

Hansen died Thursday at Alaska Regional Hospital after being in declining health for the past year, Alaska Department of Corrections spokeswoman Sherrie Daigle said. Hansen had a "do not resuscitate" order on file with the agency, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Hansen was convicted in 1984 after confessing to killing 17 women, mostly dancers and prostitutes, during a 12-year span. Hansen was convicted of just four of the murders in a deal that spared him having to go to trial 17 times.

The Anchorage baker also confessed to raping another 30 women in that time.

Decades later in 2006, Hansen rejected a request to be interviewed by The Associated Press.

"I do not care so much for myself, but you journalist (sic) have hurt my family so very much," Hansen wrote in a typo-riddled, unsigned letter from Alaska's Spring Creek Correctional Center in Seward.

Hansen was the subject of a 2013 film titled, "The Frozen Ground," which starred Nicolas Cage as an Alaska State Trooper investigating the slayings. Actor John Cusack portrayed Hansen.

Hansen was serving a 461-year sentence in Alaska at the time of his death. He had been incarcerated at the Seward state prison and was moved May 11, 2014, to the Anchorage Correctional Center to receive medical attention.

Hansen owned a bakery in a downtown mini-mall in the 1970s and 1980s. He lived across town with his wife and children, who knew nothing of his other life.

Construction of the 800-mile trans-Alaska oil pipeline in the 1970s brought prostitutes, pimps, con artists and drug dealers to Alaska's largest city, all aiming to separate construction workers from some of the big money they were pulling in. Many who looked for quick riches left as abruptly as they arrived in Anchorage, making sudden disappearances commonplace.

Glenn Flothe, a then-trooper who helped put Hansen behind bars, told the Anchorage Daily News in 2008 that Hansen's victims initially included any woman who caught his eye, but Hansen quickly learned that strippers and prostitutes were harder to track and less likely to be missed.

Hansen would abduct the women and take them to remote places outside the city. Sometimes, he would drive, and other times he would fly his private plane. A licensed pilot, Hansen told investigators one of his favorite spots to take his victims was the Knik River northeast of Anchorage.

Investigators have said that in some instances Hansen would rape the women but return them to Anchorage, warning them not to contact authorities. Other times, he would let the women go free in the wilderness and then hunt them with his rifle.

Only 12 bodies of the 17 women Hansen confessed to killing have been found. The others were never located.

This connection, that the famous actor/director and equally famous naturalist were brothers, is one I bet many people haven't gotten.

I always thought Dickie would have looked better whispering in the foreground of a lot of Zebra's arses, tbh.

Sadly it's been removed from Youtube by the miserable beeb, but Spike Milligan's piss take of David Attenborough's Life On Earth was just pure comedy gold.

I think it was in the "Q" series.

Bill Kerr, Australian actor and radio star, dies aged 92

Bill Kerr enjoyed success as a radio comedian in the 1950s

Australian actor Bill Kerr, "the boy from Wagga Wagga" who became one of Tony Hancock's radio sidekicks in the 1950s, has died in Perth aged 92.

Born in Cape Town in June 1922, he was raised in Australia and became a radio and vaudeville star before moving to the UK in 1947 to further his career.

Appearances in Hancock's Half Hour, The Dam Busters and Doctor Who followed, as did a role in 1960s TV drama Compact.

Returning to Australia in 1979, he had a key role in 1981 film Gallipoli.

His voice is the first to be heard in Peter Weir's World War One epic, exhorting its young sprinter hero to run "as fast as a leopard".

He went on to be seen in TV mini-series Anzacs, horror film Razorback and the 2003 version of Peter Pan.

According to family members, Kerr was watching television at his home in western Australia when he passed away.

"Mum said she could hear him laughing to Seinfeld," his son Wilton told ABC News. "That was one of his favourite shows."

Kerr (r) is remembered fondly for his appearances with Sid James and Tony Hancock in Hancock's Half Hour

Known for his catchphrase "I'm only here for four minutes", Kerr made his stage debut in a touring production when he was still a babe in his mother's arms.

"I was such a hit, I retired in 1922 and made a comeback at seven," he would later recall.

A "Huckleberry Finn life" in New South Wales followed for a child star who was once described as "the Jackie Coogan of Australian vaudeville".

He made his first film appearance in 1933's Harmony Row, in which he was billed as "Willie" Kerr.

Kerr enjoyed his greatest success in the 1950s and 1960s, appearing alongside such comedy greats as Sid James, Spike Milligan, Kenneth Williams and Peter Sellers.

His laconic Australian drawl saw him often cast as a slow-witted simpleton who could serve as the butt of his co-stars' jokes.

His role as Giles Kent in Doctor Who adventure The Enemy of the World saw him sharing the screen with Patrick Troughton, the second Doctor.

Believed missing for many years, a complete version of the six-part story, originally broadcast in 1967-68, was found last year at a TV station in Nigeria.

Hippies around the world will be in mourning.

Glenn Cornick, the original bass player in the rock band Jethro Tull, died of congestive heart failure at his home in Hilo, Hawaii, on Thursday.

Drew Cornick says his 67-year-old father had been receiving hospice care.
Cornick performed with Jethro Tull from its inception in late 1967 until 1970.

The band's vocalist and floutist, Ian Anderson, says on the band's website that Cornick brought bravado to Jethro Tull's early stage performances. Anderson says Cornick made considerable contributions to the music scene.

Drew Cornick says his father was brilliant and cantankerous until the day he passed away.

In addition to his son Drew, Cornick is survived by his wife, Brigitte Martinez-Cornick of Hilo; a daughter, Molly Cornick; and another son, Alex Cornick.

Scott Rogers: US TV host and ex-Suffolk teacher shot dead

Scott Rogers hosted The Around Town Show on WAFB-TV

A US television host and former Suffolk dance school teacher was shot dead by his son-in-law at his home in Louisiana, police have said.

Scott Rogers, 52, a presenter for WAFB-TV, was found in Iberville, Baton Rouge on Wednesday, local police said.

Sheriff Brett Stassi said it was thought Mr Rogers was shot by Mathew Hodgkinson, also his former lover, in a "murder and attempted suicide".

Mr Hodgkinson, 36, is in a coma in a US hospital, said Mr Stassi.

    'Gun to his head'

Mr Stassi, the sheriff of police in Iberville, told the BBC: "It looked like a murder and failed attempted suicide. Scott was shot in his bed, under the covers, tucked neatly in.

"It looks like Mathew put the gun to his own head... he was seriously wounded but still alive.

"He's still in a critical condition in an induced coma."

Mr Stassi said his deputy found a note next to the bed.

"We think Mathew wrote it and maybe even put it there after Scott was deceased," he said.

    'Unhealthy atmosphere'

Mr Hodgkinson, who was married to Mr Rogers' daughter Kimmy, joined Mr Rogers in America to work as a producer on the Around Town Show aired by WAFB-TV.

In 1994, BBC Look East reported that Suffolk County Council had "taken the unusual step" of issuing a warning to parents about a school for the performing arts in Bury St Edmunds.

There were claims of an "unhealthy atmosphere" similar to "a religious or supposedly religious cult" at the school founded by Mr Rogers, the East Anglian Daily Times has reported.

Mr Rogers was known as Richard Scott-Rogers in the UK.

Mr Hodgkinson, a former pupil of the Academy of Dance and Performing Arts in Bury St Edmunds, was also known as Mathew Hodgkins.

Mr Stassi said witness statements suggested Mr Hodgkinson was both Mr Rogers' son-in-law and former lover and lived at the Rogers property.

Jimi Jamison, Soaring Voice of Survivor, Dies at 63
Jimi Jamison, 63, whose soaring tenor powered many hits for the arena rock band Survivor, died Sunday night, the band confirmed Monday.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the band said: "The entire Survivor family is very shocked and saddened by the passing of our brother Jimi Jamison. Our thoughts, love and prayers go out to his family and friends." No cause of death was given, but TMZ quoted Jamison's booking agent as saying he died of a heart attack at his home in Memphis, Tennessee.

Jamison joined, left and rejoined Survivor many times after officially debuting with the band in 1984 for the single "The Moment of Truth," the theme song from the movie "The Karate Kid." His first album with Survivor was the platinum-selling album "Vital Signs," which spun off several hits, including "I Can't Hold Back," "High on You" and "The Search Is Over," which reached No. 4 on the Billboard charts. He also co-wrote and sang "I'm Always Here," the theme song from the TV series "Baywatch."

Survivor's biggest hit, "Eye of the Tiger" — which shot to popularity as part of the soundtrack for "Rocky III" — came in 1982, two years before Jamison joined the band. But he did do the vocals for another "Rocky"-related hit: "Burning Heart" from "Rocky IV" in 1985.

John A. Walker Jr. dies at 77; masterminded family spy operation
    BY STEVE CHAWKINS
Los Angeles TimesSeptember 1, 2014 Updated 7 hours ago

John A. Walker Jr., a convicted spy who masterminded a family operation that sold military secrets for nearly two decades and enabled the Soviet Union to decipher more than 1 million classified messages sent and received by U.S. Navy vessels, has died in a prison hospital. He was 77.

His death Thursday at a penitentiary in Butner, N.C., was confirmed by Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesman Chris Burke. The cause was not disclosed.

The FBI arrested Walker in 1985 with his son Michael, brother Arthur and best friend Jerry Whitworth. Arthur died in the same prison hospital in July. Officials said it was one of the most damaging U.S. espionage rings ever uncovered.

John Walker was a Navy warrant officer when he started selling shipboard secrets to bail himself out of financial problems at a failing South Carolina bar he owned. He lured family members into the spy operation with prolonged sales pitches, and once even used his mother, Peggy, as an unwitting courier. When he treated her to a European vacation in 1979, he had her carry back a money belt in which he had secretly stashed $24,000 in KGB earnings.

Walker made more than $1 million as a spy, officials estimated.

He finally was turned in by his ex-wife, Barbara Crowley Walker, who knew about his spying for years, and his daughter Laura, whom he had unsuccessfully tried to recruit. He later described them as part of "the group of misfits and weaklings that brought me down."

After Walker pleaded guilty to espionage in 1986, U.S. District Judge Alexander Harvey II gave him a life sentence and denounced him in court.

"Your motive was pure greed and you were paid handsomely for your traitorous acts," the judge said. "I look in vain for some redeeming aspect of your character."

Walker said he saw no contradiction in working for both the Navy and the KGB.

"The fact of the matter is I did perfect work for both governments at the same time," he told the Washington Post in 1989. "Neither of them have complaint. My work for the U.S. Navy was extraordinary, exemplary. My work for the Soviets was also exemplary."

In his 2008 autobiography, "My Life As a Spy, Walker said he had been working for the greater good. In earlier interviews, he unhesitatingly said he did it for the money, but in his book, he claimed to be "reducing the prospect of war" by making information available to both sides.

American officials said the secret documents gave the Soviet Union a trove of invaluable information about U.S. military operations, including the inner workings of American spy satellites, the authentication codes required to launch nuclear missiles, and the precise location of the underwater sensors used to track Russian submarines.

Vitaly Yurchenko, a high-ranking KGB agent who briefly defected to the U.S., called Walker's family network "the most important operation in the KGB's history."

Born in Washington, D.C., on July 28, 1937, Walker had an unhappy childhood in Scranton, Pa., where his alcoholic father was a late-night radio disc jockey. After several brushes with the law, Walker dropped out of high school at 17. At the urging of his older brother Arthur, who was by then a sailor, John Walker joined the Navy.

As a communications technician stationed in Norfolk, Va., Walker illegally copied a sheaf of documents about secret Navy codes. In 1968, he walked them into the Soviet Embassy in Washington. It was the first of his contacts with KGB agents, many of which took place in Vienna.

When the Navy required a routine renewal of Walker's top-secret security clearance, he forged the necessary forms. Meanwhile, he photographed documents with a miniature camera or copied them on the office photocopier.

"Kmart protects their toothpaste better than the Navy protects their top secrets," he once told a reporter.

After retiring from the Navy in 1976, Walker became a private investigator. But he kept the secrets flowing with material supplied by his Navy friend, radioman Jerry Whitworth. In later years, he recruited his brother Arthur, a Navy retiree who worked for a defense contractor, and his son Michael, a sailor on the aircraft carrier Nimitz.

Arthur was serving a life sentence when he died. Whitworth was given a sentence of 365 years.

In a deal with prosecutors, John Walker agreed to plead guilty in return for giving investigators a full accounting of his espionage and securing a less severe prison term for his son. Michael received a 25-year sentence and was released in 2000.

Even when facing many years in prison, Walker was unrepentant.

In an interview with Pete Earley, author of a 1988 book about the case called "Family of Spies," Walker still seemed astounded that FBI agents were so unappreciative when they arrested him.

"Here I was, a person who had run a successful - perhaps the most successful - spy ring in the nation's history, and all these bastards were worried about was getting out a goddamn press release," he said. "Getting public attention was more important than using me as a double agent."

Ironically though, he joined the group after "Eye of the Tiger", the previous lead singer was who sang that song and he later died of cancer. Still he had quite a few hits after he joined..
