Hard to respect a bloke with such a weakness of character….

Allman struggled for decades with cocaine, heroin and alcohol addictions. When the band chartered a Boeing 720 he was touched to find that someone had spelt Welcome Allman Bros in cocaine on the bar. The message was almost certainly the work of John “Scooter” Herring, their road manager, who served as Gregg’s personal valet and drug dealer. Herring was convicted in 1976 on five counts of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and was jailed for 75 years.
Allman testified against him in return for immunity from prosecution, a betrayal that resulted in the Allman Brothers breaking up and his bandmates refusing to have anything to do with him.
For years afterwards Allman was heckled at concerts by members of the audience shouting “Nark” at him.

Good points, it brings up the old question, what do you do when the artist is a wally or worse but the art/music is good? Ignore his character or ignore his art?

There will be tears in Weatherfield tonight...

Former Coronation Street star Roy Barraclough dies, aged 81
The actor played scheming Alec Gilroy on the ITV soap

Roy Barraclough - who played shifty Rovers Return landlord Alec Gilroy on Coronation Street - has died at the age of 81.
His passing was announced by his agent, who said that Barraclough had died today following a short illness.
As well as his stint behind the bar as the husband of Bet Lynch, Barraclough was also well known as one half of the Cissie and Ada double act with Les Dawson.
Prior to making his debut as Alec in June 1972, Preston-born Barraclough had previously played four different roles on the ITV soap, but it was his popular partnership with Julie Goodyear that made him a hit with Corrie fans.

After several departures and comebacks, Barraclough finally left Coronation Street at the end of 1998 went on to appear in Last of the Summer Wine, Last Tango in Halifax and All the Small Things. In 2006, Barraclough was also awarded the MBE for his charity work.
His last screen credit saw him playing Mr Grainger in the BBC's remake of Are You Being Served? in 2016.

Speaking last year, the actor criticised Coronation Street's plans to move to six episodes a week, saying: "I don’t wish them ill but I fear it will all end in tears – the quality is bound to suffer.
"The actors will not be able to cope, so they will inevitably have to get in more actors to play more characters. With such a huge cast it is very difficult to pull that off. Of course it can be done, but just how well is another matter. It is a mistake, it’s pure overkill."
But he did remember his years in Weatherfield with fondness, commenting to the Daily Mirror: "They were undoubtedly some of my best years. I look back on them with great affection."

Wetsuit pioneer Jack O'Neill dies aged 94

World famous surfer and wetsuit pioneer Jack O'Neill has died at the age of 94.

According to a statement released by his family the surfing icon, who was famously known for wearing a distinctive eye patch - the result of a surf injury where he hit his board while riding a wave - died at home in Santa Cruz surrounded by his family.

Described as "soulful and encouraging" in a post on the official Facebook page of the company he founded, Mr O'Neill was remembered for his passions as a "surfer, ocean lover, boating enthusiast, wetsuit pioneer, [and] balloonist".

Mr O'Neill moved with his wife to San Francisco's Ocean Beach neighbourhood in the early 1950s where in a bid to be able to surf longer in the cold Northern California ocean he began experimenting with various materials to create a wetsuit to protect him from the chill.

After experimenting with different materials he invented the first neoprene wetsuit - an invention that led to him setting up a surf shop, then another, and by the 1980s saw the subsequent O'Neill brand become the largest recreation wetsuit designer and manufacturer in the world.

According to his family he often look back on how far he had come, saying: "All my friends said, 'O'Neill, you will sell to five friends on the beach and then you will be out of business'."

In his later years Mr O'Neill set up the O'Neill Sea Odyssey - a marine and environmental education programme for children that was founded in 1996 and which he classed as his proudest achievement.

Talking about the programme he would say: "The ocean is alive and we've got to take care of it. There is no doubt in my mind that the O'Neil Sea Odyssey is the best thing I've ever done."

Peter Sallis, Voice of Wallace in 'Wallace & Gromit' Films, Dies at 96
10:09 AM PDT 6/5/2017 by Alex Ritman

Peter Sallis, a much-loved face on British TV and known internationally as the voice of Wallace in the Wallace & Gromit animated films, has died. He was 96.

The actor's agent announced the news Monday, saying he had died peacefully with his family by his side on June 2.

In the U.K., Sallis was known for decades as the flat-capped and mild-mannered Norman Clegg from the long-running comedy series Last of the Summer Wine. He starred in the show from its very first episode in 1973 right up until its end in 2010; the only actor to appear in all 295 episodes.

But it was his vocal work as Wallace in Nick Park's award-winning animated films that gave him a global legacy.

Sallis voiced cheery, eccentric and cheese-loving inventor in 1989's BAFTA-winning A Grand Day Out, following this up with the Oscar-winning films The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave and The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, for which he also won an Annie Award for best voice acting in an animated feature production. His final Wallace & Gromit film was 2008's A Matter of Loaf and Death.

The actor often spoke about his pleasure at his work as Wallace, saying that it "raised his standing a few notches in the public eye," and that "to be still be involved in a project like this at my age is heartwarming."

I had just finished watching an episode of "Last Of The Summer Wine" when I turned over to see Sky News. First thing I saw at the bottom of the screen was the report of his death.

He was a wonderful actor and played his part superbly.

Adnan Khashoggi, wealthy arms dealer and Iran-Contra figure, dies at 81

Saudi Arabian arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi, once one of the world's richest men who was implicated in the Iran-Contra affair, has died at 81.

A statement from his family says Khashoggi died in London on Tuesday. He had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

Khashoggi was notorious for his lavish lifestyle. He was estimated to be worth about $4 billion at the peak of his wealth in the 1970s.

Khashoggi was a man of connections. His nephew Dodi Fayed was Princess Diana's paramour and died with her in a car crash in Paris in 1997. Khashoggi also briefly owned the Beverly Hills home that was built for Charlie Chaplin in 1922.

His family says he "combined commercial acumen with an overriding loyalty to his country, the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. His work always furthered the interests of his country."

Cuban musician Ernesto 'Tito' Puentes dies, aged 88

By Isabelle Martinetti Issued on 08-06-2017 Modified 08-06-2017 to 16:50

Cuban conductor and trumpet player Ernesto ‘Tito’ Puentes died on Thursday morning in Montpellier, southern France, where he lived.

"The most Parisian of the Cubans has gone to join other salseros for an eternal descarga (jam session)", his manager Jean-Louis Perrier said.

‘Tito’ was born on 7 November,1928, in Havana where he started playing the trumpet with his two uncles.

He became famous in the 40’s before building an international reputation with more than 200 albums released in fifty years.

    Afro-Cuban music

"When I played jazz, my compatriots used to tell me that I wasn’t Cuban, but jazzman. Today one call me salsero - and I prefer the term Afro-Cuban music than salsa that seems inappropriate to me especially because it was invented by Americans […]," he said.

"Me, I’m more a musician. I try to integrate European and African influences in my music. My music is plural."

Tito Puentes left Cuba in the 1950’s for a one year tour of Europe, in the Middle-East and in Lebanon. When the manager left his musicians distressed without any cash at the end of the tour, he went to live in France.

In the 1970’s, he played with French singers Sylvie Vartan, Michel Delpech, Claude François, Nino Ferrer, Eddy Mitchell or Joe Dassin.

He was also conductor and arranger for a big band playing with Cameroonese musician Manu Dibango.

In 1995, he created his own big bang made up of 20 musicians from Cuba, Venezuela or Colombia.

For his last album Gracias (2012) he had invited Manu Dibango and Ibrahim Maalouf.

Tito and his big bang played for the last time in July 2015 at the Tempo Latino festival in Vic-Fezensac in southwestern France, added his manager Jean-Louis Perrier.

    Anita Pallenberg died. Aged 73.
    Hope Kieth doesn't follow.

Anita Pallenberg, actor, model and muse to the Rolling Stones, dies aged 73
Partner to both Brian Jones and Keith Richards, Pallenberg went on to appear alongside Mick Jagger in Performance and pursued a career in fashion

The actor and model Anita Pallenberg, who was a muse to the Rolling Stones and appeared alongside Mick Jagger in the cult film Performance, has died at the age of 73.

Pallenberg’s death was announced on Instagram by her friend, the actor Stella Schnabel. The cause of death is currently unknown.

Pallenberg was born in German-occupied Rome in January 1944. Her father was an Italian travel agent and artist, while her mother was a German secretary. After being expelled from German boarding school aged 16, she began modelling, first in Italy and later in New York, where she spent time at Andy Warhol’s Factory.

In 1965 Pallenberg attended a Rolling Stones concert and managed to get backstage, where she met the band. It would lead to a relationship with Stones guitarist Brian Jones, which Pallenberg said soon turned violent. She left Jones for Keith Richards, and the pair settled in London, where they would have three children. The pair struggled with drug abuse and would later separate in 1980.

During her time with the Stones, Pallenberg became a muse for the band. She provided backing vocals for Sympathy for the Devil and Mick Jagger was said to have remixed tracks on the band’s 1968 album Beggars Banquet based on her feedback. Pallenberg and Jagger would later star together in Nicolas Roeg’s 1970 crime drama Performance.

Pallenberg would go on to act in a number of other films, portraying The Black Queen in Barbarella, and appearing in the 1968 sex farce Candy, alongside Marlon Brando and Richard Burton. She would resume her acting career in her 60s, featuring in Abel Ferrara’s Go Go Tales (2007), and Harmony Korine’s Mister Lonely (2007), among others.

In her later years Pallenberg pursued a career in fashion, completing a four-year fashion and textile degree at Central Saint Martins in 1994. However, she , describing the industry as “too nasty, too rip-off, too hard”. Pallenberg also considered writing a memoir but was concerned it would be too “salacious”.

“I had several publishers and they were all the same,” she told the Guardian’s Lynn Barber in 2008. “They all wanted salacious. And everybody is writing autobiographies and that’s one reason why I’m not going to do it. If young Posh Spice can write her autobiography, then I don’t want to write one!’

Marianne Faithfull lead the tributes to the late star. “Anita used to say that we (the two of us) are light years ahead of the Rolling Stones,” she posted on Facebook. “Witty and probably true!”

She added: “We had good times and bad times, but I only remember the good times now. She taught me so much, especially after we got clean; it was very good, and so much fun! Farewell my love, go well.”

Pallenberg is survived by two children with Richards, Marlon and Angela. Their second son, Tara, died during infancy in 1976.
