About 100 fires are burning in hot, windy conditions across NSW.
(ABC News)

More than 1,000 firefighters are on the job across the state.
(AAP: Dean Lewins)

Fire crews and residents across much of New South Wales are awaiting a change in wind direction, after a strenuous day of battling heat, low humidity and strong winds.

About 1,000 firefighters are on the ground as almost 100 blazes continue, the worst of them in the state's central west.

It has been a scorcher across much of the state today, with temperatures hovering around 40 degrees.

In Sydney the mercury climbed to 42.5 degrees at the airport, while at Walgett in the state's north-west it was 43 degrees.

The weather bureau's Chris Webb says two changes are expected to move through the state in the next 12 hours, eventually bringing showers and cooler temperatures.

A coastal southerly is due to push through early tomorrow morning, but in the meantime a south-westerly is moving across the state, bringing thunderstorms and lightning strikes.

The bureau's Michael Logan says a band of storms moved through the Cowra area this afternoon, travelling at 90 kilometres per hour. They brought lightning strikes but not much rain, increasing the chance of fires.

"Some tough conditions for the firies to get through tonight, with initially the hot conditions and then two wind changes, but some better firefighting conditions tomorrow," said Mr Webb.

There will be no total fire bans in place in New South Wales tomorrow.

Emergency warnings

Bushfire emergency warnings are in place for parts of the central west but warnings for the Laguna area in the Hunter region and the Glen Davis area have been downgraded.

The most concerning fire is in the Rylstone/Kandos area, where containment lines have been broken.

The blaze has burned out more than 1,200 hectares of bush and is heading towards Rylstone, Kandos and Clandulla; about 5pm AEDT it was just three kilometres to the west of Rylstone.

The blaze has scorched hundreds of hectares of tinder-dry bush and grass; it has also destroyed a building believed to be a small cottage. The Rylstone Hospital and a nearby retirement home, Ada Cottage, have been evacuated as a precaution. The Cudgegong road has been closed due to this fire.

But the Rural Fire Service says there has already been a slight change in weather conditions, causing a drop in temperatures and wind speed and a rise in humidity.

Firefighters hope that will give them a chance to carry out back-burning along Cudgegong Road.

They are also working to put in place a new containment line 1.5 kilometres to the west of Rylstone.

However, firefighters are bracing for the more volatile weather forecast for later tonight, which is expected to trigger lightning strikes.

Homes under threat

Some families have left their homes because of a big grassfire north of Orange in the New South Wales central west.

The ABC has spoken to one woman who took her children to safety in Orange while her husband stayed and saw the fire burn paddocks at their property in the Kangaroobie area.

The fire front is about five kilometres north of Orange and parallel to the Kangaroobie road.

ABC correspondent and Rural Fire Service volunteer Chris Googe says it is an area of small acreages and about 20 properties are under threat.

"Homes are under threat and they will be for a little bit of time yet until we can get a firm grasp on exactly where this fire's going and how fast it's travelling," he said.

"But we're doing our best to get around it at the moment."

Air crane on standby

The New South Wales Rural Fire Service has welcomed a giant waterbombing air crane to add to the resources of firefighters.

The air crane shipped to Australia from the United States arrived at Sydney's Bankstown Airport this afternoon, but it is unclear which fire it will be sent to first.

It is one of two air cranes to be based in New South Wales this bushfire season and adds to a fleet of another 100 planes for waterbombing, mapping, transport and fire detection.

Seventy of those aircraft are in use across the state today.
A 12-year-old schoolboy was bashed by two groups of students because of a Facebook page which told them it was "Kick a Ginger Day".
The red-haired student from Los Angeles was kicked and punched first by several seventh grade students and then some eighth grade students, the KTLA TV network reports.
"He was kicked and hit with fists in various areas of the body," Lt. Richard Erickson, from the Los Angeles County sheriff's department, said.
Detectives believe the attacks were fuelled by Facebook messages which told students November 20 was "Kick a Ginger Day".
A 2005 episode of the animated series South Park originally floated the tongue-in-cheek idea of a "Kick a Ginger Day" as a way of discriminating against "gingers", a term used to describe people with red hair.
The boy was treated by a school nurse after the attacks.
Police are now investigating whether assault charges can be laid.

MORE than $1 million of heroin concealed inside tiles normally used for indoor games has arrived at Sydney International Airport, police said.

The heroin was allegedly found inside four medium-sized black cases of mahjong and domino tiles.

"The tiles appeared to be of poor quality and were subjected to further tests by Customs and Border Protection Officers," an Australian Federal Police spokesman said.

The heroin was found after police drilled into a mahjong tile.

The discovery has led to the arrest of a 30-year-old Ashcroft man, who arrived in Sydney on November 20 from Vietnam.

It will be alleged in court he concealed approximately 5.5kg of heroin worth an estimated street value of $1.25 million.

The man was charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug into Australia, and will appear at Parramatta Local Court today.

The maximum penalty for the offence is 25 years' imprisonment and/or a $550,000 fine.
Twin Krishna has woken from her medically induced coma and blown her guardian a long-awaited raspberry.
Children First Foundation spokeswoman Moira Kelly says Krishna woke about 8:00 (AEDT) last night.
"Krishna has woken up," she told reporters outside Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital today.
"I got my raspberry."
Krishna and her twin Trishna, who were born joined at the head, were separated by a 16-member medical team on Tuesday.
Trishna woke up on Thursday morning after the marathon 32-hour surgery, but Krishna, who suffered more complications, took longer to emerge from her medically induced sleep.
Ms Kelly had said she would not relax until she saw Krishna blow her a raspberry.
On Saturday, she said Krishna was neurologically sound.
Ms Kelly said she "did a big yelp" when Krishna blew her the raspberry.
She then rang members of the medical team who performed the groundbreaking surgery to tell them the news.

Gang Held Over Human Body Fat Murders

10:31am UK, Friday November 20, 2009

Katie Cassidy, Sky News Online
Members of a gang arrested in Peru have confessed to killing people and extracting their body fat to sell to international cosmetic companies, police claim.

Three men were tracked down in the jungle of remote Huanuco province, where officials also found human remains and two bottles of fat.

Colonel Jorge Mejia, chief of Peru's anti-kidnapping police, told reporters the trio admitted to the murder of five people - and to draining the corpses.

The men revealed one litre of human fat could fetch $15,000 (more than £9,000), he added.

Describing the grisly method of fat extraction, Col Mejia said the gang would cut off victims' heads and limbs, take out the organs and then hang the torsos above candles to heat the flesh - letting the fat drip into tubs below.

It was then sold on to intermediaries in Peru's capital Lima, before heading to cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies in Europe.

However, Col Mejia conceded police could not confirm any fat had been sold.

Medical experts have cast doubt on the trade of human fat but said it was used in anti-wrinkle treatments.

The fat is normally always taken from a living patient, usually from the stomach or buttocks.

"I can't see why there would be a black market for fat," said Dr Adam Katz, a professor of plastic surgery at the University of Virginia medical school.

"It doesn't make any sense at all, because in most countries we can get fat so readily and in such amounts from people who are willing and ready to donate that I don't see why there would ever be a black market for fat."

Peruvian authorities said at least six men remained at large - including alleged gang leader, Hilario Cudena.

One of the men in custody reportedly told police Cudena has been killing people for their fat for more than 30 years.

Health officials say a Tamiflu-resistant strain of swine flu has spread between hospital patients.
Five patients on a unit treating people with severe underlying health conditions at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, were infected.
Three appear to have acquired the infection in hospital.
They are thought to be the first confirmed cases of person-to-person transmission of a Tamiflu-resistant strain in the world.
There have been several dozen reports around the world of people developing resistance to Tamiflu while taking the drug - but they have not passed on the strain to others.
Just one possible cases of person-to-person transmission of a resistant strain has been recorded - between two people at a US summer camp - and this has never been confirmed.
Two of the University Hospital Wales patients have recovered and have been discharged from hospital, one is in critical care and two are being treated on the ward.
The health officials stressed there was no risk to anyone else.
They said tests were being carried out to confirm exactly what happened.
The UK has bought enough doses of Tamiflu, which can shorten the duration of swine flu and reduce the risk of complications, for half the population.
Serious concern
So any spread of a Tamiflu-resistant strain of the illness is a serious public health concern.
The H1N1 virus has been remarkably stable since it emerged in April, but virologists had been half expecting new resistant strains to emerge.
Dr Roland Salmon, director of the National Public Health Service for Wale's Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre, said: "The emergence of influenza A viruses that are resistant to Tamiflu is not unexpected in patients with serious underlying conditions and suppressed immune systems, who still test positive for the virus despite treatment.
"In this case, the resistant strain of swine flu does not appear to be any more severe than the swine flu virus that has been circulating since April."
Dr Tony Jewell, Chief Medical Officer for Wales, said: "We know that people with suppressed immune systems are more susceptible to the swine flu virus, which is why they are a priority group under the first phase of the vaccination programme in Wales which is progressing at pace.
"We have stringent processes in place for monitoring for antiviral resistance in the UK so that we can spot resistance early and the causes can be investigated and the cases managed.
"Identifying these cases shows that our systems are working so patients should be reassured.
"Treatment with Tamiflu is still appropriate for swine flu and people should continue to take Tamiflu when they are prescribed it.
"It's also important that good hygiene practices are followed to further prevent the spread of the virus."
Professor Peter Openshaw, a respiratory physician at Imperial College London, said of the spread: "It's not surprising that this has happened, indeed it has always been anticipated".
Dr Ronald Cutler, deputy director of biomedical science at Queen Mary, University of London, said: "Shortening the time taken to produce new vaccines and improving the methods to control and treat the disease while vaccines are being made would be a way forward".
On Thursday it was announced that more than three million healthy children under five across the UK will be offered the swine flu jab.
Figures released on Thursday showed an estimated 53,000 new cases of swine flu in England in the last week, down from 64,000 in the week before.
In Scotland, the figure was 21,200, down from about 21,500 in the previous seven days.
The rate of flu-like illnesses diagnosed by GPs in Wales dropped to 36 cases for every 100,000 people from 65.8 the previous week.

Man who killed wife in sleep walks free

Posted 5 hours 52 minutes ago
A British man who strangled his wife in his sleep because he dreamt she was an intruder was freed, after prosecutors withdrew the case against him.
Brian Thomas, who suffers from a sleep disorder, admitted killing his wife Christine while they spent a night in camper van in west Wales in July last year, Swansea Crown court was told.
The 59-year-old, who has two grown-up daughters with his 57-year-old wife, had faced being sent to a psychiatric hospital as prosecutors sought a special verdict of not guilty due to insanity.
But prosecutors said they were no longer seeking that verdict, allowing him to walk free after being in custody since January.
"We are no longer seeking a special verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity," said prosecutor Paul Thomas.
"It is clear... that no useful purpose would be served by Mr Thomas being detained in a psychiatric hospital."
The court heard the couple had stopped for the night in a car park, but their sleep was disturbed by young men who gathered there with their cars, revving their engines and screeching their tyres.
So Mr Thomas decided to move the van to another car park. But at 3:49am the following morning, he called police to say he thought he had killed his wife.
He said he had been dreaming that he was fighting with the "boy racers" who had disturbed the couple earlier that night.
He thought he had put one of them in a headlock, but when he woke up he realised it was Christine.
Releasing him from custody, the judge told Mr Thomas that he bore no responsibility for what he had done, describing him as a "decent man and devoted husband".
His brother Raymond voiced relief.
"Family and friends are truly delighted by the outcome today. They were a loving couple and always like that together. He has always been a loving husband and a family man," he said.
"This was a tragic, tragic episode and we are all very emotional."
Cuba's government has offered its first free penis implants as part of a program set to be expanded across the communist island, an official newspaper reported.
It is likely not what Karl Marx had in mind when he imagined a society transformed "from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs", but Juventud Rebelde reported the silicon and silver penis implants are set to become more common.
Men in seven Cuban provinces will be eligible for the procedure, which urologist Juan Carlos Yip boasted was normally "exclusive to first-world countries and at a high cost".
"It will be carried out in patients whose sexual suffering does not respond positively to traditional treatments," he said.
Men over 40s and those with diabetes or circulation problems are set to be first in line, the paper reported.
http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2009/...54_468x320.jpg
The wanted man is shaven headed, of medium height - and might just betray an extremely pungent breath.
CCTV images show him sauntering calmly out of a petrol station with his stolen loot.
But the contents of his bag are very specific - he only ever steals Marmite.

The thief can be seen holding a carrier bag full of Marmite as he leaves the W. Grose Shell Garage in Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire
The raider has targeted a 24-hour petrol station four times in a month, each time clearing out its stock of the spread.
One day, when he left two jars behind, he came back for them the next night. In total, he stole 18 of the £2.79 jars over the month.
He has proven so persistent that station manager Jim Keary has stopped stocking the product.
Mr Keary, 54, who has run the W. Grose Shell Garage in Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, for 11 years, said: 'We have stopped selling Marmite now because of this.
'What's the point in selling something, if every time you stock it, it gets stolen?
'We can't work out why he was doing it. Maybe he's got a pregnant wife with really strong cravings. He knows what he wants - one night he took all but two jars then he came back for those the next night.
'Someone suggested that they might be hiding drugs in there. The Marmite would hide the smell.'
The thefts always occur at night, when the man could sneak in unnoticed by the two staff members on duty.
Mr Keary said their main problem was usually people driving off without paying for fuel, so he needed a different approach to clamp down on the mystery thief.
He added: 'At least we got some good CCTV footage. I've passed it on to the police now, so it's their job to catch him.'
'We keep a wall of pictures of people who have been caught stealing from the shop or in drive-offs from the CCTV.
'I do get a lot of laughs telling customers about the Marmite thief. I've certainly never heard of anything like it before.
'It is funny, but at the end of the day it affects other people. If people steal, then my bonus is affected.'
A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said: 'This crime is not something we would prioritise, but of course we would ask anyone who has information to call us on 03000 111 222.'
Transsexual linked to Italy's sex scandal 'found dead'

A Brazilian transsexual named in a sex scandal involving a former Italian politician is believed to have been killed in a fire in her Rome flat.

that didnt bother me so much, but i did want to find out what 'she' looked like, considering most people say that brazilian ladyboys are on par with Thai's. but i had a bit of a shock when i followed another link.

"Brenda" was friends with another Brazilian transsexual, known as Natalie, who was filmed allegedly having sex and taking drugs with Piero Marrazzo, the governor of Lazio province, which encompasses Rome and its surrounding region.

The film was secretly recorded and obtained by four police officers who are being investigated for allegedly trying to blackmail Mr Marrazzo.

The centre-Left politician initially denied any involvement in the scandal when it broke last month, but days later was forced to resign after admitting that he had been a client of the prostitutes and took cocaine with them.

no wonder he jacked his job in. it wouldnt be so bad if it resembled a woman and admited he couldnt tell the differnace, but this, this is shocking!!

human fat for cosmetics in Peru

*Four people have been arrested in Peru on suspicion of killing dozens of people in order to sell their fat and tissue for cosmetic uses in Europe. ...

Four people have been arrested in Peru on suspicion of killing dozens of people in order to sell their fat and tissue for cosmetic uses in Europe.

The gang allegedly targeted people on remote roads, luring them with fake job offers before killing them and extracting their fat.
The liquidised product fetched $15,000 (£9,000) a litre and police suspect it was sold on to companies in Europe.

At least five other suspects, including two Italian nationals, remain at large.
Police said the gang could be behind the disappearances of up to 60 people in Peru's Huanuco and Pasco regions.
One of those arrested told police the ringleader had been killing people for their fat for more than three decades.

The gang has been referred to as the Pishtacos, after an ancient Peruvian legend of killers who attack people on lonely roads and murder them for their fat.
Human tissue
At a news conference in the capital, police showed reporters two bottles containing human body fat and images of one of the alleged victims.

One of the alleged killings is reported to have taken place in mid-September, with the person's body tissue removed for sale.

Cmdr Angel Toledo told Reuters news agency some of the suspects had "declared and stated how they murdered people with the aim being to extract their fat in rudimentary labs and sell it".

Police said they suspect the fat was sold to cosmetics and pharmaceutical companies in Europe, but have not confirmed any such connection.

The group allegedly sold body fat to be used in cosmetics in Europe

Human fat is used in modern cosmetic procedures but in most cases it is the patient's own fat that is used and under strict legal guidelines.

Medical authorities have expressed scepticism about a black market for human fat, partly because of the wide availability of fat for use in surgical procedures.

'Detailed confession'

Gen Felix Burga, head of Peru's police criminal division, said there were indications that "an international network trafficking human fat" was operating from Peru.
The first person was arrested earlier this month in a bus station in Lima, carrying a shipment of the fat.

The Associated Press news agency quoted Col Jorge Mejia as saying one of the suspects had described to police in detail how the victims were killed and their fat removed.

The suspect said the fat was then sold to intermediaries in Lima and that the gang's leader, Hilario Cudena, had been carrying out such murders for decades, AP reported.

The alleged buyers of the fat are also being hunted by police.

Grim eh. £9,000 a litre!

The world champion's move was announced on Wednesday following news that former world champion Kimi Raikkonen will not race in F1 next year.
Button described leaving the Brawn team for whom he won the title as a "difficult decision".
But the 29-year-old added: "Life is about challenges. Most important of all, it's about challenging yourself."
In new team-mate Hamilton, Button will be competing against a man many regard as the fastest driver in F1.
And while the move leaves McLaren with one of the most exciting driver line-ups, Button is facing arguably the toughest challenge of his career.
He added: "Although I won the World Championship with Brawn GP last year, and I'll never forget that, I was always adamant that I wanted to continue to set myself fresh challenges.

Lewis is a wonderfully gifted driver who has earned the respect of every Formula 1 driver - I'm sure there's plenty that we can learn from each other
Jenson Button
"That's why I've decided to join Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. You can't help but be affected by this team's phenomenal history.
"McLaren is one of the greats of world sport, and its achievements and list of past champions read like a Who's Who of Formula 1 - Emerson Fittipaldi, James Hunt, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen and of course my new team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
"I've followed the McLaren team ever since I was a small boy, and it feels unbelievable to finally be a part of it.
"When I visited the McLaren Technology Centre earlier this month, it wasn't simply the technical resources and the incredible standards of excellence that impressed me.
"No, I was equally struck by the ambition, the motivation and the winning spirit that flow through everybody there. And then there's the team's epic history: put it this way, the trophy cabinets seem to stretch for miles.
"From a personal point of view, it's also a great pleasure to be joining a fellow British world champion.

"Lewis has achieved an incredible level of success in a very short period of time, and he's a wonderfully gifted driver who has earned the respect of every Formula 1 driver.
"I'm sure there's plenty that we can learn from each other, and I'm really looking forward to using our combined knowledge to push the team forward."
Button paid tribute to Brawn, whose participation in F1 last year was only confirmed with a month to go before the start of the season following Honda's decision to quit F1.
"I want to say that the 2009 season will always have a special place in my memory, and I'm absolutely sure that everybody at Brawn GP who worked so hard to achieve our world championship successes feels exactly the same way about it," he said.
Button's switch means McLaren will be fielding the last two world champions in the same team, with Hamilton having won the drivers' title in 2008.

"It has always been our policy to employ the two very best possible drivers," said McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh.
"In Jenson and Lewis, we feel we not only have the fastest pairing on the 2010 grid but also the two most complete, professional and dedicated drivers in Formula One.
"I want to make clear that Jenson's decision to join us was in no way motivated by money. We'll be paying him no more than he could be getting elsewhere."
Hamilton wished his former team-mate Heikki Kovalainen the best for the future, describing the Finn as "one of the nicest human beings I've ever met".
Hamilton added: "It's fantastic news that Jenson has decided to join McLaren - and I'm looking forward to working with him and our engineers to make sure we kick off the 2010 season with a car that's competitive enough to win the world championship
"I already know Jenson, and we get on very well together.
"We both really want our team to succeed. Although we'll be pushing each other hard, I'm sure we'll very quickly establish a great working relationship.
"He's an exceptional driver: very controlled and very smooth, and he has a real depth of knowledge and experience. I think we'll complement each other very well, and our collaboration will make the team stronger as a result. I believe we can pull together to make McLaren the best team on the grid."
Button's former team Brawn, who have been taken over by Mercedes, made Button an offer, but he did not consider it acceptable.
After a poor start to the 2009 season, McLaren came back strongly in the second half of the year, while Brawn, after dominating the first third of the season, slipped back in competitiveness as the year went on.

McLaren will be the first team to start a season with the last two world champions as their drivers.
And it will be the first pairing of two British world champions since Graham Hill joined Jim Clark at Lotus in 1968.
Brawn emerged from the ashes of the former Honda team, after the Japanese company pulled out of F1 last winter.
Button took a pay cut last winter to help secure the team's future and they went on to win the world championship together in Brawn's debut season.
Now renamed Mercedes Grand Prix, the team have already signed the German Nico Rosberg as one of their drivers.
His fellow German Nick Heidfeld is the favourite for the second seat.
The officer had been called to the girl's home in Ozark, Arkansas, by her mother because she was behaving in an unruly manner and refusing to take a shower.
In a report on the incident the officer, Dustin Bradshaw, said the mother gave him permission to use the Taser.
When he arrived, the girl was curled up on the floor, screaming, and resisting as her mother tried to get her in the shower before bed.
"Her mother told me to take her if I needed to," the officer wrote.
The child was "violently kicking and verbally combative" when he tried to take her into custody and she kicked him in the groin.
He then delivered "a very brief drive stun to her back," the report said.
The girl's father, Anthony Medlock, who is divorced from her mother, said the girl showed signs of emotional problems but did not deserve to be "treated like an animal".
He said: "Ten years old and they shot electricity through her body, and I want to know how the heck in God's green earth can they get away with this.
"If you can't pick the kid up and take her to your car, handcuff her, then I don't think you need to be an officer. She doesn't deserve to be treated like a dog. She's not a tiger." Local Mayor Vernon McDaniel said the FBI should investigate.
He said: "People here feel like that he made a mistake in using a Taser, and maybe he did, but we will not know until we get an impartial investigation." The local Police Chief Jim Noggle said no disciplinary action was taken against Bradshaw.
"We didn't use the Taser to punish the child, just to bring the child under control so she wouldn't hurt herself or somebody else," he said.
He said if the officer tried to forcefully put the girl in handcuffs, he could have accidentally broken her arm or leg.
Mr Noggle said the girl will face disorderly conduct charges as a juvenileview-source:Taser gun used on 10-year-old girl who 'refused to take shower' - Telegraph
