TeakDoor.com - The Thailand Forum - Motoring in Thailand and Asia

Cars and motorbikes in Thailand and Asia, Where to buy and sell your truck? Where to get fixed and what garage to use. Should I buy a suzuki carry? Will it have a car DVD? Will my travel insurance cover me for driving in Thailand? Or should I just buy a Mercedes or a Honda CRV? Everything to do with motoring and vehicles goes in this section. Do I really need a driving licence in Thailand to drive to Bangkok car hire?

My Vigo has just passed 90k and the original Duellers were down to about 10% use left so while I was in CM I put some new shoes on her -Michelin Cross Terrain- for the trip home plus I saved 800B on the price I got my local guy down to. Pretty happy with them and they look like they will be better in the wet. Of course the first thing I did was stop at a pump and check the pressuers - 38psi- Specs say 35 max....i've got them at 32 as when I let them down to 29 (as I used to have my duellers happy there and thatnwas the rating on the sticker in the door jamb) the steering felt too heavy. Probably with all that fresh meat gripping the road.

Was wondering about shocks. Go the standard again or aftermarket? I must say at 90k it still rides like new so I am happy with the originals, not one rattle but up for an improvement. Not too happy with the brakes either. It's a big car and I would like to maybe improve them as well without spending a fortune.

We will be moving to CM from Petchabun, it's 450k's and will be doing that run a lot in the near future with the back loaded up so looking for road orientated equipment. It's a 2005 4 door 4x4 ECT.

Hey, does anyone know what the deal is with a dirt bike with no papers? I'll be taking it up to Chiang Mai, can the coppers confiscate it? It was brought into thailand hidden in the back of a van from Sing. It's no problem here but I'm worried what could happen and is there anything I can do about it? Is there tax to pay on off road bikes?

Any experience on riding in Chiang Mai? I'm hoping there will be loads of trail riding to do. Not interested in moto x.

Now my present sex machine is pretty sexy, it's red as all sex machines should be, and it has a spoiler which is essential to get those women juices going, but this is the sexiest car i ever owned, an M reg MGB GT with full sunroof, damn the girls were gagging for it, cost a small fortune, drove like shit and its only redeeming features was the full sunroof for the 2 weeks of UK summer and that it was red, oh, it also had a overdrive switch, no idea what that was for on such an underpowered engine, but at least it was red, the car not the switch although that may have had a red light.

So, my Fortuner had a bit of a slip-sliding affair in a rubber plantation last week . . . it was a tiered plantation so there was much fun as the hulk sashayed elegantly down the slope to come to rest against . . . rubber trees.

So, the big thing is out of commission for a while.

Mrs Hat's car is still waiting to have all the little extras fitted and done to it and won't be here until mid-December now.

Her car dealer has completely run out of stock and demo cars so he gave us his daughter's car:

A 2004 Perodua Kelisa!

1000cc of pure unadulterated fun . . . the zippiest little thing I've ever driven . . . it reminds me of my first car, a 1275LS Mini.

Just goes to show how comfortable we have become in our big and technologically refined cars . . . the driving fun simply isn't there.

I am going to buy one of these things to zip around in.

Am I breaking the law by driving it now? Because I keep being told different things and it's only a matter of time before the B.I.B try to wet their beaks when they see me driving with no plates....

I'm planning to buy a new Honda, but I think 125cc is not going to be big enough for traveling around Thailand. Is a FI Honda really that much better and if I'm going up in the hills a carbuerated engine just doesn't have the HP. I'm in Chiang Mai and I don't see any used 250's for sale of any make.
I rode a 250cc Suzuki or was it a Yamaha two-stroke from San Francisco to Denver,
pretty crazy. When it got above 10,000' there was no power at all. I got down to 5mph at one point and I thought I was going to have to push it over the top of Loveland Pass.

This being an AMG baby, the real explosion happens when you press the starter button. What an awesome sound that front-mounted V8 engine makes; distinct from anything Italian by virtue of a deep, metallic rumble that drums up into a thousand jackhammers thumping the ground as the revs rise. It sounds very mechanical, very precise and very expensive This is a serious car with serious performance: 563bhp, 479lb ft of torque, 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds and a limited top speed of 197mph. The acceleration is effortless: in any of the seven gears, at any speed, you get bucketloads of oomph. It's almost too seamless – you reach illegal speeds with no sense of occasion: you just arrive there.
In "controlled efficiency" mode, it's an easy cruise everywhere, with even some lag between gearchanges from the dual-clutch transmission to make drivers feel they're in a "normal car".
Switch to the "sport" or "sport plus" setting, however, and the gearchange times shorten, the engine growls and it's no longer a pretty gullwing but a serious sports car with its DTM-inspired carbon-fibre driveshaft, and lightweight all-aluminium chassis and body.

Hi,

Thetyim badgered me a while ago to post some details of my V8 engine swap, also I have several other projects on the go, so if there is any interest I'll try to keep a form of project diary on this thread.

The car that I recently finished is an 03 Hilux Prerunner D4D Auto, the engine is a 1UZ-FE (from Lexus LS400 /Toyota Celsior).

I'm also just starting a BMW E30 coupe that is getting a V8 manual, and a 1JZ-GE into Volvo 940.

I'd like to post up some pics but it says attachments not allowed.........>

Cheers
