I will need to build a small 'shed' in a month or three and I was going to do it myself as and when funds allow. I think using blocks would be the simplest solution with the preformed concrete floor panels for the ceiling.

How much are these blocks?

What brands are generally used?

What's the Thai name?

In what sizes do the concrete floor panels come in and how much are they?

I think that covers it for now...

Any ideas what is the best way to unblock kitchen drains?
I need like a high pressure water or Chemical solution!

I have a kitchen in two inches of putrid water, with this black stinking filth pouring out of the floor drains (When a hose is applied-I was trying to flush it...all I did was flood it even more.)

I have red raw fet and hands after applying 5KG of Soda Fie - caustic soda that back washed, and soaked my jeans, and got inside my useless rubber gloves.

Takes me back to my scholldays as a twat, when we did chemistry, and you had to write down the reactions of chemicals during an experiment

"Soda Fie was applied, effervescence took place, a severe burning sensation was noted in all four extremeties, noxious gases were formed, and a very quick run out of the kitchen to a hosepiping down were required.

The experiment, as was the case in my schooldays, was NOT a sucess!

There appears to be some real hard core white shit, that is almost as hard as ceramic, i believe it is congealed FAT, it is fucking disgusting.

I have given up tonight due to the burns and the nausea, but if anyone knows of anything that can really go through this shit, it will be greatly appreciated.

can someone recommend a clear coating which can be used on tiles that become slippery when wet?

ideally it would be something without a lot of 'grit' in it, but if that's impossible get here, so be it.

thanks.

Hi All,

I am toying around with ideas for constructing my weekend getaway "farmhouse".

One or two bedrooms, one bath, a great room, and a large covered deck. I want it to be raised on concrete posts. For the construction, I was thinking of using the corrugated metal siding that you see on a lot of warehouses in Thailand. This would be screwed to steel framing. The walls would be insulated with fiberglass and sheet rocked on the inside. I want to use old teak doors and shutters for the windows (no glass). The roof would be either those asbestos looking tiles or metal. I'm trying for sort of an agricultural / rustic look.

I want to keep the cost as low as possible. How do you think this type of construction would compare (cost and cooling wise) to the traditional brick and cement construction?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Following on from Ciaphas' great effort, ta-da, here is the beginnings of our very own Little House on the Prairie..oops Rice Paddy. Wood is mostly from father-in-law's 30-40 year old Mai Daeng trees, cut 12-18 months ago and left to season under the pig-shed roof. A few bits of wood to be purchased here and there including some floorboards cos the father-in-law underestimated and didn't cut enough. Land raised up 2 metres 2 years ago and settled through 2 rainy seasons.

We have no electricity and no running water, although plenty laying around in the paddies. This is a real country-style build, with a toothless foreman and a bunch of village guys being ordered around by my partner, who has visions of the house being the same quality as a 5-star hotel villa....

When we started 2 years ago we budgeted 400,000 baht but will probably be closer to 600,000 once I add in all the bits I forgot before (the wood milling, transport for the traditional roof tiles etc). Building expected to take 2-3 months depending on the weather and my finances!

Stupidly we didn't install a water tank when building, so now I have moved 2 cement water jars to provide our own water when 'Naam ma lay' which is often.

What type of pump is required to suck water out of these jars and provide good pressure to all outlets in both houses ?

The jars are located immediately behind the house on a ground level concrete base?
