The Korat Immigration office is now a full-service office able to do extensions of stay as well as all the usual junk. The office has been transformed with lots of partitions and lots more staff, including two officials who were formerly in Surin.
I went in today to do a 90 report and to get a re-entry permit. (Oddly, the Surin office was unable to do a re-entry permit when we visited a couple of months ago,)
Anyway, everything went smoothly. I love the way they handle customers on an ad-hoc basis rather than using a line or take-a-number system. It's all very efficient.
While we were doing our business we were seated next to a couple: young Thai woman and older Scandinavian man. He looked awful: red eyes, four day beard, yellowish skin, crummy shirt, wrinkled shorts, rubber slippers. They were obviously having difficulty with something.
After a bit the official in charge of this section came over and asked the Thai woman how many beers her husband drinks each day! She answered "half a dozen", but I think she must have meant half a case. The guy looked like he had half a dozen before breakfast each day.
Anyway, I thought it curious that the immigration official spotted that the guy had a drinking problem and actually asked how many beers the guy has.
Of course, Ms. B answered truthfully that I only have two or three per evening.
