Working legally?

I have recently been offered freelance teaching work by an organisation. I will not be an official member of staff just somebody who teaches when and is needed by them. They will pay me hourly and money will go straight into my bank account.
Is a work permit still required for this in order for me to be working legally?

PS THe organisation is also telling me that my non-imm 'O' visa is sufficient and theres no need for a wp

If you ask whether it is legal - I must say it is definitely not, if you should get caught you'd be in dire straights and will pay a min of Baht 15,000 and face the consequences that may be even canceling your Non-O visa.

Now if you ask me how big the chance is to get caught, that is another thing, depends on location etc. and you may be probably never discovered working illegally.

So you have the risk versus profit - make up your mind - legal it is certainly not - chances to get caught may be small - I don't know. It rests with you, if you want to stay clean - ask them for a WP, just my 2 baht of the day!

Good luck to whatever your decision is!

They're lying, a work permit is required for any work done by a foreigner in Thailand, paid or not, part-time or full-time. You may get away with it, many do, but I'd be wary of any organization that lies to you like that. It is extremely unlikely but the possibility exists that you may be jailed and/or deported for working without a work permit.

Absolutely correct - they know that they are lying, and that IMO leaves you in a very vulnerable position, if you have a problem with somebody he or she can call the next Labour Dept. and you're in shit.

If you want to work a non contract job it's not going to come with a WP.

I reckon upto 50% of whities doing some sort of teaching here (in BKK) don't have a WP. Nothing will happen to you.

^The OP asked whether a work permit is legally required or not, the answer is yes, a work permit is legally required. Whether or not he'll get away with working without a permit is not the question so why are you trying to muddy the waters with talk about whether or not he can get away with it? That's not what the OP asked.

Fair enough.

Working without a WP is illegal here.

Like prostitution is.

Next time you see a prostitute, inform the police.

Illegality means nothing here unless the authorites can either get money from you, or you've pissed them off.

Don't have to, they already know and already extract their blood money, as well as other things. Don't see any reason why misinformation should possibly put the OP in the same position of being fcuked by the authorities against his will.

No, but he seems to be basing a decision on what is and isn't illegal here.

Yes, it's illegal. So is driving a bike without a helmet. So is prostitution and corruption.

I suspect Thailand's work permit rules are why there is so much prostitution here; a foreigner is not even allowed to jack it without a work permit, he must hire a Thai to do it for him.

Indeed.

Have a car in your wife's name?
Washing it is illegal without a WP.

Have a property in your wife's name?
Washing the windows, changing a light bulb, making the bed are all illegal without a WP.

The way in which you argue your point is simply awe-inspiring. But then again, you are clueless about Thailand so not much more than retarded dribble is expected from you.

And if I may ask, why post a red from someone who you previously redded and called a dickhead? Seems greatly immature.
