You seem like you have been in Thailand for awhile now? Then why not give the OP a straight answer to his question. Is it illegal to do this without a WP? YES! You seem to be one of the guys who likes to walk the tight rope and think you will never be caught in the wrong. Well just so you know, everyone that is in Jail (Majority) knew what they were doing was wrong and never thought they would get caught because they took advise from people like you along the way or they just took chances to many times, or just had bad luck the first time! Try and be responsible and an adult sometimes and do what's right when the time comes. Hope this post doesn't hurt you feelings but put yourself in the OP's shoes, if you were new to Thailand or had been here for awhile and had an honest to goodness question and asked on a Farang forum would you not want the best and most honest answer to your query? I don't care what you say, YOU WOULD. Why set another foreigner up for problems. You maybe could have said the following if you could not just say YES to the OP's question: Yes it's illegal, but many do it anyway and get away with it. Your a grown man and have to make your own decisions but I would not as I would think about what would happen to me if I DID GET CAUGHT. Thanks for your time Chairman Mao. KHUNDAN

-driving a bike without a helmet for a farang = look the other way -So is prostitution and corruption, for a Thai = same same -So is prostitution and corruption, for a farang = beer money for BIB or look the other way to bolster tourism. -working without a permit for farang = bend over and spread your cheeks without lube and sand included..not tourist anymore doesn't count... pay beer money and still get screwed as your taking the job one of their family might be able to have, true or not, that's how they interpret it.. ![]()

Yes it's illegal. Teaching a few hours here and there without a WP WILL NOT get you in any trouble. If you can show any link of any kind of any of the thousands of part-time teachers working without a WP every single day getting into legal trouble for doing so, then please do so. But you can't. Can you? Because, oh would you look at that, Chairman Mao was right, it doesn't happen.

| ^can you show a link about the thousands of part-time teachers working without permits, Mao? I'd love to know how you came up with a figure of thousands, I'd hate to think you just plucked a figure like that (I mean thousands is quite a lot when you take into account the number of registered work-permit holders here) out of thin air. I'm sure you can back up the figure of "thousands". Shouldn't take you long as you seem to have all the stats at your fingertips. You do have a permit yourself don't you? I wouldn't like to think you need to believe that nobody ever gets busted on WP violations just because you're working illegally.

And btw. WPs allow you to work in a designated company. If a teacher is required to go on a field trip, the WP doesn't allow you to work outside of the school, it's illegal. If you visit a students exhibition/competition, the WP doesn't allow you to work outside of the school, it's illegal. The Thai culture course they want everybody to attend/pay for, well, that's study, you need a student visa to legally attend, if you have a WP, you cannot possibly legally attend it. All the Business English Agencies, they require teachers to do in-house classes at the business location, no WP can cover that, completely illegal. Have you bought a vehical in a partner's name Bob? If so, I hope you have a WP for driving it when she's with you. If you don't live in a property in your own name, I hope you you have a WP for chaging a light bulb, sweeping the floor, cooking for others. All illegal bob. | geeezussss!! I've been wiping my own ass all this time and I had no idea it was illegal?? BTW Mao I'm not taking a shot I know you're technically right regarding the lunacy of the working laws in Thailand nor do I believe that anyone else is disputing that, only the fact that the OP was asking if it was legal or not and giving him an accurate answer... |

| I think the phrase Dr.BOb used was "extremely unlikely," although I noticed he didn't post a link supporting that opinion. Oh, wait, it is Mao you are referring to. Sorry. They disagree pretty vehemently, it seems. |

Sorry, just wondering if you are as much of a clueless "newbie" as some of our frogs-in-the-well around here seem to think. Provided the newbie isn't really dumb, I see both Bob's and Mao's replies as being potentially helpful and not all that much in conflict, despite the pissing contest.
