| Tabien Baan, what the purpose My wife got her own tabian baan when we finished building our house. This morning she suggested she was going to put her four grown half-brothers on her tabian baan (to make things easier for them to vote, cheaper taxes etc etc) I was adamant against it. Seriously adamant against it. Am I overreacting? As far as I understand, a tabian baan lists the residences of a domicile. They're all grown adults and should get their own. What do you think? |

| But it's not your girlfriend's. It belongs to the owner of the house. It states who lives there. They don't live here. For fuck's sake, they should grow up and be men for once in their lives. Always snaking around looking to be clever. I don't like it. Something doesn't sit well with me. I said "no" after a lengthy discussion. In the end she'll do what she wants, it's her tabian baan -- but I've stated my position. |

| What if my wife kicks it someday and they can prove they've lived there for X years and have cleaned and worked and toiled and bled for the upkeep and .... I just don't like it. |

| As stated, you don't have to live there to be on a tambien baan. Until my wife put herself on the tambien baan for our condo she was on her mother's upcountry one and she hasn't lived there in 20 years. Over half the population of Bangkok is on an upcountry tambien baan. I don't see anything really wrong with your wife’s desire to put her half-brothers on hers. Do you see it has accepting some sort of responsibility for their actions? I can only think that by being on tambien baan of someone that is going to be there a long time, it would keep them from having get it changed everytime they move from one rented hovel to another. | On a walkabout | I don't think you have anything to worry about Tex! The Tabian Barn is just an official means to know where everyone is living at any given time. The only real problem I foresee (and that is) if your brother-in-laws are into shady business you could have people arriving on your front door step trying to find them. That would be my only concern and when considering my useless, worthless, lazy as fuck brother-in-laws! |

| The main reason I'm reluctant to agree to it is because I don't know the legal ramifications of the owner of a house and those listed on the paper. What if one of them has a car accident and kills a dozen children in a pickup? Do I experience any exposure from lawyers looking for compensation because the twat lives in my house -- legally? Dunno. I'm positive my wife hasn't thought through any of this either. One of them has a wife and kid and another is getting married in April -- wonder if the whole village is invited? ... it's an evil, snowball. |

They are defiately a legal document, and every once in a while my missus has to produce her house papers, which means a trip back home to get them (up country). I do know we are not on our landladys papers (was mentioned some times), and from what I can gather landowners don't normally (YMMV) put tenants on the house papers. But as said, being on them defines you legal residence, and I agree with your caution. | |

| It practically gives them the right to stay at the house. You'd have no grounds to ask them to leave or evict them. If it ever came to this. That's why you should make sure your name is also on the Tabien Ban. |

| ^^^ "Practically" - it only matters if things go tits up, of course. But you might be well adviced to disappear voluntarily if that happens anyway. But my advice to get your name on it stands, how often do we hear of a farang being charged with tresspassing when collecting his own house during or after marital crisis? |
