    Thai construction

This is how Thais overcome a pole that is in the way when installing flood drains. Why not move the pole to the recess ?

Probably for the same reason they don't bother to raise the height of manhole covers when they resurface a roads and pavements.

Hazz, they don't have pavements in my village and all storm drain lids/covers are alongside the roads. But, believe it or not, they did take into consideration the camber of the road.

My observation of Thai construction (and I'm in ural Issan.) is that once upon a time someone figured out a way to do things and that idea has been handed down from generation to generation.

Personally, I am very happy that there are no building codes; and I truely enjoy the creative process. Well, I hope to continue to enjoy the process, provided things don't fall down or tip over.

I recently made this little video - http://youtu.be/NTYp3Sg6VH4

Looks like a power pole, would moving it cause problem with the wires not having a straight pull to the next pole, might need some additional reinforcement if they moved it.

Nah, the moving of the pole 30-40cm sideways ain't going to add much, if any, tension to the line. It was something I looked at. There's enough slack in the wires to allow for the move. I saw it as no more than an attempt to avoid paying the electricity company to cut and reconnect the supply.
As for reinforcing the pole base. They haven't had to do it anywhere else in the village.
