I'd make a mess out of fiberglass or concrete. The flexible liner is very forgiving of clumsiness.

don't buy in the states...they buy from manufacturers here in Thailand...

I used to export it to Oz & NZ from here...

I figured the stuff in the US was imported from here. Odd that it's hard to find a retail source in LOS though.

Didn't pan out. Still can't find anything but the thin black plastic that I'm sure won't last long.

So crazy that EPDM, the preferred liner for ponds, is manufactured in Thailand, but seemingly not sold anywhere.

Damn frustrating.

This is the stuff I want:

I guess I should have bought when I was in the US....

So, after months of searching and more e-mails and phone calls than I'd like to recall, I was ready to give up on finding pond liner.

Today, Ms. AC and I went up to the big nursery center at Khok Kruat, about 10 K west of Korat on the road to Bangkok. They have a couple of big lined ponds there and we hoped to find someone who knew where the liner was purchased.

Turns out, they sell it right there....

Boy do I feel dumb.

There are two kinds for sale:

PVC and HDPE (High Density Polyethylene). The PVC comes in rolls that are 1.8 meters wide. This is not wide enough for me so I'd have to glue it. The HDPE comes in 3.6 meter width; plenty for me.

Based on what research I've been able to do, both are strong, resist tearing and have good UV resistance.

I'm leaning toward using the HDPE to avoid having to glue a seam.

Any thoughts?

I design liner systems for landfills and have worked with both materials. They each have their pluses and minus. PVC is not UV resistant, so if the liner material will be exposed, this will be a bad choice (pool liners degrade after 10 or 15 years...will likely be worse with the sunlight in thailand). If you are going to cover the liener with soils or rocks....it should be fine. Its advantages are that it is much more flexible than the HDPE, and the fact that you can solvent weld it. HDPE is much more UV resistant (it is usually black from the addition of carbon black which provides the UV resistancy), but it is not very flexible (if you have an uneaven subbase, ir trying to fit around round corners, etc), and can only be heat bonded....typically beyond a DIY installation!

So...if it was me and the liner was being covered, I would use PVC.

I am looking for the same product now. Do you have the contact info of the supplier out of Korat? I am looking at going with the PVC. Did they also have a variety of colors to choose from? I was also thinking of using a sand color for decking...

I've never seen 8 foot 7 centimetres in Thailand. I've seen 100 feet centimetres but I always avoid them in case they bite. Most Thais seems scared of them. They might even scare the fish in a pond.
