    Cheap Thai House Build

This is quite a nice house being built, the whole lot is being made out of second hand stuff, obviously with the wood being old it is rock hard making it hard for the Thai builders, but it shouldn't have any problems with termites etc.

It is 2 buildings next to each other but not connected, not sure why they didn't connect them, but one building is the living area, this one.

The other building is the bedrooms.

Nice wooden stairs leading up to the house.

Big covered outside area all wooden flooring.

The outside cladding is some fiber board or something, ie not real wood, so will probably last for ever.

^Although it looks like skirting to me.

Inside it is nice and cool, shame the bathroom is so small, also the walls and cieling are all painted in that highly reflective brown

4x4 inches or more, don't forget this aint new wood, this stuff is harder than concrete
Although it may not be a good idea to fill the room up with nice old antique teak furniture, maybe a tad too heavy.

The Mrs has got a stack of timber and has been going on about building something for ages and this actually catches my eye. Hmm, interesting, where would I get plans for such a build????

I am a, UK trained, apprenticed, time served carpenter, and I love all the woodwork that is carried out in Thailand. I love all the guys that do the work. I had six Thai carprnters in Abu-Dhabi, working for me, that were, in my opinion, the best in the world. They really did me proud. I have all the time in the world for them, and I would be proud to have them on any job that was down to me.

What I mean't to say was, that, as a wooden built structure, the Thais know exactly what they are doing.

Cooler than concrete & brick houses as they don't act like storage heaters.

I've built out of old wood and had to keep a drill next to the hammer.

From personal experience for a simple wooden house like these you don't really need plans, if you find a good team of builders draw on a bit of paper what you want and they should be able to handle it.

Where are you in Thailand? I can recommend the team that built my house. It's best to look around locally and find a house you like the look of and ask the owners who built it and what they think of the builders. When we built our house we had two groups of people come of the street to ask about it, take some pictures and get the number of the building team.

Nice to see someone dispel that myth regarding the comparative wooden structures.

Yep, some guys I know have salvaged lumber from old barns or houses and the (nails) either bent or split the wood making the joints weak. Pre-drilling sure helps.

Four by four corner posts, with two by four studs between them are just fine, especially if there are some 45 degree braces reinforcing the corners for lateral stability.

Nice looking house and wood is a great -and natural- building material well suited to the Thai climate.

I can agree with that, and also a couple of replacement bits

I just built a table and the nails looked like pretzels and just would not drive through the wood without the pilot holes. And went through three drill bits. But at the end of the day the table is rock solid
