    A telephone wire...

Well ,we all need phones don't we? Here is the Thai way of installing the main phone lines leading to the house.

One does have to be aware of what is going on.

i have been wrestling with the problem of getting a phone line into chez Dougal.

    I have filled out forms:

    "You give me map"

    "Map of what?"

    "Map you live"

"ARe you tellimg me that the national phone company does not have its own map?"

"OK here is a map" - hand drawn.

"What is this?" pointing to a symbol on my map.

    "It's a wat"

    "Yes, what is it?"

    "A wat"

    "But what it is?"

"Hang on. Do you mean what is it or what wat is it?"

    "Oh! it's a wat"

"Yes thats what I thought I said".

And so the long day draws to a close, a few more wrinkles and grey hairs but still no telephone connection.
    Lord, deliver us from e-mail.

WE've been buying stuff all over for the new hovel. most offices and major stores have forms just for the map to be drawn. The other day we had the telephone, the furniture adn the hot water heater installer show up all on schedule!
Appointments were made for 11:00. Everyone was in and out by 12:30. Everything works/fits. I didn't check the ADSL yet, though; tomorrow.

The cable they are installing is not a cable for a single telephone line, its too thick. They are upgrading or extending the reach of the current infrastructure.
The cable that runs to your house will be much thinner than the one being held by the guy smiling with the cap on above.

It now seems that despit ebeing technically able to install a telephone line and ADSL, in practice they can't because there are no spare numbers available.

    The choices are:

Put my name on the list and hope I don't die before a line becomes available.

Buy a line from an existing subscriber.

Persuade someone to leave their liine to me in their will - and then kill them.

As the village here is going to be a small town in the next year option 1 doesn't look too clever, I doubt if I could get away with option 3 so getting someone drunk and buying their phone off them seems the best solution.

In the meantime I am surfing courtesy of AIS wireless connectivity. The setting up of which was a doddle thanks to AIS helpdesk man speaking excellent Engrish and actually knowing what he was doing.

Install seven phones in your house and then cancel them.

Are there electricity poles already in place ?

If there are, then you can just pay for the wire.
From memory it's 350 baht for 100 metres.

I work for a U.S. communications company. I just showed the photos to my colleague, the Manager for Technical Training, who works with the Safety and Field Services groups.

Thanks so much -- it was the best laugh he's had in weeks!

Health & Safety dont exist in Thailand.
I remember watching a thai man,up a metal ladder, welding a bracket back into place, while `live` electric cables lay around him, during a violent storm with lots of lightning......! Good Old Buddha.......

Yea we got electric, we asked about paying for the phone line before, I'm sure it was a lot more than that. It was a while ago though and I think the line was something like 6K away then

    My "Telephone Line"

I went to the TOT office in Chantaburi to get a phone line installed at the new home, 25 Klics outside Chantaburi town. The Rep asks my why I need a phone, I answer "to access the inet".

    "You have hand phone?"

    "Yes."

"What number?" I give him the number.

"OK, ten days, will install." "Pay at the counter over there."

    "2500 Baht?"

    "Yes, includes installation."

Eight days later I have my "phone line", its a rather high-tech phone line as it requires Skype also...

Never mind, I wanted to try a IPstar dish anyway.

(Seems I don't have enough posts to put in a pix )
