I want to make a fake stone wall like this.



I showed this to our contractor and he has come back to us with a price of 3,780bt per square meter for just the materials, which seems overly pricey to me.

I thought we were just gonna order a truck load of cheap bricks and have the guys make it but it turns out that it comes in pre-made sheets.

3,780 baht per sq. meter sounds WAY pricey- the only way it could be justified would be if it's made from some exotic material (which it doesn't appear to be).

They sell that stuff in HomePro- have you gotten a price from there?

I'll stand correction on this....but from memory I think the polished granite imported from India is about that price...4500 baht sq mtr....

it goes with the territory...you have to price and shop for everything here...
otherwise they will cheat you...the quote you have looks high....

there is even a market for empty plastic paint buckets...the priemum brands...
the empties are refilled with inferior paint and passed off by building contractors as the quality products....

Yeah that sounds about right. We got some Black African granite for the floor that was 4,500bt/sqm.

Not yet, I'll check it out but I can see them being even more pang.

Seems pricy to me. If I remember rightly; you are supposed to to use a rather expensive perpose made grout for tilling swimming pools. But I cannot imagine it costs that much. Maybe you need a particually rare type of tier with cross eyes and serious perception glasses to get wavy lines of tiles rather than the straight ones

But seriously Baby Makers hint about always buying the materials yourself; is very very good advice and one I have never failed to follow

Yes, I just bought some at 200 baht a square metre. Not too bad considering the price but I'm having to do it myself as when you get them home you see there are a lot of spoilt ones or ones too way off colour. O.K. for a huge area but not small.

I spent a couple of hours weeding out the dud ones yesterday then laying them flat on the floor in order to make sure that when they go up they don't look too bad. Nonethless I reckon I've got about 25% wastage.

Best to check out all the local suppliers until you find something you like FP.
Pretty easy to put up yourself though so no need to get someone in for it unless you don't have much free time.

In Bangyai at a specialist shop right at the end Of Rattanatibet road opposite the Bank of Ayuddhaya. Normally 300 a metre but on offer. They came in two lengths, 20 cm or 25 ( er....or thereabouts ) 5cm wide. You can see in the picture that I bought some of each so that I could stagger them without to much cutting.
Even bought a cheap grinder for 390 at Big C to do any cutting required. They go up easily enough with glue.

The reason I'm doing it myself is that as I said, I had to unwrap them all ( they come in bundles of 5 ) and sort out the duds . A builder won't be too bothered. He'll just stick them up as they come. As I'm only doing a small area ( about 1.5 square metres ) as a backdrop to our water feature I can afford to be picky and slow. If you're doing a big area they have other types ( nicer ) about 40 cm by 20 at around 35 baht each but you have to order 10 days in advance for delivery.

Your best bet is to shop around locally first at Home Pro etc to see what available. You should be able to find the same as the above for not more than the regular 300 a square metre.

Not sure about the delivery thing. I guess if you have a big order they will probably do it but you might need to spend a few thousand baht first.

A word of warning. If you are heading north on the outer ring road , a lot of the underpasses are flooded. This is forcing people to use only the elevated U turns which are few and far between so there are some long queues and traffic jams. Using Rajapreuk Road might be quicker.

Secondly, whatever you do, don't overshoot the Rattanathibet / Ring Road junction as you get to Bangyai as beyond that point there is always a big traffic jam as the road is constricted because of the BTS railway construction work and the next U turn is a fair way up.

I should also say that another place that has a really beautiful selection of antique effect brick tiles is Grand Home Mart on the Rattanathibet/Ngam wong warn road. To get there, cross the river on Rattanathibet road ( using the old bridge which connects to the frontage road, then once you have crossed the river and driven about 1 - 2 k Grand Home Mart is on the left immediatly before the Bangkok Bank.
Really lovely stuff in here but could be in the 1 - 2000 baht a metre range but at least the tiles are bigger and will go up quicker.

I did break a couple when I parked my truck on them, but in general, no problems

I went to my local brickyard to see what she had; there was a small pile of them to one side so I asked about them. She sent her men off to demolish some more walls of an old cigarette factoryto get me enough

So the quote I got from the original contractor was 3,780 baht per/s.m for the bricks plus 1,000 baht per/s.m to prepare the wall and install it. He rounded it down to 4,500 baht per/s.m.

Bugger off mate.

My new contractor has quoted 500bt per square meter to prepare and install the bricks and I go and buy my own bricks. Still an expensive build but this guy come recommended and we're in a bit of a rush now.

So I went out brick shopping. I started off at Homepro on Rama 2 and I was then heading over to Grand home Mart but there was some flooding so I jumped on the expressway and went to Boonthavorn on Ratchadaphitsek.

Here's what I found, first off Homepro.

Or this one, about the same price when you factor in using two sizes of bricks and using 2 different colours. We are looking at the second and fourth brick from the top.


2,667bt They look a bit garish in the photo but I actually really liked them. We decided in the end that it probably wouldn't go with our color scheme.


2,500bt These were my favorites but we've already got a black granite floor so it would be too dark. These were really black (they look a bit grey in the photo) and have a nice randomness to the brick sizes.


2,500bt these are still in contention.



I'll post some before and after shots of the wall when it's completed.

Edit: Forgot to mention that Homepro want 30 days for delivery and Boonthavorn can deliver in 4 days.

If you are intending using them on the outside of the house get the contractor to seal them this will help prevent dirt as well as seepage through the stone. I just had a quote for welsh type slate to be cut and butted on the outside of my terrace area including all materials /fitting and sealing for 36 sq mtrs 10 days work 30,000 baht
