    Stained glass

I've got three windows within which a bit of stained glass would look good.

    Anyone know of a source?

We have a shop in Phrae which does something similar.
I didn't look too closely so don't know the details.
They is no lead used the glass looked as though is was melted to form a pattern/image

Bangkok plenty, rest of Thailand none, think it is all made in Ban Phe, pretty sure thats the name, heading from Pattaya to Bangkok on Sukhumvit, about 10km before Bangkok bare to the left, follow the road for about 1km and around to the right, the manufacturer is there.

Unless you actually see craftsmen on the premises making leaded windows, it is likely imported from China. I have 25 years pro experience in Canada, I'm looking at the feasablity of importing coloured sheet glass from China. I have not been able to find a supplier here for glass, lead came or copper foil tape. Singapore or Hong Kong is another possibility. The materials are expensive, even from China, prohibitive from USA. I've seen custom doors with leaded glass insert around Chiang Mai, definitely from China. Most of my photo library is not digitized, but i have a few pics of my work. PM me if you're interested to see.

The DIY shops here do a lead strip to stick on glass, make your own designs then fill in with translucent paints of many colours. looks like the real thing.

Chattuchak Market. In the lanes nearest JJ mall there are several artisans who do stained/leaded glass.

This is the real thing, and you won't find work like this in Thailand, unless I can get some supplies! More pics just uploaded in the galleries.

Reminds me of my hippie days. I even had a stained glass peace symbol. Good thing peoples taste improves with age.

The arts are mostly made up of critics, myself included. There are people who don't like Rembrandt, Picasso, Van Gogh, Dali, Warhol et al. So there's no accounting for taste. Fortunately I have the skill to create from any design idea to suit any clients requirements. It's a common misconception that stained glass is 'painted'. Not so, all coloured glass is made in its particular colour according to raw ingredients. The only part of the attached work that is painted is the detail of the tiger. Everything else is individually cut pieces of coloured glass. Much of the detail in faces, robes etc. in religious windows is painted, but on coloured glass.

Steevee, i dont wish to be unkind but can you draw ? do you understand the chemistry of coloured glass ?
You could dig yourself a deep hole here.

Steevee, is there really much of a market for this anymore? It had it's heyday back in the seventies and now people seem to have moved into a more modern space. Do people still want this kind of fussy design?

I am not sure why you mention well established artists when the subject was those panels, but yes, there is no accounting for taste

I don't have any pretension as an 'artist'. I can draw as well as most but not as well as many. I went to art college 1973-75 and worked as a professional glass artist until 1999. I was into glass blowing for a number of years and had an extensive knowledge of glass chemistry at one time, although I've forgotten a lot of it. I know what colour you get from chromium, selenium, gold, iron, cobalt, etc.
My last commission was done in 2001 and have been out of stained glass since then. Sure, tastes change, not so long ago Tiffany lamps were discarded and Tiffany windows were smashed out. Now they are the most prized creations in glass. My personal interest always leaned toward Art Nouveau and work of L.C. Tiffany and John Lafarge rather than the European modernism post war style. I'm not a fine artist by any stretch. I don't paint although I have enough competence for painting on glass and have restored numerous church windows. Through the 1980s-90s a residential commission was usually in the interest of the lady of the house and she wanted birds, butterflies and flowers. If you want to stay in the business you do what the customer wants. It's a rare client that gives you freedom of expression.
A simple search will show anyone how much crap stained glass is out there. The truly creative and finely crafted work is a very small percentage. And I don't think you'll find it in Thailand. I'd love to put up more pictures, but I need a scanner for lots of photos. And being as much as 30 years old, some of that work would also look dated to some. An artisan will grow and mature, and unfortunately I, in some ways had to, stopped. I'm looking to get back into it again and as I said, I can create with anyone's ideas. It's not that hard if you know what you're doing.
Sorry, I don't mean to write an essay but I sensed a challenge. Questions?

BTW, I included this in the gallery. I don't have anything else I can post at this time. This is all hand painted detail and kiln fired. Glass paints are not coloured, they are used to provide sharp detail outlines and shading.

That's an understatement! Good luck, you obviously posess a lot of skill and craftsmanship.

Most of our clients ask us to incorporporate feng shui elements into our work for them. Personally I think its a lot of bollocks but you may find a niche if you work with some feng shui imagery or Thai mythical imagery.

If you are an artisan rather than an artist, then that would definitely apply.

So if someone gives you a design, not too complicated, how much would you charge per sq. m.? if you can find the glass!

nope, it is not hard, but the design part is critical

good luck with your new venture, I think you may be in demand

I consider myself an artisan with some artistic ability. Stained glass never got much acceptance as an 'art form' being somewhat mechanical and constructive in nature. I'm actively searching out a supply of glass, it looks like China. I brought all my tools with me. Cost? probably about 25-30% of similar cost in N. America. There's some textured commercial glass available in colourless and basic amber, blue, green. Not especially interesting but it can be effective if used creatively. I'd need accurate dimensions of the opening and a template if it is not rectangular.
The plan is to start off with some small scale work at a few shows/galleries to gauge the interest. I plan to get my gf involved. I am part time between Chiang Mai and her place east of Phayao.

    Steevee,

You see the window to the left with the wooden grill thing in it.

I've got 3 like that and we think stained glass panels would be good.

What kind of costs would be involved?

It looks well shaded, are you thinking of colourless glass for maximum light? Do you intend removal of the existing window frames? Size looks a little bigger than 2'x3', roughly 6s.f+. I have a couple of leads to follow up for commercial grade glass here but price is unknown. I have a potential source for lead came or copper foil tape out of Singapore. Prices at this time are also unknown. The best I could do at this point is guestimate...$10-15 per s.f., complexity of design is a factor, but don't hold me to it. If you can get a design idea to me via email to gives a better idea of what you're thinking. I'd recommend lead came for nice crisp lines, it can be made completely weatherproof. Where are you located? There might be some shipping/transportation to consider. Also, I hope you're not in a hurry lol. Let's follow up via email locortelan[at]yahoo.ca.
