    GF Builds house in Korat!

My GF of new is having a house built in Korat, I am in Kiwi land and will only meet up with her in October.
So it is a bit of a long distance affair at the moment. I have been doing some design work for her but the build is to far advanced to make any major changes on the budget that she has at the moment, yes I know its always “to do this will cost you this much” every where you go.
She gave me a floor plan and I redrew it in AutoCAD, she wanted to change the kitchen but that would cost!!! Eh.
This is the photo of the house taken the week of the 14th of July to give you an idea of how far the build is.

This is the floor plan as contracted.

This is how the GF wants the kitchen, by the way she says it will be MY kitchen as I am retired and will do all the cooking as she still has to work!!! (I think I must be retarded too???)

This is the kitchen & floor plan how I would do it, but this will mean knocking down one wall after the house is built.

OK all you learned ones in the LoS, how hard would it be to renovate “knock down” the wall and build the decent sized kitchen after the house is built? I know this sound a waste but I think with the circumstances this is our only option to date.
Also she the GF has never seen, been in a western style house where the kitchen is part of the “Open Plan Living”, she does not want the house to smell of all the spicy Thai food!!
I told her that with a good extractor fan this would not be a problem, but she does not believe me!!!!
I know there are a few of you in the Korat area and any ideas would be appreciated.

I agree with your GF, the smell of Thai cooking can over power the strongest of extractor fans.

Not to pick but more likely 14th of June

Not hard but easier if you do it now before all is finished. Appears you have plenty of cross ventilation in the kitchen. This coupled with a good extractor will keep the kitchen pretty much smell free.

For the really gross stinky stuff, offer to build a simple outdoor cooking area with only a one or two burner gas hob. Cheap and an easy add on to the enclosed kitchen.

Can you fit a small outside Thai kitchen at the back of the laundry but still under the roof? It doesn't need much and is pretty cheap. Unless you are going to fit some serious industrial exhaust in there when they start frying up the tasty stuff it will probably overwhelm your extraction system and permeate the house.

The other thing to maybe think about is that quite often when frying up stuff in a wok you will get flames when wet vegetables etc hit the oil, the flames will burn the filters in the typical western style extractor.

I put a commercial extractor fan over the cook top and still built a Thai kitchen outside for the all powerful one. They cook with oil, chili and garlic (thats the good smell) and even outside the smell can be penetrating. The remodel you propose is doable, of course, but remodels while living in a place are a real pain, dust, noise, security, people throughout the house, suggestions from neighbors/family etc. Rebuild as you suggest will cost at least double vs doing what you want on initial build. You may want to consider adding your kitchen on the back under a awning type roof, with partial enclosure. Just something to think about.

Small tiled concrete pad with roof overhang and one of these.

^^ Yup, one of those, plus a sink if there is space and they'll be sound.

Can do the prep inside and the stinky/eye-watering/asphyxiating/toxic gases stuff outside.

Nothing new to add, but, having just built a house here in the Philippines a year ago, three points to emphasize: (1) If building costs are X amount, changing costs after you have built will be at least X x 2. (2) Make an outside 'dirty kitchen'. It's cheap and takes up little room and you will find it is used as much or more than the traditional inside kitchen. (3) Even big extractor fans won't do it for fish frying or the like. Good luck!

The way house is at the moment now (albeit late) is the ideal time to make changes. Once the house is done and then changes made, many problems arise plus the expenses; ie., tiles, electricity, etc.

Been down that road before. Just my 2 bahts worth. Good Luck!

Agreed. Considering you are shelling out the cash for the house I'd reason you could build the kitchen in the shit house if you wanted.

Jeez mate, roll over on an issue like this and you'll be considered a soft touch, the next thing you know she'll be sending you down the road with piss all whilst Somchai is shagging her in your bed.

If she wants an outside kitchen tell her to pay for the alterations.

    Good luck with it all.

    Cheers

    His and Hers

Thanks Guys for your helpful suggestions, always better once you have “been there done that”
Any way The GF was right & I was w r o n g, so a compromise has been made.
It’s a his and hers, kitchens any way Like some of you suggested fire the stinky stuff outside and the do the rest of the prep inside, Notice the placement of the fridge, not so far to walk for a beer when watching telly!!
Terry I am not paying for this house, (not yet anyway) so SHE can do!!

    Here is the compromise:

Here are some photos taken previously by the GF, this one was around the middle of May.

    This was 15th of June

    This was 20th of June

Just a little of the progress so far, I will update when the GF sends more pic’s.

I know I am stealing my own thread, but this is My Idea of a real Blokes house.
You will note that the "Garage" is 2 times the floor area of the house, this is what I want to build!!
