    Lightweight Kitchen Extension

I've just bought a new house - the usual, characterless modern box. However, the kitchen (being Thai style) is way too small, and the plan has the washing machine outside.

I'd like to have built a small room outside the kitchen door to cover the washing machine, to house the fridge (which is now in the sitting room) and provide a bit of storage for a few pots and pans.

It seems to me overkill to build using the usual concrete blocks (but what do I know about construction? Nothing!) Plus, the neighbors took that route (they moved in a few months ago), and now the extension is pulling away from the main building, and there are enormous cracks.

Does anyone have any suggestions about an alternative, lightweight construction technique that might be suitable and is available in Thailand?

    Thanks.

The next door neighbours just had a lightweight steel frame erected with that aluminium roofing on it. Cost 8k to to the back, side and front of their house.

I prefer bamboo & straw roof, but it's not as practical.
