Thread: How To Build A Road

There is currently a dirt road a half kilometer long to the property. It is mainly used by farm implements and gets muddy and rutted to where it can be impassable without 4WD and is slightly hilly. The PYB says in about 4 years the road will be paved but I would rather not wait for that and he has given me the ok to improve it anyway I wish. So I would like to improve this road so that vehicles can ride through cleanly but not spend more than necessary. Are there any suggestions on the options out there to achieve this / price?

we had the same problem in our feed road

so we got a few truckloads of coarse gravel dumped and smoothed onto it

before it was a mud fest, now it is passable in all weathers

each truckload was B500 and it needed a few!

That is the solution in the old US drop some gravel on it. hehe

The gravel suggestions are spot on but it is worth the little extra to hire a grader and a vibrating roller for a day to finish it off (if there are any handy)

the traffic flattened the gravel; after it rained, it was a good thing to put some of the gravel at the edges into the tyre tracks, make it more substantial

Equally important to the gravel is the drainage of the road...You need the road to be peaked a little in the center so that the water will run off and not stand...Standing water caused to potholes and will drive the gravel into the mud over a period of time...

A dozer beats a farm tractor for leveling and spreading.

You want to layer large stone ( hoggin') first then getting smaller. The stone breaks down quickly so the bigger stuff lasts much longer. Start as big as you dare, minimum of 1" across.
