Good contractor in Chiang Mai

I am planing to built a house in Mae Taeng. Anyone here can recommend a good contractor/builder in Chiang Mai? Of corse pricing and quality are equally important. Do you made any experiences with Jasminehomes (Steve Malone) in Chiang Mai?

Best to wait for DrAndy to comment, he seems to be having loads of houses built all over Chiang Mai and seems extremely happy with his builders that he is using.

I have about 12 rai of land and plan to built a house with two floors, a kind a private resort with 10 rooms on 900 sm (all in). I am in contact with Jasminehomes in Chiang Mai, the owner is Steve Malone, a english man. Do you know the company?

I am sure he is an Ok builder, but most of those run by expats tend to quite pricey. I haven't heard of his company though

It is worth getting a quote from them, but also try a couple of other Thai building companies

If you want a good one, who has been working for us on the concrete house in the city, let me know. You will need to speak Thai though, as his English is poor

Make sure his name is not Mitch Malone, you can do a search on google, maybe include the word Pattaya in the search.

I would be wary of any farang company, especially with that name!!

make sure you can talk to previous clients and see what they have built

Hi there, Whilst i dont know Steve malone, i do know the company i used them to find land all over chiangmai(though i never brought through them as the cost was cheaper to go to the seller privately).

They are a very good comapany with energetic staff who im sure will help you in your plans.

They are incredibly pricey for their estate agents finders fee sometimes 200,000 badt on top(maybe 10-15%). I would say that if you want western standards maintained in your house building then you can use this company and they will deliver and end product of good quality but it will be costly!

I havent had a house made by them nor would I, but that is because I would prefer all Thai builders at a reasonable cost.

Saying that im sure per sqm i can build it cheaper in the UK????? i saw a brick building about 3 storeys where they were building at 66 pounds per sqm, which brings the question why arent there more brick buildings made( that is all brick no concrete framing)?

Are you willing to put the time and effort into teaching the Thai planning department about load bearing walls and bricks and proving to them that it is actually possible and done in most countries all round the world?

Remember most of the bricks produced here are too soft to be good for load bearing walls...unless you build them nice and thick like CMs city walls!

they also tend to weather and crumble fairly fast. I think they need to be fired at a higher temperature

I showed a pic of my brick house in London to my Thai architect and he was amazed, he had no idea that it was possible to use bricks like that

In Chonburi the red bricks are sun baked, in Issarn and places with rice paddies they are oven baked but using rice husks to fuel the fire, they don't get any where near the temperatures used to fire bricks in the UK and Europe.

Try Graeme from Kensington. Really nice lad and been in the game for about 20 years. Built loads of homes in Chiang Mai. Very popular with expats and people building retirement homes. One of the lowest in price but best in quality. Just do a search for "Thailand builders" or "Chiang Mai builders" and their web site comes up. Won awards and everything. He built my mates house beautifully. I was very impressed and I am a builder too from the UK. But I don't build here. Retired now. This guy knows his cookies for sure. Worth speaking with him.

^Isn't he based in Bangkok? Long way to travel everyday to oversee a job.
