| Do any of you think a Multi-Split Aircon system is a good or bad idea? That is when you let one outside compressor serve two or more in-door fan-units. For myself I think it should have several advantages but I have no experiance of my own. I am in the process of renovating a house and I want air-con in every room. The house and the rooms are not so big but there are 5 rooms to be cooled (I calculate 6 indoor units) and for one thing it would be nice to reduce the number of compressors outside. Should it also not be cheaper and more dureable? |

| My last school in the NT had a multi system. 4 fan units per classroom from 1 compressor. Worked well. If one fan went out you still had 3 left to cool. It also meant that there was a greater diffusion of cold air in the room. I appreciate that this isn't what you are planning, but there you go.

| Had a multi split in office. As you say has advantages. Overall cost was less than single room compressors. Downside is efficiency in rooms long distances from compressor degraded due to length of piping. Also, if the compressor fails, the entire house is without A/C. You might consider two compressors with 3 rooms on each to reduce these downsides.

| We use many individual units, usually 1 in each bedroom, two at opposing ends of living area, this works out cheaper, easy to service and built in redundancy means you are never without a working unit. To avoid cluttered look we layout a central elevated compressor bank with covered security (compressor thieves).
