waterproofing

We are just to complete 2 bungalows. Have using a lot of the brick tiles on columns. They have a rough surface so dirt can stick to them easy. I was plane to use some kind of impregnation preservative to make it waterproof and easy to clean. But the builder say that it will look glossy and not so nice. Not sure that this is thru, or my be he dont want to pay for it!

If you want a matt finish use gloss finish varnish first to seal it then matt varnish, he wont want to pay for it as good quality stuff is expensive, ie 1,000baht per gallon and up, low quality stuff will last a few weeks in this sunny climate.

Thanks. I guess I need a lot, as the bricks are porous.
