Thread: Your Thailand Toilet

The thread on how your toilet in Thailand will be fitted, this is not the thread of how it is done in America or the UK, this thread will not include the fitting of Thai squat toilets as there is noway in the world that a farang should have to go through such a humiliating experience as trying to squat and have a poo at the same time and then use his hand to wipe his bum, this is for humans with a bit of self respect who use a proper porcelain throne for their ablutions.

This is the base of a toilet, that little hole which is about 2 and 1/2 inches diameter is where all the crap comes out from the toilet, you see those 2 slots to the side of the outlet? these are supposed to be where the screws go to attach your toilet firmly to the floor, there will not be screws and the slots or holes whatever will just be filled with white cement, yes cement is strong enough to hold your toilet in place, cement is really strong and they use it to build houses all over the world.

The inside of a toilet water tank, this is the modern version with a slide type float as opposed to a ball cock, that long gold arm is attached to the flush lever and a piece of nylon string goes down to the red flapper where the water when released passes through that into the toilet bowl, the toilet bowl obviously empties due to gravity, at least you hope it does.

The bit sticking up that is attached to the red flapper and the small black water inlet tube is the overflow pipe, if the water reaches over that it will flow into the toilet bowl, good place to check if you hear your toilet continually filling up.

Either side of the flapper is a nut and bolt with rubber washers, this is what fits the tank to the toilet, underneath the flapper between the tank and toilet is a great big rubber washer that stops the water going all over the place and makes it go into the toilet bowl.

A more modern version, these are a lot better and less problematic than the old style ball cock ones but cost around 500baht, when you reckon a complete farang toilet starts at around 2,000baht that is quite an expensive upgrade.



The Thai squat toilet that needs to be removed and donated to a French family.
This is inset to the floor so once removed a new 4 inch pipe has to be added and some concrete to make the floor, the pipe needs a drop of around 3cms per meter length, there is actually exact figures but offhand I can't remember what they are but 3cms or more is more than enough, although the more slope the better.



The waste pipe for the new toilet, concrete floor put in and then tiled and grouted all the way up to the waste pipe.

Normally the pipe needs to be 40cms away from the wall, that way your cistern is a couple of cms away from the wall when the toilet is installed, this one was a weird one though and centered out to 35cms, so worth checking before you put in your pipes and tile it all.



And the new farang throne fitted and in place but without the tank fitted to it yet, to bed the base down onto the ceramic tiles you need to use around 3 to 4 kilos of white cement.

You need either 2 1/2 inch water feeds for this or one with a "T" piece, ie your bum gun and toilet tank feed, probably best to stick a valve on there aswell for the extra 100baht plus.
