    Your Thailand Toilet

The thread on how your toilet in Thailand will be fitted, this is not the thread of how it is done in America or the UK, this thread will not include the fitting of Thai squat toilets as there is noway in the world that a farang should have to go through such a humiliating experience as trying to squat and have a poo at the same time and then use his hand to wipe his bum, this is for humans with a bit of self respect who use a proper porcelain throne for their ablutions.

This is the base of a toilet, that little hole which is about 2 and 1/2 inches diameter is where all the crap comes out from the toilet, you see those 2 slots to the side of the outlet? these are supposed to be where the screws go to attach your toilet firmly to the floor, there will not be screws and the slots or holes whatever will just be filled with white cement, yes cement is strong enough to hold your toilet in place, cement is really strong and they use it to build houses all over the world.

Bet you never thought you could get 3 kilos of Sunday roast dinner through such a small hole in a matter of seconds

The inside of a toilet water tank, this is the modern version with a slide type float as opposed to a ball cock, that long gold arm is attached to the flush lever and a piece of nylon string goes down to the red flapper where the water when released passes through that into the toilet bowl, the toilet bowl obviously empties due to gravity, at least you hope it does.

The bit sticking up that is attached to the red flapper and the small black water inlet tube is the overflow pipe, if the water reaches over that it will flow into the toilet bowl, good place to check if you hear your toilet continually filling up.

Either side of the flapper is a nut and bolt with rubber washers, this is what fits the tank to the toilet, underneath the flapper between the tank and toilet is a great big rubber washer that stops the water going all over the place and makes it go into the toilet bowl.

Standard set up plan for a normal old style ball cock toilet cistern.

A more modern version, these are a lot better and less problematic than the old style ball cock ones but cost around 500baht, when you reckon a complete farang toilet starts at around 2,000baht that is quite an expensive upgrade.

The Thai squat toilet that needs to be removed and donated to a French family.
This is inset to the floor so once removed a new 4 inch pipe has to be added and some concrete to make the floor, the pipe needs a drop of around 3cms per meter length, there is actually exact figures but offhand I can't remember what they are but 3cms or more is more than enough, although the more slope the better.

The waste pipe for the new toilet, concrete floor put in and then tiled and grouted all the way up to the waste pipe.

Normally the pipe needs to be 40cms away from the wall, that way your cistern is a couple of cms away from the wall when the toilet is installed, this one was a weird one though and centered out to 35cms, so worth checking before you put in your pipes and tile it all.

And the new farang throne fitted and in place but without the tank fitted to it yet, to bed the base down onto the ceramic tiles you need to use around 3 to 4 kilos of white cement.

You need either 2 1/2 inch water feeds for this or one with a "T" piece, ie your bum gun and toilet tank feed, probably best to stick a valve on there aswell for the extra 100baht plus.

Nice job you have done to explain how to and for sure you know what you are talking about. The result is a toilet that most people know how to use. I do however take exception to your comments about Thai toilets and in fact have put in a seperate outside Thai toilet for guests. Most of the Thai people in rural farming country are totally confused by the modern contraption you have installed and find it much more comfortagle using the one you and me detest.

Even though we only know how to use the version you have installed most rural Thai people are equally committed to the squat and prefer it that way. So we consider having both types essential to accomodate the needs of our family and guests.

I'm going to stick my neck on the line here ( or my greens ) and say, squat toilets are for heathens and anyone who wipes their ass with their hand wants severe re-education in all things related to health and cleanliness.

Can anyone truthfully say they have been to a clean squat toilet in Thailand, not stinking of piss and not having a horrible bucket of water next to it with a platic bowl or pan with God knows what diseases in there.

Shit at your peril, gentlemen...Not for me thank you...

You might want to mention that when thai's install western toilets they aren't bolted to the floor, just cemented , and generally not sealed around the drain.

There is also a hand hygenic tube available which fits over the exit pipe of the loo. This then sits in the floor hole. I used this on my toilet which i have just completed. The old toilet although sealed, had shit spread everywhere around the base of the bog. Wasn't very pleasent removing 20 plus years of shyte.

The hygene pipe isn't cheap though. 700Bht.

Or a couple of hundred baht to a Thai labourer, difficult choice.

On grout, for some reason grout doesn't bond very well, I assume its in the chemical properties the difference between grout and white cement, but grout shouldn't be used instead of white cement to fit your toilet, also you can use white cement to put up your wall tiles but not grout, grout in the UK comes in 2 standards, water resistant and waterproof, using water resistant in your bathroom will give you a fine selection of green algae growths on your grout, so if you don't like the green slime effect in your bathroom use the water proof grout for your tiles.

I made no comment about the cleanliness of the Thai squat toilets and for sure many are very dirty, but they don't have to be and that is the way we keep ours.

I did have a friend from Wales who was very agitated about and refused to use the dip pans that he found in the Thai toilets with comments that people wipe their butts with the same hands that they use to grasp the pans, and he was not going to take a chance with catching something using them.

He also had another quirk and that is he refused to use a seat belt complaing that they were not comfortable. He did not die from using a pan in the toilet but rather from the impact of hitting his head on the windshield when his pickup accidentally left the road.

I guess you do take your chances in many different ways but some are definately more dangerous than others.
