Road building Costs

Have seen some excellent advice on road construction methods ie reinforcing etc,but can any one give me a rough idea of current costing ,I realises concrete and steel are going up and down faster than a go go girls knickers, but a rough costing for a 5 metre wide concrete road would help me decide how long the road should be, at present its looking around 100 metres and I need to have some sort of budget for this

There are Soooooooooooooooooooooo many variables/factors to consider when you decide to build this road,…………First is the Right-a-way owned by you/family/Thai Wife (do you have the right to build this road on the property?), Clearing (how many tress/brush/vegetation need to be cleared away, cubic yard figure?), removing substandard soil (any muck/organic soil where you intend to build this road), embankment [fill needed, how many cubic yards,.figure the height of the embankment so you can figure at least a 2:1 slope from the top of road (both sides) in calculating your volume of material needed], Subgrade and Base Rock you intend on using [between the embankment and the finish surface (usually about 2 feet of material) of the road] you should use some type of base rock and then the Road surface,………..concrete or Asphalt (and how thick)?

Any utilities in the way? Underground electric/water/sewer/telephone lines?

Will you be cutting off any natural water flows in the future, with this road?

You should think about safety issues also,……if your embankment is higher than two feet from natural ground you might want to figure a flatter slope,……….using a 4:1 slope and not a 2:1 slope,…….as/if you get higher you might want to use even a flatter slope,.6:1,……cost will be higher but you could save a life (no one flipping over if they left the roadway).

I don’t know what the prices are here in Thailand (and where do you intend to build the road?,….prices might vary depending on location),………..but you should think about all of the above before asking the question. Someone here might be able to help you after you figure the above info needed.

I recently paved 4 x 10 m of road outside my house, 10 cm thick.
Materiel cost 12.000 Baht, could have been 1500 Baht lower if I had not chosen 12mm metal for reinforcing.
Labour cost was 100 Baht per square meter, ie 4000 Baht.

Calculate 350-400 Baht per square meter for your road.

Edit:
Sand and gravel is a bit more expensive here than in rural Thailand, and so is the cement.
You may be able to do yours for 300 Baht per square meter..

lom, was the concrete delieverd in a concrete truck or mixed on site? What is the price of cubic meter of concrete delievered? If mixed on site was that included in the labor costs? What is the price per ton for reo steel?

Thanks S landreth for that comprehensive reply --lots to think about ,a particular one being the start where the road leaves the public road and has to rise about 3 metres to get onto our land

You gave me some more information,………….you are coming off an existing road.

Please remember what I wrote about blocking any natural water movement when building this road (or drainage ditches). Since you will be coming off of an existing road you might have to consider putting in a small culvert (maybe large) to let the water move along the existing roadway.
A lot of roads have drainage ditches along side of them to drain water away from the roadway. You might have to place a culvert in (at the beginning of your road, from the existing roadway) your new road to satisfy government officials. It would be costly to have to come back and set a line of culvert/concrete pipe in after the job has been completed.

The concrete was mixed on site and was around 4 cubic metres (4x10x0.1).

Prices as far as I remember:

30 pcs 12mm reo 10m long ~ 6000 Baht
20 bags cement ~ 3500 baht
2 cubic meter gravel and 3 cubic meter sand (we didn't use all of it) ~ 2500 Baht

The labour cost was for cleaning and flattening the road before paving, reo work, concrete mixing and pouring.
5 guys + 1 foreman , 2 days work. (And those 5 guys did seldom pause)
