    Advice on tieling

Tried to post in the building section but i can't?

I'm pretty adept with most things like plumbing and electrics, but i've only ever tiled a floor before.

    1. I'm re-tileing and wanted to know if it is best to start with the floor or the walls first.

    2. When tileing a wall to i start from the centre outwards?

Also, i don't really want to use cement, and would prefer to use tile adhesive but i haven't seen this available anywhere.

One more thing. As i will be removing old tiles, can i use adhesive direct onto the cemented floor that was used for the old tiles, or should i remove the adhesive cement first.

    Cheers

Wall first, use a cement based adhesive if the wall is reasonably straight, comes in 20 kilo bags, names like crocodile and that, just add water and stir, floor use sand and cement, if the old stuff is well stuck down just leave it there.

Tileing the wall think about before you start, work out where your cutting will be and how they will look when the bathroom is finished, your shower area floor may have say a 5cm slope over the area, if you use 25cm tiles on the wall you don't want to end up with bitty bits of tiles on the first lowest row, to make it look good maybe you want to end up with the bottom row being 19cms to 24 cms high, think about your sink and counter height, mark it all out and get stuck into it.

Yeah, I think DD has the nail on the head ^^^

The secret is PLANNING!!! Think of the bits that wil catch the eye first and plan your tiling around these.

Anyone remember the phenomonen of 'chicken' tiles (mainly UK I think), these were a wall tile with a 'random' flecked pattern. All the tiles were the same and with a little imagination (and some evil person pointing it out) the image of a chick was visible. Of course walking into the pub loo after a few you see all these chicks marching across the wall, there was always one upside down to annoy and any attempt (by installers that knew) to actually put them randomly looked plain wrong

Random picture tiles are normally done in a knights move in chess, 1 across 2 down or 2 across 1 down, looks shite though I reckon.
