    Get a roof extractor fan!

Just had one fitted at a cost of just 2200bht. Best money I have spent since I got here!

The house is quite a lot cooler. Haven't had to use the Aircon today......

    Highly recomended to you blokes.

There is a thread in here about them LD, I can't see how they work here, you need wind at quite a high pressure to drive the external fan and in Thailand there is not normally that much breeze.
Venting the house will help but all you need for that a big pipe, the fan bit looks good but won't do much without breeze to drive it. No matter how much it extracts its never going to be lower than the external ambient temp.

Sorry "No have" but look at the roofs as you move around and you will seel quite a few of them. They are big bulbous silver revolving things, and they actally DO work....I do not have to use the Aircon all the time now as I used to do, and rooms that were like ovens when closed and unoccupied for a while stay much cooler than before.

I suppose they may not be effective if your house is in a place protected from the wind. But mine is not. So IT WORKS!

So, it's what's called a "turbine fan". I was wondering if it was one of those or an electric extractor fan.

Only 2200 baht? Where did you buy?

    I want one, today!

There are numerous places to buy them, I have them, but as PP said, they do not move much air but do help as the air under your roof and above your ceiling is up to 160-180 degrees, just like your car setting in the sun with the windows rolled up, I did see down in town the other day "attic vent fans" which are a fan connected to a flat plate that is screened and you cut a hole in your wall just below the peak of the roof in the end of the house and turn this fan on and it lowers the super heated air above the ceiling down from what it is in the car setting in the sun to the ambient temp, if you think that an unvented attic is ambient temp, just stick your head and shoulders up thru your ceiling and see just how fucking hot it is up there.

I've had these roof cavity convection driven extractor fans before - they became popular as a DIY in Australia about 10 years ago.
Anything that extracts hot air from the ceiling / stops heat radiating downwards is going to provide some improvment.
The smaller ones 15 -20cm directly flued from the internal ceiling to outside the house (that could be closed in winter) were the best option.
PROBLEMS ARE - if you do not get the fitting right on the roof tiles or cladding you will get leaks in heavy rain and when they get older the bearings tend to squeek !!
Depends on the pitch of your roof and how much you like climbing ladders but you can do it yourself without too many problems.

Yes, it does work to a certain degree as the super heated air will rise and go out the turbo vent but it does nothing to suck in ambient temp air under the roof and above the ceiling, that takes the attic vent fan.

Is this a roof extractor? This shot shows what my neighbor recently did that lives directly behind me here in BKK.

I want to say it was more than B2200. Will have to ask again.

^That looks like a powered extractor fan which together with ventilated eves would keep the under roof area cooler, but to give numbers to it without any quantifying evidence, is just an unsupported advertising.

This is what I am wanting to get. This view taken from in the attic looking down shows an attic fan.

The idea is that during the evening one turns this puppy on and the cooler air is sucked through the house and out to the attic which contains vents.

This system worked when I was a kid.

    Today, I don't know...

When my sister first got married (late 70's) she and her husband lived in a small, non-air-conditioned home in the very hot San Fernando valley. They got one of these high powered attic ventilation fans. The first time I went there they turned it on for a demo and thought my eardrums were going to be sucked out of my head. That puppy had power. It seemed to work, but they eventually got air con....

If you had a fan in the place where hillys pic three steps to a cooler house, put an attic fan where #3 is and have eve vents in so the fan can suck air into the attic and vent it out all day and the aircons running it will keep it a lot cooler with less runtime of the units.
Be damn sure the cheapest and less trouble and no way of water leakage and they do have the attic fans in thailand because I have seen them at shops but never on a building.

The man makes them in his shop on the Sukhamvit Rd opposite
BIG C South Pattaya. He comes along and fits them too.
I usually have the Aircon on for most of the time but since installing this Fan I have only switched it on for a few minutes three or four times.
I am well pleased....call 0815725726 he speaks reasonably good English.
Yeah here they are! No electricity. Just wind powered....

The most effective way to keep yr house cool is having god ceiling insulation, Think about it, a man is in Antarctica at -30 deg C, his body is at 39,7deg c with only 35 mm of good insulation covering 90 percent of his body he keeps warm. Thats near to 70 deg of temperature differential.
There is only one way for heat to travel down to the living area, by radiation so if you install a good thermal barrier, little or no heat transfer.
Between the under roof and house we are talking about maybe 30 deg differential.
A solid thermal barrier in the ceiling of 75 mm will keep the house cool.

This pic is a bit worrying as the fitting instructions were specific in that the unit must be vertical to allow the unit to rotate correctly and to prevent wear/noise from the bearing .

^^ Not possible, If there is sufficient thermal gas pressure it will rotate a fan but only as fast as energy available from the gas flow, it cannot go any faster. In other words it only responds to the positive pressure, it cannot create negative pressure (or suction) without an external energy source.

True they are a bit ugly but you won't see them from the front of your house if you place them on the back slope. of the roof.
    Incidentally, they are silent running.
I still have the usual electric fan going in the lounge, but hardly ever have to switch on the aircon now......and when I do it's at the very hottest part of the day for just a short while. Before I had it on a lot!

when you are building your house what is the point of leaving a roof space, it just gets filled with junk.
I put some windows in the roof, get some air circulating and you don't need fans.
    this is my kitchen ceiling.
