Thread: looking for tools

In the states I can shop for all kinds of tools at places like Home Depot or Lowe's. Major hardware department stores similar to those seem absent in Thailand...or have I just missed them?

Does anyone know of places like this?

The point of all this is my need to purchase a Dremel rotary tool (or something similar). however, it would also be nice to know of major hardware store(s) for the future.

Try Tool Pro Plus.

Good luck finding a Dremel, there will be loads of crappy Chinese rotary tools for about the same price though.

A search on google for 'Tool Pro Plus thailand bangkok' didn't work out too well

I see you are in BKK - In Phuket here is a good tool store called - surprisingly - "Phuket Tools" , and they stock or can get just about any imported tools you ask for !

I'm not sure if Tool Pro Plus is a national chain store.
Home Pro might have them too. Just don't let any of the sharks latch on to you. They're worthless and they never let go.

There's always near Sampeng as well, but I don't like to travel that far into BKK if I don't have to (I'm in the Ramkhamhaeng area).

The thread on True Value is nice, but they don't have any stores in BKK. Maybe on the next trip to Pattaya

I had a bunch of small stainless steel parts cut by a laser. There is a little extra metal where the beam first started and finished cutting. I have a carbide bit for filing it off, but I need a dremel style tool to spin it. I don't want to use a hand power drill, as it's awkward to use for such a small part. So the dremel tool seems appropriate.

True Value is now having a sale, the dremel tool I got last wk I paid 1300bht which is down from I think about 4500bht.
The dremel type tool they sell will only work on 110 volts, so you will need a stepdown transformer.
I have seen another make of rotary tool here in thailand that sells for about 2200bht and it runs on 220 volts.

The 220 volt Thai available one -to be blunt - is crap .
Binned mine last year but cant remember the name - sorry -bought it to build into a combo knife and fishhook sharpening machine I built and it burnt out after a month of occasional use .
Got a Dremel from UK and after 3 years is as good as new .

Whoops. Don't know how I missed the True Value in BKK. I downloaded the map. I may visit tomorrow. How long the sale is on the dremel tool?

True value Nontaburi is not in Bangkok, but it is still just half an hour (150 baht?) by taxi from the city center, or even less if you get your ass up to Mo Chit.

Called True Value before going and they said every branch is sold out for the next two months.

And no rain checks.

I agree with Happyman, buy a real Dremel. The knock-off electronics here are absolutely worthless.

Depends where you are in BKK? There is a great tools shop on On Nut (sukhumvit 77) opposite Soi 42. My neighbor bought a similar tool with a flexible shaft for not much. I have bought two drill presses, a belt sand, a steel cut-off saw etc.. They may not have actual Dremel brand but for sure they have what you want. They have B&D, DeWalt etc..

Or go to Klong Tom (spelling? but phonetically OK) and have a wander.

I've been to Klong Thom before, but it's a little out of the way. And there's usually quite a bit of hunting involved to find things.

I ended up going to Home Pro and got a Black & Decker Dremel style tool for 2331 Baht (with VAT). It has variable speed and an easy change lock. It also comes with a bunch of attachments, but not as much variety as I hoped for.

Says 2 year warranty as well. Considering this is Thailand, I'm not sure how well that works here. I imagine Home Pro would honor it.

I hope it can do the job!
