Just build a raft house, like that famous floating village down Phuket way ....google for pics of Koh Panyi.
Demolish the old house and use the rubble as a base for a parking spot on the shore, pour some concrete over the top if you want to be extravagant. Moor the raft next to it.

    Blimey.

Demolish that and all the others. Build a row of shop houses straight over the middle of the lake taking inspiration from the Ponte Vecchio in Florence. They can then set up a range of financial endeavours from the shops, such as Fish and chips (fish from the lake and potatoes from an aquaponics set up).

Seeing as we are doing pictures, something like this.

One of the questions yet not asked nor answered ... where is the poo going to float?

Being Fish Farmers our land is almost all pond. A relative recently built 'over the water'.

Did a good job actually on his 300 baht a day job. I'll get a few pics a bit later.

The ablutions are the standard holding rings which seep into the water.

The lake is huge and he's a single guy so his output isn't much.

    ---

Back to Wasp's conundrum, it looks like quite a few families, maybe 20/30 mouths feeding
and then ing into the smaller shallow lake.

I feel like this isn't too far down the tack ...

At least the kids can have fun

But Wasp I believe that you are close to the truth with ...

Wasp, what I don't understand is how you got roped into paying for any of this.

    Daughters help/fund their parents usually.

I know you like the Lassie, but you have allowed yourself to get played (just a little)?

If you are going to pay for some of the construction, make a budget, pay only when you see the
building work done. Have a firm ceiling on your contribution.
    Say ... BHT 100,000

Have the strength to just say NO.

    All, of course, IMHO

I understand better now about the land issue and why they all fight so much, its worth some money and probably more money than they can even comprehend.

So I know you want to help Missy but you probably need to remove yourself from the immediate decision making as it will only do your head in especially if doing it from abroad.
If you fill from the edge out then the risk of subsidence is decreased because the fill is not surrounded by water, it would be further reduced if you used rubble rather than soil.

I think David has the right idea, determine how much you are going to contribute and then pay as the work is done. Let them decide how and what they do but make any suggestions you feel might help. By help I mean them and you in that later you could say "well I did suggest...." In the end they will build what they want/can and it will probably not meet our (expat) expectations but then if your not going to live in it who gives a toss.

From what has been said so far 2 things stand out as issues:
    1. The road which may not be put in for another 8 years so "no problem".
    2. The effluent management system, shit in the pond and feed the fishes so "no problem".

How about this idea, fill in around the current house (and it is a house even if our description is a hovel) so it doesn't slide into the pond and continue on until the road coming forces a change.

I know you said early on that you would not come back here but then later contradicted that so if you do return please let me know so we can catch up. You could even take me and show me what you paid for and what they did.

    Cheers

Blimey Waspy, this is a strange one even by your standards!

You're building in a lake which'll later be developed as a road? Is there not somewhere else that a simple construction can be done? Can't a 3,000 baht studio be rented out for the young lady?
    Cycling should be banned!!!

A question of (Thai) family's duties and the consequency of a positive or negative approach is surely not easy to answer and understand by others.

Anyway, after all (and despite of) the advices, when seeing the picture of the pond filling, I would go on this alternative - so easy in Thailand and for the family. Then have it settled over the next rainy season. After one year, in these months, to make a 50cm deep foundation ring, pehaps in the corners a footer 1 m deep, then have the simple house 10x10m built.

You will get rid off the headaches with family and it will make them happy. Then bye, bye...

For better understanding the situation, why you don't find your place in Google Earth, save it in jpg and show it to us, us trustworthy advisers?

Thank you David . I appreciate your words ..... especially the information that your 300-Baht-a-day man doesn't produce a lot of poo .
That will stay with me all day .
And yes .... I've never considered the daughter's poo but when I think about the daughter's poo and I'd rather not think about the daughter's poo I think the daughter's poo goes straight out of her and into that water . Yuck .

Am I being played on this ? No.
English people plan ahead somewhat . As do Australians - Canadians et cetera.
    Thais .... generally don't .
Missy is quite proud of only planning as far as next weekend's fun.

But when she told me that a road will be coming literally skimming the front door of that house it was ME that started thinking what happens then ?

I have no great affection for the daughter . But SHE has not asked for anything either . It's just me having the money and the anticipation that something has to be in place . I'm thinking now I may only build a well-positioned base . Immediately behind the present house .
When the time comes if we simply remove the front wall of that old house she will have a shaded parking area ...... maybe even a shaded food stall directly onto whatever gets built as a road . Giving plenty of time for the base to settle.
So now I'm spending a good deal less and all I need is a solid base . The Thai mix of soil , bones , dogs , tiles , empty tins is being abandoned.
The trucks of crushed rock seem to be the way to go . Let it settle . Concrete over the top . Build a Bowling alley . Probably not.

Yes ..... I think we're getting to a solution to my panics and their indifference.

    Thank you again David.

    Waspy’s Missy has a house
but all’s not quiet as a mouse
Some time a road is coming past
To give her ears a mighty blast
So now he’ll wave a magic wand
to relocate her to a pond
The wise old hands may suggest
for that a boat is surely best
Others here will take the view
that trucks should dump some rocks into
The muddy hole to make new land
on which may rise a shack that’s grand
And someone thinks a bit ahead
enquiring ‘yes, but where’s the head ?’
(since she’ll almost be at sea
a vessel’s head is where you pee)
To rid the house of smelly turds
the plan is not to feed the birds
but instead to push it down
into the pond where it will drown
amongst the fish and evil goo
So those above will never spew
Maybe these plans will give hot grief
    or possibly some cool relief.

    Sensible idea Klondee ......

    Watery Construction-bow-1-jpg

As you can see ...... a huge piece of land in an excellent location for shops and apartments .

    Watery Construction-bow-2-jpg

Just above the daughter you can see they've shaded a 'road' in . Right now it's just an earth trail wide enough for one vehicle .
    That will become a roadway.

Until I looked at this image I hadn't realised how much infill they have done over on the Left .

    Wasn't being funny.....

I just thought it strange that there's never been any mention of any of that family or community living in the sticks, ever going to work in Bangkok as taxi drivers, factory workers or whatever, as I thought most people from Isaan do.

Was it a gogo, soapy or beerbar where you were tallying up?

Hmmm .............. when you see " Dillinger " you have to advance slowly and with caution.

    OK .
Missy - worked anywhere she could find work . From the age of 12 . A plastics factory in Korat : a pig farm outside Korat ( washing pigs ) : a market near Korat : packing vegetables at a Macro : a sookee restaurant ( where I met her ) in Johore : a coffee stand in Korat Bus Station .

It's something I admire . The women who will go anywhere for work for their family . Versus the Thai men who want whisky and cigarettes , cock-fighting and drunkenness.

    Hello Bettyboo !

    No.

She has to stay on that land or lose her share . 7 Million Baht and maybe more .
They have been approached many times to sell the land . It already fronts onto a main road and it would be easy to clear what's on the land .
Could get many apartments and shops onto that parcel of land .

Each family could stroll off with around 7 Million . All they do is live there and walk 6 water buffalo around in circles . And they have more land further out ! But they want to live there and they don't want to live in an apartment . They are content with a primitive and dirty life in the centre of a busy town .

Missy's Mum died just a few years ago - quite young really . Missy was in England . They would have taken her share away from her but Missy has a daughter who is old enough to live there . Free home . Walk to the Market . Not many get that deal . So she's happy enough and there's complete downside if she moved away to rent somewhere .
