Architect Expo, Impact arena

I see that the 2018 Architect Expo starts tomorrow 1 May..... I am assuming that public is allowed, it's not a trade only show ? Has anybody been out to previous years shows ? Worth the trip out there ? Before the GF and I settle on the final details of our design I want to show her some stuff she is not familiar with, such as Colourbond roofing and AAC blocks. She is only familiar with tiles and cheap tin roofing, hopefully the Bluescope rep will be able to explain that Colourbond is not just a "tin roof".

If you can afford Superblock/Q Con go for it, when I built it was aroun 40% + per cubc metre more than sold red bricks and perhaps double the gray blocks but I built walls 24cm thick and have a cool house year round and only need air/fan a few hrs pm in this season.It is also a dream to chase in the water electrics cables etc so you may have flush walls unlike the clip on electrics so "fashionable " heraabouts. If you want a passive cool home visit a temple, thick walls no S facing windows etc.

While needs minimal training the company will show your builder it's low tech lava and using 20x 60 cm blocks can build 3 times faster and pour the columns retro

PM if you need contact details I did a tour of the factory so I had a good grasp on what was a new technique for me , but it is commonly used in public buildings where the running cost are a concern, If a speculator or just a holiday pad for a few moths a year may not be worth the time. Good luck.

No need to convince me, I'm familiar with AAC but it's new for the GF ....just like Colourbond roofing, double wall with cavity, hidden wiring, etc etc. Hoping that the show is open to the public so I can open her eyes to modern materials and techniques ..... we do not have to build just like her sisters' concrete block houses.

As for my verandah it was built by she who's gone Korean so may be recycled.
Good point, tho unless your mrs is a builder engineer or architect ask her to agree to your budget design , I'm sure she'll be happy to deck out a free house.

Tip I had from Queensland Architect school the South wall needs no openings my mrs wanted 3 small galss brick skylights reducing insulation minimally toatl area 1sq metre out of 60 metre S facing facets,

I aligned the SE corner of my cube 6 degrees North as there is always a heat lag , minimal.

I also built a doble pagoda tile roof which drawers heat up and out , an all round balcony and lightboxes, the eaves overhang 1,5 metres not necessary for rain but creates for shade.

If you are able to plant screen trees or have a Southern Shady hill immediately adjacent (shading your walls you may not need.

Q con is same spec I was just impressed with Superblock Public Bdgs Schools Houses I visited in nan by serious thoutful engineer so took there advice no regrets

Will do same on my next project.

Unless your on a tight budget buy max thickness, I'm planning a little studio ad soomer have 30m sq and 20cm walls than the standard 8cm wall and double hot areas, as you can live outside in shaded garden zone, pool,decks,loggias , pergolas , verandas and sheds, a home here is really somewhere to sleep.

It's a good and pertinent Q, for me a no brainer it's like Spy -v- Wine, I wouldn't drink spy if paid.

I cannot quote yoo today as I explained above purchase was higher but as I has a skilled tradesman available it was break even and I wanted to get roof on before the labourers vanished harvesting and rain,regardless of speed the cost was negligible perhaps 4-5% of the total build with benefits for ever. We did c225 sq metres of wall in as many hours approx sq meter per hour of course much gaster at ground level and slower for lintels windows The top course of 28 was poured with rebar as well as all Saos

Due to 5 to steeel and tile roof I did a central "chimney out of red bricj for speed and strength as I had 3 apprentice brickies/hodboys mixwrs and one master mason who was doing the Supeblock faster than I could supply the blocks by the time he was 5 metres up my hall!

I did spend 4 months with a model, doing quantityy surveying and measuring out so that it was full on and from 4 lorries of cement slab to topping of roof 12 weeks pre 2nd fix

Thais seem happy to sleep with air con and have nosiy fans, and trailing wires,conduits up and across walls, all over I am not so building passive cooling was my aim, each to their own.Depends on you taste budget.

The gray blocks that were 3 baht have doubled so imagine have most costs and labour since the minimum wage.

Oh, I agree, a substantive analysis of the objective is necessary. Unfortunately I see the cheapest option constantly being chosen. Possibly due to insufficient funds/planning, more likely different agendas by the parties involved in the decision making or the necessity of "face saving".

Indeed I decided on a small good house but more importantly passive cooling for example today it is the warmest it will get 34 out side but no fan or air needed, its about 24 in my office and as cool as 21 in the bedroom.In the winter ,just December it drops to 12ish occasionaly so I got an oven and the cooking of slow comfort food warms teh entire house to 18 which s ok for me.

Your local builder will want to do the usual villa he's built before so need to decide how hands on you want to be.
One note it is a sealed house in the sense I have no windows and screened French doors 8 pairs and a few glazed solid windows.Works for me, if your getting into design it'll be site specific for the micro climate of your land.

Of course if your happy to pay and HEAR aircon/fans all day it doesn't matter, Here I can just hear teh birdsong and wouldn't wish any other distraction

Don' t bother with fancy kitchen and dining room. When her family come over they will sit on the floor outside on the veranda to eat.

^ We have agreed on the layout, it’s just the materials to be decided. I want AAC walls and Colourbond roofing, materials I am familiar with from Australia but something she has no experience with or knowledge of.
Thats why I was thinking about going out to Impact, if the rest of the show is worthwhile seeing.

My wife has 2 aircon rooms because she likes it.
As for heating yes but only about a week or two a year,We make Pizza and bread or anything that allows slow cook it's called convection, goes over your head.Also important to clean the oven.
There is a constant draw through the building if the roof vents open and only really need one warm roomed where we sleep, of course an open fire is nice for hot air but smelly dirty and morework
