I have a simple reverse osmosis kit I use to drink government water and water from the well.
Regardless of purification I don't think I would drink roof water because of all the bird shit & random animal presence. Reverse osmosis would certainly get rid of any bad stuff but if the system fucks up or falls out maintenance you could get real sick.
And you'd need to push water from the storage tanks to the purification system with a good quality pump and strong constant pressure - another thing to think about.
Why bother? Local water-man brings around 25Ltr bottles of cleaned drinking water at 10 Baht a bottle. Not worth collecting and cleaning yourself. For some reason the Thais think it tastes better if it has bird shit, insect and leaves floating in it.
I paid about 6k fitted for something like this:

Buying water in costs us 1,000 Baht per year on average. 6 persons. No maintenance. Each to their own.
It means he knows you are a fraud Jeff.Quote:

I also always found myself going out to the local water dispenser thingy late at night 1 baht per liter reverse osmosis thing cause we ran out of water.
I keep 4-5 liters in the fridge at all times as well, so its a pain in the dick to fill up other containers.
And there was a few times the white jug wasn't clean, had grit in the water etc...
And I'm a big fat floppy vagina when it comes to sanitation :)
Now I just turn a little valve & get it on tap. Fill up what I wanna fill up & done. No bottles, glass, trade-ins etc to keep up with.
Pink, the Thai Family harvests water directly from the roof.
They wait for the rainy season, let it wash 2 or 3 times, depending on the intensity of the downpour.
Store in in those Jars. They let it settle for some months then we use for drinking/cooking.
I've been drinking it for about 7 years now ... nary a problem. In Thailand, when we live there, we stay with the extended Thai Family so essentially living the Thai Lifestyle.
EDITED to add ...
This is an interesting read ... https://teakdoor.com/farming-and-gard...hink-rain.html
There is a lot of info in this https://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/hawaiir...lines_2010.pdf
Well, that link didn't work, but Google - water catchment system in Hawaii
The First Flush Diverter is surely a clever thing, however, I do not believe that it results in a clean water for an immediate use (provided that it really works).
As of my own experience - beside the first dirt flushed off by the first minutes of rain -the collected water contains a further fine dirt that is laying (and sticking) on the roof and in the gutter. Settling on the roof daily not only from the road but also from the surrounding vegetation. This dirt needs to slowly settle in a storage tank. Then, next 1 - 2 days the clean water can be taken out by an outlet some 10 cm above the bottom.
When you look into the tank after few weeks, you will see at the bottom few cms of a black sludge that has to be regularly (2-3 months) flushed out by an outlet at the bottom level. (The plastic tanks sold in Thailand do have these 2 outlets).
I use such rain water settlement tanks for addition to the main storage water tank, used for house water system and swimming pool. The flow either by a natural gravitation or by a small pump for few minutes (not to forget to switch it off :).
For a faster and better settlement - and for disinfection - is good to add a very miraculous material, in Thailand easy (and cheap) to get - Alum (Alaun) - in Thai SaanSom, a bag for 350 Baht. One stone crystal or a handful of crushed powder to throw into the tank.

Exactly what I have Slick. Works great and has a line plumbed to water and ice maker for my fridge. Love having ice on demand.
We also have a big reverse osmosis carbon tank system by my water tank for all house water that comes from the city. This is for shower and toilets and other sinks. This keeps the lines clean and free of build up. While Yes I could drink that water (and have) I prefer the additional water purification under the kitchen sink for fridge and ice.
I had considered bi monthly water delivery but didn't want to deal with having to be around to answer for the deliveries and signing for it.
As for rainwater off the roof, we have 2 medium sized tanks ( 1 on each side of the house) and we use that for washing dishes, my FIL uses it for washing his clothes( will not use washing machine old school Thai). We also use the water to fill up the lotus pots and wash various things like tools, or feet after working in the yard, sometimes I splash it on me when I am hot and sweaty from yard work etc. We also have 2 wells and use all well water for property up keep.
