yes Dennis.. got it in one...

    From the supplier's website:

'' Ayara Fiber Cement Roof is made of SCG Portland cement mixed with synthetic fiber. The texture will therefore be flexible enough and long lasting. Its light weight helps saving the cost for structure during construction. It has wide ranges of colors offered. The products are widely used in the region, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia.''

I wanted something that hopefully had good strength and durability to cope with that roof curve.

The light weight was also factor

I'm sure you noticed... the tiles are being screwed on, not wired.

    Let's build a roof!

So...they built this interesting lil frame along the ridge just before they started that tiling.

    Anyone know what it is?

I assume its something to do with forming the concrete ridge where the tiles meet at the top from both sides

    I'm probably wrong about that..

Maybe its a support for the tile stacks when they get near the top?

Yeah..I call that bit the 'secondary roof' but its probably got a proper name...

It will be tiled same as the main roof above it. there will be pole-type supports as is tradition.

The underside will have 'conwood' to close off the void, then not will be painted to suit.

I believe the name for your "secondary roof" is that it is a "pent roof" sometimes also called a "shed roof".

Anyway I like the look of the tiles and I think the steel thing they have put one the point of the roof may for them to tie their safety lines to, I would need more than that though on a roof that steep. It wouldn't matter what they put there as I start sweating at 2 meters off the ground so I wouldn't even make it to the bottom of the roof.

ahh, Ooai... I never thought of safety. (lol and that sounds real good coming from me).... it could be that of course.

Tiles are looking good. They are placing them very accurately to keep the lines smooth

    Let's build roof!

    Tiling part 2

Now they are working on all the roofs

I want it to be the safety line but I don't think it is... for a start it is lower than him

I was sort of joking when I said it was a safety line as safety and Thailand together is a bit of an oxymoron.
The cable coming from the guy is the electrical cable powering the drill screwing the tiles on.

    I was joking too.

I am in front of safety 12 hours a day here in Dubai and I also know the standards across a lot of Asia are generally far behind.

Its part cultural, part unscrupulous bosses and the profit motive, part 'life is cheap', part a belief in divine 'protection' until its 'my time'.

and as mentioned before, lets remember that only in the middle east are construction companies trying to build iconic masterpieces with Bangladeshi farmers.

Having said all that, those Asians venturing to the Middle East start to pick up the better habits, especially if you can sell it to them that this could help your family back home too.

K.Pot has obviously been exposed to better practices. He's an educated man - an engineer out of Uni, and also... his work crews have been with him a long time so have got into his way of doing things.

yes... there are still 'safety flip flops and shinning up near -vertical roof trusses but I think hes possibly better than a lot.

Hopefully the current accident-free record will continue until we complete.

The flooring I got came from a lumber yard near you. Can't remember the name but sure you can find a lumber yard that has quality kiln dried tongue n groove mai deang (redwood) near you. Price 12 years ago was 960baht per sq meter. Think near twice that now.

Norton...did you have any idea about that thin metal frame??

Tt's too thin to support a mans weight but i see its been welded onto the ridge of the roof truss joint

Traditional style roof would have a cement ridge, and down the edge tiles. Google the Jim Thompson house for example. I remember reading a build story where they did similar to your pic, but with mesh instead of rebar. Stretched out along the ridge and then bent it down to shape.
If this is the case, it will be interesting to see how they get buckets of concrete up that steep roof of yours !

    Gable ends...

Just thought I would chuck this one in first... that verandah overhang is going to make it really great..

    OK...gable ends

Roof is pushing on too.. this taken before they started the gable-end work

It certainly will, Mike... he's took the crane to one of his other jobs so that option is out.

    All will shortly be revealed.

    (for me as well...)

Yea AP2... thats what I hope my roof ends up looking like, once the tiles have weathered down a little bit.

Although you can't see it yet.... our walls will look like that too!! Read on to see, later why we went with K.Pot over the other guy!

Ahhh AP2... think like a Thai... everything's got to be shiny and new, right!!?

Forget the impracticalities of having a mirror finish floor, shiny walls, etc etc.

I want to try n recreate something old, or looking old so for me that Jim Thomson roof is great!!

I expect PJ will lacquer everything to a gloss finish tho....!

Me too. Rustic, weathered, been there 100 years but standing up well... tried and tested through time, but somehow solid and good.
