I really don't care what you think, it works extremely well for me and if you do not understand you are clearly not competent enough to install you own, so go and get ripped off elsewhere.

No reason to get nasty. Just looking at it and it doesn't seem possible. Thats all.Originally Posted by mykthemin
You are calling me a lier, so what do you expect, you are clearly a very inexperienced book electrician, absolutely clueless, just go rotate your tyres and waste your time not mine.
I was trying not to call you a liar because you may have been telling the truth and I was trying to be open to having my view changed, but not so much now.Originally Posted by mykthemin
I just don't believe you can run all that on that small of a generator.
You could always prove it with a walk through vid.
55555555555, works for me great and has for many years, I really do not care if you believe or not.
Sorry Rick, this guy is a total troll.
He could have explained it that way, but he didn't.
Still don't believe.

This thread started off with a genuine request for help. Some offered it and some gave good advice while others, feeling obliged to comment, wrote nonsense. On balance it would seem that the thread is worthwhile but the childishness displayed in recent posts is not helpful to anybody..
What a particular generator is able to run is easily determined by having regard to the power they draw at startup and that which they draw when settled and running. It's just arithmetic.
You don't even have a generator, nor ever had one, nor even worked with them, so wtf are you on about?Originally Posted by Digby Fantona
Thank you Vocal Neal, I try to help Rick and get the idiot, with all negatives and no good suggestions, and probably lives in a 1 room condo, I can assure you it works great.
You're clearly upset. Have I hurt your precious sensitivities?Originally Posted by mykthemin

You will have no problem at all. I had no power for a week after Cyclone Yasi did her shit. We basically lived in the bedroom (roads cut initially so no work!!) Ran the A/c (4x4m3 room), fridge, tv, bedside lamps etc off a 2.6kw genny no problem. Had a Weber gas setup to cook. Forgot to mention the house pump for cold showers and flushing the toilet.
6.5KVA (not 6.5KW, generators are always rated in KVA) will be more than enough for your needs.
You could safely go smaller and save some cash. You are only looking for a backup power supply not a permanent power station.
Edit to add: I used extension cords to power everything no fancy cutover switch. Worked for us....I'm an electrical engineer.
Can you update on what you ended up buying?

I have a Honda EU3000i generator for back up. Gas power. Can run in ECO mode and 1 tank of fuel will last 14 hrs. DB rating 49. Cant even hear it. I brought it with me from the US. Haven't every had to use it here but if I do I will run extensions cords to items I need to keep running. I do however understand that some that live in areas with regular power outages so maybe hard wiring into the house electrical system is better.
Rick, As a side note if you are still checking this thread, I'd look into one that runs on LPG. I have seen the conversion kits. That would be far better then regular or diesel fuel.
Rick is currently in the states but should be back here soon when we last talkedOriginally Posted by mudcrab
I purchased a 13,750kw Propane Generator from Central Maine Diesel a few years ago.
20 HP Honda engine, Italian generator head.
Paid about $2300 plus shipping via Paradise Freight which was a few hundred.
I see the price is just a bit higher now... But the one I want most is Cummins which i saw from a website.
Recently it blew a capacitor. Central Maine sent me 2 for the price of one even though it is out of warranty. $39 total for two.
I looked at generators on island but a similar Honda at Quality electric was close to $6000 and it wasn't even a 13750kw. More like 8 or 9000kw if I remember right.....
They have many generators at great prices but this is the one I settled for.
Quiet, no smell, propane lasts forever........
