As you can probably see all around you, if it's at all possible to construct something out of concrete then no stone will be left unturned to make it happen in glorious grey concrete. In the West you often come across steel bridges and other structures, but in Thailand, concrete rules!
Of course it doesn't have to look ugly, and you can even make it look somewhat acceptable using coloring and applying a profiling/relief to it. (Google "Stamped Concrete")
This is what my neighbour did recently; he had a perfectly fine cement driveway, and within 2-3 days or so the whole thing was cut away and a colored concrete tile-like pattern was poured. Apparently it's an easy, cheap and durable way to create a floor/road/driveway that looks pretty okay. [ Edited from the original as quoted by Buad Hai below ]
