    Do More with Concrete!

As you can probably see all around you, if it's at all possible to construct something out of concrete then no stone will be left unturned to make it happen in glorious grey concrete. In the West you often come across steel bridges and other structures, but in Thailand, concrete rules!

Of course it doesn't have to look ugly, and you can even make it look somewhat acceptable using coloring and applying a profiling/relief to it. (Google "Stamped Concrete")

This is what my neighbour did recently; he had a perfectly fine cement driveway, and within 2-3 days or so the whole thing was cut away and a colored concrete tile-like pattern was poured. Apparently it's an easy, cheap and durable way to create a floor/road/driveway that looks pretty okay. [ Edited from the original as quoted by Buad Hai below ]

What do you suggest for a driveway/carport?

Original re-used imported Belgian cobblestones from mid evil villages.

Or if cost is an issue: Exactly this kind of stamped concrete I suppose.

These concrete tiles would make an ideal path that I have in mind. Thanks for the idea.

They are not tiles hillbilly, it's poured concrete that then has a mould stuck on top which is then pressured down a little bit.

So DD, when are you going to get a mould and start doing driveways and paths?

Honestly wish that I had been aware of something like this, when a few months ago, had my new drive and house surrounds tiled!

one very good use for concrete was used mostly by Eyetalians, take your xwife, stick her feet in a big plastic bucket, fill with concrete and the next morning, throw her and the bucket in the bay.

I think price wise it wouldn't work out a lot cheaper than tiling your driveway, thats if you used colorant and sealer etc.

This is an old concept, too, but I think it looks nice for walkways: pour the squares of concrete and press big leaves or other textured items on them for patterns.

This is VERY exciting: Turns out they were by no means nearly done when I took the pics. Since then there'es been three days of guys with a brush/pencil of some kind adding color in between the 'tiles' to make them look like tiles/rocks. ALso some protective lacquer went on. It looks real nice now, will post pictures tomorrow.

Ok, took some pictures this morning, and also chatted with the Lady of the House.. I keep being amazed at her English, absolutely no hint of a Thai accent and uses phrases like "We did consider tiles, but we felt they're just not 'outdoorsy'." Chinese-Thai woman with enough taste to realize tiles shouldn't be plastered all over the $*(#$# place.. What are the odds.

Anyway, she didn't remember the cost per square meter, but the whole deal (which is a bit larger than for an average house) came to 80,000 baht. You can pick from a gazillion of patterns and colors.

She also told me they're almost done, just some final touch ups left to do.

BTW, it's not wet, this is the actual glossy finish.

She's absolutely right which is why I don't want tiles on my driveway, but I'm running out of options. Aside from the glossy finish, I like the look of that stamped concrete. Anyone know how thick they pour the concrete to make that look?

I need an alternative to tile, but it can't be any more than 2 or 3 cm thick.

It would only need to be 1 to 2cm thick, that is aslong as the underneath is concrete.

Can't help wondering if they are as slippery when wet as ordinary tiles?

No I think they're a lot rougher. I'll go check after a rainshower.

They will be a lot rougher, only problem I can think of is that the lacquer will start peeling after a few months due to the intensity of the sun here.

Can you leave the lacquer off? Or, since this is Thailand, is a shiny surface legally required?

Yeah the lacquer is not needed, but when it is first done it sure makes it look good, but to keep it looking good does involve a lot of work.
