    UPVC Windows

Taking a break from earwiggy ...

my house build is coming on well (very well, thanks to an excellent builder) but I am now looking for a UPVC window and door supplier, preferably in Udon or Khon Kaen. All the windows are custom sizes, so the standard sizes from HomePro, etc, aren't a possibility.

I originally had a manufacturer / supplier in Loei, but for various reasons they're no longer in the frame.

I am ideally looking for any information about UPVC window suppliers and fitters in Udon and Khon Kaen as my house is in Loei, so I prefer a local supplier in case there are any breakages or problems later - its a long way to /from Bangkok or Pattaya if just a handle needs replacing.

I would also appreciate any feedback from anyone who's had UPVC windows fitted and has any views on who's good and who's bad.

So far I've had quotes from the following and found the following information about them on various forums:

Hoffen, Bangkok. The cheapest, by a considerable margin. Not particularly good reports on forums, and a little wary of only a 90 day guarantee. (quote: 568k).

Windsor, Udon. Windsor windows are fitted by PD House and seem the basic 'standard' in Thailand. Big company. Also an agent / supplier in Khon Kaen I haven't been to yet. (quote: 742k).

Deku, Pattaya. Similar price to Windsor. Mixed reviews. (quote: 750k).

ARC (Veka), Pattaya. Mixed reviews, mainly over 'attitude' some customers didn't appreciate. (quote: 845k).

Trade UPVC, Pattaya: Good reviews, expensive. (quote: 930k).

Hevta, Samutsongkram: No information, expensive. (quote: 930k).

    Anybody know anything ???

Jesus Christ, at those prices either they all used to sell windows out of Essex, or I'm getting into the double glazing game in Thailand.

I've used Euro PVC in Pattaya on 2 properties and I'm more than happy with them.

I owned a couple of DG/Conservatory companies in the UK so I had half an idea what to look for. I say half an idea because the UK is fucking cold and here it's just fucking hot.
I would post pictures but life's too short.

I've used Hoffen and Windsor on a DIY basis. Pick my brains if you wish.

Know of 3 in Roiet who have used them. All satisfied with product and service. They also used windsor for rain gutters.

    We used Hevta.

Quality of source material is excellent. We used tempered glass for some windows and laminated double glazed glass for others.

Beware that you need to be present on site during installation to avoid shortcuts or bodge jobs.

If that means sitting on their shoulders then do it. They will take short cuts given the chance. Hence why I DIY'd and let them only do the donkey work. When I was satisfied with the fit then I let them finish off.

When we had our place done, the installation crew was a sub-contractors team. A supervisor came by once a day to check. He had several projects to supervise around the area, so he spent all of 20mins at our place each day. The whole installation took about 6 days.

Be very-very-very careful of the apprentice assigned to handle the caulk gun.

    Good luck.

    I "wish"!

Hoffen and Windsor seem to get very different reviews and are very different prices - Hoffen are so much less I had to double check to see if they had included installation and mosquito nets!

I note from your other thread that you only talked about Hoffen windows - what were your views comparing the two?

... particularly the hardware (handles, hinges, etc) which have come in for a slamming with Hoffen, particularly as they only have a 90 day guarantee?

I'm also guessing that if you do the installation yourself, as you did, you may not get any guarantee at all ... correct?

I haven't had confirmation yet, but apparently the Windsor quote didn't include mosquito nets while all the others do, either priced separately or included in the overall prices. If that's correct, then considering that those who priced them separately priced them between 100,000 and 250,000 baht, that could make a major difference to comparative prices.

At the moment I'm between Windsor because they're cheaper and local (in Udon) and Trade UPVC because they're known quality, but I haven't made a choice yet. At 900,000 baht or so it's a bit more than just popping down to HomePro and changing a few windows!!

Hevta seem very good, but they're a bit of an unknown quantity and that 'sub-contracting' worries me. I'm in rural Loei, and the chances of good sub-contractors is zero, as I've found out - my first builders, who fortunately 'only' built a wall, were from Loei city but sub-contracted and supervised very occasionally and the only good thing I can say about them is that their office in Loei is now closed. My current builders (Nuja land & House) are from Udon, but I can't say enough good about them - no sub-contracting, excellent work, and excellent on-site supervision.

    Why did you choose Hevta?

Possibly true, but hardly justified based on the prices - for all you know I could be building the Crystal Palace!!

I've seen some pretty cr@p UPVC windows, but to be fair there really isn't any comparison with aluminium except at the bottom end of the former and the top end of the latter. To put it into perspective, the windows and doors will make up more than 25% of the overall cost of the build and make a massive difference to the house.

Guarantees are a hard thing to claim here as I'm sure you're aware of. Anyways I bought Hoffen from Homepro. Homepro gave me 14 days to find fault, post delivery, and they would change. Being as I live 70km from the store I checked them all on delivery as I would be liable for return cost. Plus my windows were over 2m wide. Not an easy job to return.
Yes Hoffen are about half the price of Windsor but I really can't see why. They're as good as each other. So why did I buy Windsor and Hoffen? Because Windsor and Hoffen had the ready made windows in the size I wanted. If Hoffen had all my sizes then all my windows would be Hoffen
I've seen Hoffen slated on forums as having window locks that break easily. I don't find this. I think it's down to a locking catch that if not opened correctly will make a person put more pressure on the locking catch causing it to break, may be? I really can't see how they can break.
Hoffen and Windsor are equally good in my book. The choice is yours.

Christ JohnG do the job yer self. I DIY'd my windows 16 in total. 9 were over 2m wide the rest average and cost to me was around the 80,000 Baht figure. With the 9 x 2m+ ones I paid 3 locals to help me at 12,000 Baht. The rest I did by myself.

MrG both Hoffen and Windsor Ready Made both come with mosquito net protection. Can leave windows open at night. Also they came with all fitting screws, rawlplugs, packing wedges and instructions.

MrG none of my ready made just slotted in. I either bricked up or cut out to get my windows to fit. The hardest part of the job was removing the old windows. Hard fcuking work that was.

At not far off a million baht for the windows and doors I really don't think DIY is the way to go - the windows / doors are up to 2.40m high by up to 4.40m wide, so I don't see this as a DIY job, or at least not one that I'd feel up to handling.

Where quoted separately the installation charge is around 10% of the price; since in all cases but Hoffen that gives a ten year guarantee, or at the very least a guarantee that if anything gets broken in installation or soon after it'll get replaced, I think that's a price worth paying.

Has anyone heard anything about Vignet windows?

I've just sent them an e-mail so will wait for a reply, but the only reference I can find to them, apart from advertisements, is the following from another forum that gave no more details:

    VIGNET TB 4,875
VEKA TB 7,800 White and Other Timber Grain Colors
EK DECORATE WINDSOR TB 9,490 (White or Black)
EUROPVC TB 9,130 (White) to TB 10,760 (Black or Wood Grain)
HEVTA TB 11,837 (Didn't bother to ask about colour options)

That's literally about half the price which seems too good to be true (so very probably is) but has anyone heard anything about them - or even heard of them?

    Why did you choose Hevta?
Because of the quality of their source material. Peonek profiles, GU handles, etc.

The outside sub-contractor team was an unexpected issue. Especially, an orang-utan with wielding the caulk gun.

In the end everything was sorted, and 5 years on our doors and windows look as good as new.

Any help much appreciated, particularly if it's personal experience and you're happy with the quality ... sorry, but I'm not sure which city you're in / talking about?
