Unhappy A Simple Wasp Request From A Simple Wasp - Painting.

Out there in the Paradise known as Issan there is one Somchai who has done some work for us .
He has built up a wall at our request .

However ..... the wall looks a bit odd to me . It's made of those cheap ' cindery ' blocks and I want to have the whole wall painted in a decent paint .
But given the porous nature of the wall I do want an undercoat put on .

When they did the house they put blue paint straight onto the house render and this has flaked off .

So ......... can anyone of you more seriously knowledgeable people point me to what should be the first coat here please ?

I would imagine it needs more than a straightforward Undercoat as I suppose Undercoat is intended for indoor walls .
I need to tell this chappy EXACTLY what to go and get . As I'm not there .

    Danke .

1 Clean surfaces wit wire brush
    2 Size ,render
3 Select a good quality external paint,Leave last 20cm/8 inches of the ground for splashes from earth,Of course if you plan to tile and want asqueaky clean enviroment paint to base.
4 Plan B we planted some wall creepers ,they take a few years to cover the whole wall but suits us.
5 For maintainence free I would tile, but of course that is costlier

    What does " Size " mean ? Please ?

Also .... I wasn't planning to render this wall .
Just paint it but I wanted a paint job that will last .

And david thank you for the speedy advice .

Size is essentially under coat. A primer. Thin white stuff. Put it on then use a good exterior paint over it.

If you don't render expect lots of mold discoloring.

I've used Undercoat at home in UK . Just plain inexpensive stuff .

I assumed that on an outside wall , in blistery heat , on a texture that is crumbly I would need some stuff that was almost a render in itself !

But if straightforward Undercoat will do the job then I'll do that .

    And thank you both .

Norton ... when you say I'm gonna get mold discolouration any way .... do I need to bother with an undercoat ? Will a good quality of exterior paint give me pretty much the same result ?

Get a quote on labour only and tell them you’ll supply the material. Don’t let anyone mix water with the paint.

That wall should be properly finished before painting it.

I can see the sense in making sure they don't dilute anything with water .
Problem is I'm not there .

But right now it's my not knowing how to " properly finish the wall before painting " that's giving me concern .

Do the undercoat. Will make the paint adhere better. As you say it's cheap.

Painting over concrete block will still leave dimples. Mold likes dimples and will grow there.

If you put 2 coats of good exterior paint on it will fill the pores in the block some so will help keep mold down and cleaning easier.

Concrete primer (undercoat) and good exterior paint available all over Thailand. I use TOA but no big difference with other brands.

OK . You mean render .

No good me asking you if I then ignore you guys so it seems I must render or cover with creepers as david did .
I'm not keen to give a home to more spiders , ants and snakes - so it's render.

But your other words are sticking in my mind . About diluting the paint .
And it's too easy - if I am not there - to charge me for 6 big containers of paint but only buy 4 and dilute it .
Certainly wouldn't be the first time in History for that to happen .

So I'm taking all the advice . Render seems to be needed .
And I'll let the guy go until I am there in January to supply the materials and avoid the shortcuts .
Thank you all for the very useful guidance .

    Happy New Year too !!!

I found this from you Norton - AFTER I had written the above .

So it seems maybe I don't really NEED to render . Just follow what you are saying .

But I'm gonna do as I said . ...... meaning I'll put it off until I'm there .
This guy seems to be a good one and he's twiddling his thumbs right now so I was keen to send him off TODAY to buy stuff .
But there'll be no harm for him to come back in 3 weeks after his New Year celebrations and I'll be there then.

    Many Thanks .

Looks as if the unfinished wall needs to be cement glazed first before any painting can proceed.

    Duh.

I'm not sure the " Duh " is needed .

I don't know the right procedure so I say so and I ask .

Nobody else feels the need to be mocking .

    Waspy,
As others have said, finish the wall first with cement. Those blocks are like sponges with big voids and if you do not finish it properly the paint will simply not hold up. If you do not want to cement over it because you want or like the "Brick" lines I highly recommend sandblasting, primer and paint.

Either option is money well spent.

It was just a cost thing JPPR . I've got other things on which to spend my Bahts and nobody in this whole area puts cement render on their walls .
It looks like an extravagance . So for the two reasons I was looking to paint it a dark Green .

I appreciate people's advice .... and the consensus is that I should cement render so I'm thinking I'll do the other jobs and come back to this if there are funds to do it well .

Let me repeat my appreciation .

You need to render if you don't want mould and you need to render both sides of the wall and the top. Those blocks are porous, absorbs water, and the water will stay inside the block days after the last rain.

The undercoat is an solution which will create a thin acrylic film on top of the render which your acrylic paint will stick to so don't use any additives for sealing the surface when mixing the mortar for rendering, the undercoat wants a porous surface in order to get a grip in the cement.

Choose a good paint (outdoor, anti-mould), don't dilute it with water, apply two layers of paint and it will last 10-15 years before you'll have to repaint it.

lom ..... if we have the Bahts to do a render we were NOT intending to render the other side . That's the neighbours land .
Would be up to them and they will never do it .
They contributed nothing to the wall so we will not render their side .

Are you saying this would create a potential problem ?

You really should have it smooth rendered

Once that's dry use a cement stabilising solution (buy it in 5 L + size containers) and use a garden spray to apply it. It's thin, runny like water but will soak in and dry leaving a non porous finish. Then just roller a couple of coaots of Jotun exterior over it

Rendered is best but painting concrete block is common. Clean up the wall. Use a good undercoat and a good exterior paint. Light first coat then 1 or 2 more. Will look just fine.

I haven't read the other posts. I think the guy has done you a good wall. He hasn't rendered it yet but when he does it will look better. Don't paint it. Either way it will discolour. Leave it natural and accept it. mines been built nearly 9 years and I live with it. Who you trying to impress?

Thank you Lostandfound .... and of course Norton .

    Pragmatic ..... I haven't said anything about "impressing " anyone .
So asking me " Who are you trying to impress ? " is just one of those aggressive questions that baffle me . Why do people turn aggressive like that ? It's a wall away from anyone's view . But the bottom section is older and it looks untidy . So I thought I would give the guy some work and ask him to paint it .

It's not to " impress " him or anyone at all .

    It's just some tidying .

You tidy sometimes don't you ?

Or is that just to " impress " somebody ?
