Outside I guess or even better a Pitbull...great dogs...
Personally, I find this sort of practical décor more than a bit tacky...
The aesthetics loose the connection.
Find a living locale where one doesn't need to install unnecessary security.
When you are required to "imprison" your house - that's not living.
Totally unnecessary.
Good quality windows and a decent alarm system are all you need. Add a few internal lights that go on and off at random, external motion activated spot lights and a few security cameras (real or dummy)
Unless you're expecting a mass zombie attack or something.

Thaimeme, and others you make some very true points. The way my house is set up it is a mixture of different buildings. This is for a music room where I have a few expensive guitars. Closed windows in the heat during the day...well, the wood guitars hate it...Do not want to leave the aircon on full time, but wish to leave the windows open some. This is the answer....I believe...some bars and open windows....sure folks can still get in but it would slow them down some.
I prefer shutters. Either the standard outside ones or the German roller style shutters. They look better, don't give the impression of fear/isolation and don't hinder your escape in a fire. The German style can be electric or hand operated, whichever suits your budget.
