    Mortise / mortice deadbolts

A somewhat dull topic to ask a question on, but does anyone know where I can get a traditional mortice deadbolt type lock in Thailand. I'm after something like this:

The idea is that I don't want any of the lock showing on our front door, but just to have as small keyhole. I've checked both my local Homepro and Global House, as well as spent at least five minutes scouring all the lock shops in Chaiyaphum and can't find what I'm after. At best they have either something like this...

... which I don't really want as the lock cartridge thing will stick out of the door.

I'm even less keen on the alternative, which is a large sort of wart thing like this:

To cast the net a little wider, if any Malaysia based readers have seen these somewhere in KL then please let me know as I should be be down there in a week or two so could pick one up then.

    Thanks all

No I havn't seen any either, I had to use a "wart" type thing on our store room. I wanted that room really secure because thats where we keep our golf clubs. The wife has a set of Ping's which cost a packet. But thats all academic now because the frigging door has swollen and we can't close it.

Cheers BD, our first front door had a wart, as does the kitchen door. The front door was a Global House affair that we both hated with a passion but was bought as we needed something quick. We've just changed it to a pair of more traditional doors - yes, yes, I know I should be posting photos but I've been too lazy to take any - hence the wish for something a little more subtle on the lock front.

Might see if I can get one sent from Blighty, they're as cheap as chips there and about as plentiful. The only concern I have with that is that I do tend to lose keys remarkably regularly and having to get new ones cut in Europe would, I think, become the cause of considerable vexation after a while.

I might trawl Chatuchat one weekend. There's all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff in there.

I bought mine at homepro in BKK.

Edit. Nothing showing - no. Has a small brass cap and a Banham type key. Suffice to say the entire door would have to come off, frame and all before, the lock would give. Not saying much though, you can shoulder barge most doors/locks unless they're high-security.
First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.

Cheers Albert, my local Homepro is a bit anaemic so perhaps a BKK one would be a better idea. Do you remember which branch you got it from?

I would say the biggest branch I've seen in BKK (not too many) is the Ratchada branch. About 1-2km north of Fortune Town. Absolutely massive store. You're right. My local one is Wave Place in Ploenchit and it's got a quarter of what they stock in the Ratchada one (if that).

Remember the lock is only as strong as the frame so it has to be re-inforced. If you're using a standard wood frame it's never that secure.

    On a side note.

They sell fingerprint entry systems there now for as low as 10-15k. Really nice bit of technology that means you don't have to carry house keys anymore.

Thanks Albert. I didn't know about the Rachada one, that sounds just the job. I'll have a crack at that the next time I'm in BKK.

The fingerprint locks are pretty cool, but I suspect that it will be buggered up pretty quickly here in Isaan and then 'fixed' with bits of wire, a few 6 inch nails and some old washing machine parts. The net result will be it'll both lock me out of the house and mean I'll need to buy a new lock, quite possibly with new doors, sometime in the future.

Being double doors they are never going to be terribly secure, so it's really just a day lock. I'm toying with putting in brackets on each side of the doors so I can drop in a strongback type beam when we're going to leave the house for a few days - means leaving the house through the kitchen door though. I may not bother as anyone wanting to break in can always just lob a brick through a ground floor window, but I suppose that's cheaper to fix than getting new doors were they to be kicked in...

    Decisions decisions...
