CCTV systems, any experience/knowledge in LOS?

We're looking at installing a cctv system to monitor the front gate, the front and back of the house.

Were installing a couple of movement detector flood lights, 650 baht ea. from the local store, all good.

Bit of a problem locating a 3-4 camera cctv system up here in the hills.

If any one has any suggestions, experience, recommendations or ideas they'd be appreciated.

^Nothing specific, JJ, as I'm in the Philippines, but a few general comments: We have put these in for some private residences, but I usually have recommended against it. The CCTV cameras are of little utility unless somebody is monitoring them, and most people find that the interest in doing so fades quickly. As for motion detector floods, I often found that strong winds or wandering critters would set them off. Depending on how they are set up, and proximity of neighbors, they can also piss off the neighbors when floods light up their bedroom at 3 AM. I run a security company, and have neither. I do have regular perimeter lights on the wall, five big dogs, and a range of weapons. Works for me. Just observations; hope you get your problem sorted.

I don't see the point with CCTV systems that doesnt record to a HD. Isn't that when you need it the most, when you are not home? I suppose you can see "them" anyhow if you are home, so whats the point with the cam?

Pantip in BKK has ready made recording systems, cheap.

We have two reasons for installing a cctv system.

    1. to see who's pounding on the gate.

    2. to monitor the front of the house when we're at the back and visa versa.

I appreciate what you're saying there DK. Makes sense, however in our case the neighbours aren't a problem and weapons are definitely out.

I'd be the first one she'd shoot.

HD recording ? Yes, I'd want that Scandi.

I just sometimes wish there was a Pantip in our neck of the woods. No, belay that I don't.

Thanks for the input both of you.

Definitely the case but if you really want a CCTV system they can be found in varying levels of complexity and price at Pantip Plaza or Fortune Tower in Bangkok.

Theses work quite nicely as well.

Claymores, brilliant kit. Had lots of fun with them back in the 70's

    Splendid stuff.

I have a friend who sells dummy CCtv cameras out of Chiang Mai. Basically they look the same as the real ones with a red light and they but don't actually do anything.

Same outcome as having real ones over here. I think they sell for 350 THB. Pm me if you're interested and I'll give you his #

Here's what he says about them:

Motion dectecting sensor. Motorized pan movement. Activation light. Realistic appearance No wiring needed. Battery operated. When motion is detected, sensor light comes on and camera starts to swivel. Mounted with screws at the base.

Anyone that has security equipment installed where the mains cable to the house is accessible on the outside of the property, as in Thailand, then it ain't worth a salt to install it. You may feel safer, but any burglar worth his salt would poison the dogs and disconnect the power. Both very simple to do for a Thai. Sorry to be so blunt, once again, JJ. I speak from experience having been done twice.

Superman, my old mate, you've a tendency to sway toward the negative. Nothing wrong with that, but my own tendency is toward the more positive.

    Let me explain.

IMHO there is absolutely no way one will ever stop a died in the wool crook, who's determined to rob your house.

Be it Thailand, England, Australia or the Isle of Man.

The best bet, in my view, is to discourage the opportunist. Dissuade the passer by.

    And hope for the best.

I'm a bit of an optimist at heart, and, having lived in some pretty dodgy environments over the years find that the advertised fact that you, the perpetrator, are being filmed, certainly puts off the passing opportunist crook.

    We'll see.

    Happy days.

Most cctb gear in thailand tens to be shit quality chinese stuff. Power supplys fail within a week and cameras that fail after a few weeks in the elements. And its not cheap either.

if I were you i owuld get a few 1 megapixel wireless webcams and link those up to a computer in the house, you should be able to find some software that will record to HD for you. cheap and effective.
...Believe me the chinese stuff is shit, I've has about 30,000 bahts stuff fail on me this year at the place where I work.

^^True. You can adjust the sensitivity. But I'm not sure that feature will be on one that cost 650 Baht.

^Amazing thread. GREAT job and a great idea! We built a house here in the Philippines about two years ago. 600 sq meter lot (about 1/4 size of yours). 250 sq. m downstairs; 280 sq m upstairs. Still plenty of room for a pretty good sized garden. Took 9 months start to finish. Like you, blessed with a smart wife and a good foreman and hard-working crew.

Good on ya. I guess we both got lucky. We've been working on it for over a year now and still got loads to do.

No rush though. I reckon it'll be another 6 months or so before we move in, maybe longer.

I had to promise her that we wouldn't get stressed out about it. Managed that, more or less, so far.
