Electrical wiring, the proper way.

Today I visited Klong Toeh head Office Electrical Department Bangkok.

On display they had a complete wiring diagram for a house.

It was spot on, Exactly how things would be done in the real world.

Power points, water heater and Air Con all wired in the correct sized cable, that being 2.5 ML twin and Earth.

Lights wired in 1.5 Ml and the main Earth wired to the Earth Spike.

I could not establish if the 1.5 Ml light cable had an earth.

In the real world this is a must.

Anyway, if one wants Electrical work done properly go to the Government approved office and not Somchai the Back yarder.

Thailand does has correct standards if the proper people are sourced.

There must be thousands of miles of domestic cable in this country with no earth. Most of it in resorts, where demand and profits are high, and workmanship and safety are very low.
Contractors have one eye for profit and the other for cheap unqualified labour. Even western controlled schemes are often cowboy builds.

I had an electric shower installed by a qualified self employed sparky. Local lad from the village. He looked at the job and then gave me a list of stuff he needed, plus a quote for his labour.
On the top of his list was a big fuck off earthing spike. Jobs a good un.

Another thing being that 2.5 ml twin and earth is a shit load bigger than 1.5 ml cable.

So most Somchai's will always go for the easy and cheaper option as he did in my Gaff.

Aye, but you've got to know what "proper" looks like. If you're at all uncertain, you may as well get a sparky from your own country to do it, and fly 'em out there for a holiday to sort you out. So many electricutions in places like Thailand.

Whether lights need to be earthed depends entirely on the fixtures used, just like any other appliance, many of which come with a supply isolated 2 pin configuration.
Not a "must" by any means.

Glad he is happy, but one needs to look at the current required. Our water heater and kitchen appliances required a run of 4 sq mm wire.

There are 2 kinds of radial circuit, 20amp circuits wired with 2.5mm cable and 30amp circuits, with 4mm.


I woulkdn't feel safe sleeping in terry''s 'gaff' with his 1.5mm wire unless there was a Smoke alarm and a butt plug handy

This is a fair statement but I trusted my very competent maintenance man to source the Electrician.

As I said, it's my Fault though for leaving him to it and not checking.

Lot of shit advice that was, still had to pay cash.

Anyway, I walked all the way home to Silom so got in some nice exercise.

On that point, does anyone know where I can pay my Leccy bill by credit card. ?

I used to do house installs when I was an Apprentice Electrician.

Done 4 years and flounced out on the 5th Year though.

I'm referring to Australian wiring regulations which dictate the 1.5 ml wiring cable must also have an Earth.

The reason for this is so when a person chooses a light fitting with a metal body it can be Earthed properly.

Further more, I have a metal based free standing light that only has two pins so that means if it shorts out the metal base can become live.

Amazing Thailand at work here.

Firstly, I am talking normal house hold appliances where 2.5 ml and Earth is the norm, I'm not taking 3 phase or heavy draw.

Secondly, you are spot on with that, I have been thinking about ripping out Somchai's inferior install and redoing the foking thing.
