Waste water treatment the natural way

By popular demand of one i will start this off, waste water management from India using a natural occurring soil composite that reduces hard metals and shit apparently.

    [URL="http://www.wastewatertreatment.co.in/pdf/Treatment-of-municipal-wastewater-using-laterite-based-constructed-soil-filter.pdf[/URL]

I would love to know if someone can translate the diagram to a cost of making it looks like 2 pumps, and piping plus the laterite block.

    suggestions?
im hot its so hot today.......milk was a bad choice!

closing statement which seems of great interest.

    "Conclusions
CSF with laterite soil medium facility shows high-degree
removal of COD, BOD, ammoniacal-N, nitrite-N, suspended solids
and turbidity thereby imparting crystal clearness to water, color as
well odor removal and total green ambience. Due to its low energy,
green ambience, production of soil and fertilizers, chemical contaminants and pathogen removal, CSF is only one of its kind which
proves a better option to treat, recycle and reuse wastewater for
non-potable water as from gardens, washing roads, floors, cars and
side drains, for cleaning toilets, and for construction"

I suppose the problem is they would need communal areas of land to process it and i think property in mumbai is becoming very expensive. Countryside is ok, but anyway we are talking about Thailand not India.
The composite soil/rock is available here and i like how this could fit in with peoples land and a natural filtering solution like with reed beds. It seems more simple though apart from the pump/ pipes.

Agree, In my Koh Samui House I had a 3 tank system ( or should I say 3 sets of concrete rings ),up here in Isaan my 2 tank system has been fine and hasn't been emptied in 8 years. Just don't put Bleach or Tissue down the toilet and you never have to worry about it.

This is a "municipal" waste system used in Mumbai. Might work fine for municipal systems in Thailand but for us folks where no sewage is available more practical to use septic tanks.

Luckily most of the people in our Village only have the one tank ( with a solid concrete bottom ) and have it emptied about every 2-3 months. I guess if everyone used the same system as me there could be a possibility ground water contamination for those that have wells .
My second tank is about 3 meters deep.I put in 4 big sack of charcoal and smashed them down hard, then hard core left over from the house build and then 3/4 barrow loads of rock chips ( the type used in concrete).
Some good info and advice here....Ground Water and the Rural Homeowner

I have a concrete septic tank as well, last time emptied, 200 baht! Hasn't been emptied before since I've been here,1.5 years and only because I asked them to empty the "shit" so 200 baht in 1.5 year, seems like a good deal, I'll stick with that.

Shower and washing machine just go outside.

In the new temp building, today they have done the plumbing, all but the toilets (one for us and a small one for the kid(s)) just go outside, including the wash basins, washing machine and all other "grey"water, just go out in the ditch next to the road, works fine for me.

If that's what they have always done here, it's good enough for me.
If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough.

you should never have to empty a septic tank

if you just have a simple on ring system, that is called a cesspit, not a septic tank, and may need emptying now and then

I read up on 'should you, or should you not put toilet paper in your septic tank'? The answer was 'yes' if biodegradable. Simple test other than reading the package is to put a piece of your roll in some water and shake for 10 seconds. If it breaks up then it's okay to flush.

Hey doc 200 baht every 1.5 years...... Not going to worry me, can do it every month for that price. (every day would be fine too!) What is 200 baht, 7 -Australian dollars, 5 euro? Pffff sorry can t get exited about the costs. Please clean my tank whenever I want and I will!

You want to do it doc? Clean the shit out of tanks for a nominal fee? Give me your price please.....(I get sick by the idea alone!)

But again 200 baht? Not going to break the bank is it. Wonder how your tenants are doing with their cess,,,, pits, get real doc? it costs next to nothing!

I (and you) wouldn't come out of bed for 200 baht to suck up shit!

And yes I put my shit in the tank, the "moist" toilet paper, everything, don't give a .... Yes SHIT!

How dirty is it that people throw anything that touches their ass put in in a '"rubbish"bin, sorry don't like that at all, it's dirty, it's full off contaminants, thank you, just flush it.

Anybody who don't think it's dirty, should have their evening meal served on those pieces of paper, not for me, thank you!

Do the plastic tanks require periodic emptying? Is that " O ring tank " as you called it ?

    ^ Wiz o Oz
Why isn't your shit a concern of yours? Isn't that the problem here ? Disposal of shit?

Everyone needs a septic field, and to recycle everything, every single little thing that can be, must be.

A healthy septic system takes care of itself, provided you take care not to put the wrong things in it.

As an analogy, if TD were a septic system, all the shit you post in it gets broken down, treated and finally washed out as harmless discharge.
