He needs exactly enough steel to cover a roof on a 10x8 house.

Dexter, people here can answer questions like this and share their knowledge but you need to be more specific and give them enough information.

What type of roof, how high is the peak, how much overhang. What sort of steel, tiles or sheet?

Try a visit to a builders supplier and they should help you.

Sorry mate, I didn't understand the question. Could you do a sketch as it's difficult to get the big picture otherwise.

To be fair he will have to buy more than "exactly enough steel to cover a roof on a 10x8 house" as it will not be to the exact length.

tell him to get some drawings done by the local draughtsman (see other threads)

then give those to a builder for a quote

This will help you if you can do sums.

    Right-angled triangles

Pythagoras' Theorem states that for all right-angled triangles, 'The square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides'. (The hypotenuse is the longest side and it's always opposite the right angle)

So for any right-angled triangle the square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides.

Another hint don't forget to double the answer as normally there are two sides to a roof.

    In this triangle a2 = b2 + c2 and angle A is a right angle.

Pythagoras' Theorem only works for right-angled triangles, so you can use it to test whether a triangle has a right angle.

You must also add on another % so you can have a stack of roofing in the garden, behind the shed, for the snakes to warm up on.

If he has a 50cm over hang on two sides and flush on the other, with a 1 meter rise in the middle of an A frame roof, he would need 461cm x 10cm X 2 of metal plus a bit extra for cocking about with. Maybe you "friend" can post for himself and chart his progress of building his beach hut?

rather intrigued reading this post along with the other one though from the OP. Could it be that "friend" is sending money over to a loved one to buy all this stuff, and is wanting to know exactly how much he is being fleeced by?

could be, but why would he be shy about that?
