Ehh, you don't let them work when you're away, do you?Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog

Seriously, they're only putting posts in and they know a lot more about doing that than I do.

I'm actually going to be as 'hands-off' as possible. Let's call it a social experiment.
Whose build was it who went of for a cuppa while the workers put the posts in for the tank and came back and they were anything but vertical.
^ Could've been any number of people.
This was my original plan too, but TSIcar and others changed my mind... I'm very interested to see how your social experiment turns out!Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog
Built my own place in 2001 here in Phuket. Got a quote for the whole thing and with a 6 months completion date with a penalty of 30,000 baht/month for over.
Took them ONLY 7 months.
Its great to get things as u want, ( well 95% :-) ) them but never never again! Had to spend every day there as if i left for a day they would do something wrong (like making closet doors opening in) and would have to be redone.
BTW Marmite. I see no closets on ur plans
The master bedroom will have a walk in wardrobe next to the en-suite. The kids will have traditional wardrobes. There will be 'shelving units' in the living room, kitchen cupboards in both kitchens and a lockable 'tool shed' for my tools.Originally Posted by Phuketrichard

OK, got some more photos of them making the posts.
This has some leaves in it (can't remember which plant) which will bring good luck. I did ask why but was met with contemptuous stare.
More luck being heaped on the house. We apparently had some Brahmin chaps over to perform the ceremony, but strangely, I didn't get an invite. I said that her Grandma would've scared all the ghosts away when she opened her gob, and was met with another contemptuous stare.
Carefully pouring the cement for one of the pads.
After pouring.
Wiring together the rebar for the posts.
And Uncle Jai Rawn bending the ends of the rebar.
At least they didn't put you in the wicker basket!
Steel fixers, the best guys on a site. Always had the best cabin, best grub and porn on their walls.
Marmite, good luck on your build. It looks like you are close in build dates to me and I have posted a thread on my progress. For my own peace of mind, I am at the sight every day and have already caught a couple of possible mistakes. If you are not able to be there, that is one thing. If you do not visit the sight while you are in country, that is another.
Keep the pics coming since it is enjoyable to see the similarity in building styles. My builder uses the water tubing for leveling constantly and have to admit that I had not seen this until coming to Thailand. I give him instructions daily and then he follows them to the best of his ability. Being on sight allows me to make sure nothing is lost in translation.
not an easy task you venturing into MM but we have the utmost confidence in your making sure of a fantastic build. Good Luck. Keep the Midget on site to set the builders straight.
The Midget was on-site today as they are preparing to do the ground level beams where the downstairs block walls will be built.
They wanted to connect all the posts at ground level with beams, but I said no, as it unnecessary and a waste of money. It will be open with a concrete slab. The Midget has had the hump as it was her dad who said it should be done. I did suggest he pay for the extra beams, so I'll not be getting any later.
standard building practice, it stops the columns from tilting any direction and makes a nice edge for the floor pourOriginally Posted by Marmite the Dog
this is earthquake country, marmite, so any extra strength at low cost should be welcome
The ring beem system of building a house is very good and strong all colomns / sau bhaan ringed at the top and bottom with inerconecting concoret beem and your steel roof perlins welded to the top of the rebar coming out of the colomns, and 1.5 mt in the ground .
