As an afterthought to my threads on building my City/Country Resorts, I'd like to comment that after I lost all faith in my Thai workmen to install waste pipes that actually sloped in the correct direction to enable efficient disposal of customer turds, my brother in law and I undertook to dig and install these ourselves.

(I worked on the principle that 'Farang' can legally do work that a Thai cannot do, and it was painfully obvious that installing sloping waste pipes was way beyond the skills of the average Thai workman).

Did I say that this was fucking hard work?? When you have a row of guest-rooms, the principle is that each toilet waste pipe connects to the main soil pipe, but with a gentle slope so as to encourage speedy evacuation of the turds/condoms etc into the septic tank.

This means that by the time you reach the guest-room nearest to that tank, you have to excavate a trench for the waste pipe that is about 5,000 metres in depth,.

Try doing that with some pathetic Thai shovel, a beer gut, 38 degrees of blazing sun and an age of 52 years...

I actually shed 4 kilos in weight doing this manual labour, and I now look like a .. er ... 51 year old.

Anyway, this superfit farang 'gorsan' will hire himself out for shit pipe installation at the attractive rate of 4 large Leos per day.

BTW, did I say that digging pipe trenches was fcuking hard work?? Cos it was...

From my experience of drains, I have to agree that many Thais do not understand the principles of water flow, never mind shit flow

but have you never heard of supervision? get them to dig the trench and make sure the pipe is correct?

your wife looks like she understands you though; it was probably her that made you do the digging so you would look a year younger

Agreed. My ex-wife (the mad one) would NEVER do any hard work, preferring to direct others to do so. (I used to annoy her by asking her to clean the toilets at my last hotel - I knew what the response would be!)

This new wife is actually my GF from 8 years ago, long before the days of my ex-wife. It took 5 years of hell with my ex to make me realise what a good catch the original GF was.

Well, actually my statement about 5,000 meters depth was a tiny exaggeration. I followed the recommended fall over distance (which is not great), but my challenge was to squeeze in the poo pipe and the waste pipe from the showers into a small area, and then to feed them into the relevant septic tank, fat catcher tank, dry well etc etc - doing all this in the heat of high season

Actually UBC calls for 1/8" per foot slope, but if you want the shit to really move use the suggested 1/4". Oh, ea, downhill is best. Good post.

I did pipe laying for 18 years. A quarter bubble on a 1.6m pipe is okay for foul, and less for storm. Never ever did it to measurement.

Depending on the length of run and how many bends it has to its final destination, I hope you addded some clean-outs along the way before you buried it.

The slope is fine. I took a dump and it appeared in the septic tank - my BIL confirmed this. End of story.

Yes, I have clean-outs and access points for small Burmese boys to crawl in to manually scrape the sides of the pipes with their tongues - all eventualities are covered....
