    screenshot please

MSE was using a bit more than 3MB last time I check, also it's integrated into the system, so system process might be more RAM intensive because of MSE

NOD32 which is light, takes already 40MB

so screenshot will speak more than web propaganda

you sure you are not confusing KB with MB ? found this on the web for propaganda

While the PC is idle, the VM for Avast is higher than AVG and AntiVir:

    * Avast is taking 63MB Click to view image. of virtual memory
    * AntiVir is using 58MB Click to view image. VM
    * AVG is running with 35MB Click to view image. VM

256MB RAM is actually enough for running WinXP, you simply need to optimize the system and remove the usual MS garbage that slow down the whole system, takes one hour to do

    https://teakdoor.com/computer-news/95...-boost-xp.html (Ready Boost XP)

Would you like it as a screenshot too ?

^ that's hardly trashing everything MS, more like the usual unuseful MS garbage

you do know the difference, don't you ?

    ^ don't think it's showing all process though, it's also win7 isn't it ?

will look at my WinXP laptop with the old copy of AVAST and do a screenshot for comparison

other websites report 50MB for AVAST, which is more logical than the 8MB reported by MS

see here, other process are involved and there are not showing on your screenshot

    Avast Memory Usage

Like I mentioned, I'm a long time user and I've just noticed recently that Avast appears to be using a large amount of memory.
    ashServ.exe 92,348 K
    ashMaiSv.exe 34,108 K
    ashWebSv.exe 33,864 K
The only thing that I could think to do is to turn off resources that aren't being used like Instant Messaging protection and the P2P shield
but those won't draw resources unless those programs are in use right?

Take all the RAM out of it, and downgrade it to Windows XP.

Perhaps you should suggest one of your famous registry mods to solve his problem.

Avast is an excellent free anti-virus and has proven to beat MSE on many AV comparative sites. http://www.av-comparatives.org/image...ummary2010.pdf

Please to the OP DO NOT listen to anything butters says regarding computer technology.
