    Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor

The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor is now available for download on the Microsoft Download Center (8.3MB). This tool is meant for those who are upgrading Windows on their current rig. It will examine your PC's processor, memory, storage, graphics capabilities, and lets you know if you can run the 64-bit version. The tool tells you your upgrade options and informs you about any known compatibility issues with the most commonly installed software programs and devices connected to your PC. If an issue can be resolved, it suggests next steps for you to take before installing Windows 7. The tool checks against the following Windows 7 system requirements:

    1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
    1GB RAM (32-bit) / 2GB RAM (64-bit)
    16GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20GB (64-bit)
DirectX® 9 graphics processor with WDDM (Windows Display Driver Model) 1.0 or higher driver

    Are you Windows 7 compatible?

When it says it isn't compatible, it means they won't support it.

In practice, that means when you install Windows it may not find Windows 7 drivers for all of the hardware, but if you search on the manufacturer's site you can most often use the Vista drivers without any problem.

The only problem you might face is if the network drivers aren't there. Then you'll have to download them on another PC and move them over via USB drive or something.

One of our top bods had a brand new top of the range Sony Vaio, and when Windows 7 came out I was very surprised to see they didn't support it.

I think it's a bloody disgrace, they obviously didn't want to do the work because they'd rather people went out and bought a new machine.

We got it working on there anyway, without problem.

Funnily enough I bought a conference phone thingy that worked with XP, and although the vendor promised Vista support once it was released it never came. Their website was flooded with complaints from people who felt they'd been ripped off.

When Win7 came out, I dug it out of the cupboard and plugged it in. Fuck me sideways if it didn't detect a Windows 7 driver, install it and work first time.

    Very strange.

They probably can't be bothered in case you have problems afterwards

Take it to Pantip Plaza or Fortune, they will get it working on Windows 7

What model is your Sony Laptop ?
