2 routers, 1 adsl connection question

Ok I have a few routers, but only one internet connection, at present the adsl telephone cable goes into the ground floor, then is run up to the 4th floor to a router, from the router are lan cables for 4th and 5th floor, but now I need one for the ground floor, the normal way would be for me to go into poxy Pattaya to tuk.com and buy 20 meters of lan cable, but, what if I spurred off the ground floor connection to another router on the ground floor and then run a normal short lan connection to the pc there? Would it work?

Nope. One ADSL line -> one router. You can use additional routers or switches to extend the network but there'll be only one gateway.

You'll need a network cable between ground and fourth floors... (router could be on either)

I can confirm that this is correct. One router per line.

Can you put another router downstairs, so you have:

ADSL line > gateway router > downstairs router

Then from the downstairs router, you can connect to the existing router upstairs and directly to the terminal downstairs. Never tried this (going router to router) would it work?

^ wouldnt help as he'd still need to run a network cable between ground and 4th, which is what he wants to avoid.

Just set up a wireless router where the ADSL modem is and be done with it. Desktop wireless cards are dirt cheap. Almost all laptops built in the last three years have onboard wifi..

Get a wifi router you cheap bastard!!

Not sure a wifi router would do the trick, my building is quite big, plus I have 2 floors hard wired already.

For the wifi to reach the ground floor is around 30cm of concrete, with a usb wifi thing I can just chuck that out of the window and leave it hanging outside.

You will have to do trial and error. The antenna should be placed where you have the best reception.

If you have one of those 3G wireless dongle thingies, you can buy a 3G wireless router (as opposed to ADSL) and plug it straight in. This can be your downstairs internet wired or wireless. Then you don't have to bugger about doing anything else.

Sure, but it would be replacing the phone cable, so still just one cable running upstairs, probably the tidiest way, but yeah still gotta buy the cable.

Make sure you get Cat 6 or later type LAN cable so it is gigabit compliant. Don't want to have to be replacing it later when you find out your Cat 5 cable is obsolete.

Cat 6 cable is 18thb per metre in Network Time, 2nd floor Panthip in Bangkok if anyone needs any. Other places in Panthip will try to rip you off and/or sell you cat 5.

I've just put a gigabit ethernet network into the house myself so I can stream content from room to room and access everything that is connected to the network including all the computers, blu-ray players, media players amplifiers and tvs.

Something I've been considering; what do you plug it all into?

If you only have a couple of drops, plug everything directly into the router. If there are more lines than ports on the router plug everything into a switch and then the switch into the router.

The only way to do it would be to connect the router downstairs, the run a lan cable to the router upstairs and run it in bridge mode.

Might as well just leave it as it is and run a lan cable downstairs.... 20m ones are dirt cheap.

Alternatively purchase a wifi access point and connect to your existing router (you need a spare lan port) and through a cheapo wifi card in the machine downstairs.

At the moment I've got a USR Wireless router with 3 wired and 3 wireless devices, and a wireless bridge into the bedroom where I have another three devices wired into that.

I want to network my 6Tb of media to all devices that can handle it, but over wireless it gets a bit choppy - I have choice of going 108Mb everywhere or going the wired route, and haven't really made my mind up yet.

I think there is my answer, I have wifi cards already, probably have a 5 meter lan cable spare, so just need the wifi access point to chuck out the window
