How's your broadband speed? How many Gbits?

Old news, but I am getting on a bit...

75-year-old pensioner has fastest broadband | News | TechRadar UK

A 75-year-old Swedish woman currently has the fastest broadband connection in the world.
Sigbritt Löthberg, from Karlstad in central Sweden, enjoys a massive 40Gbps connection - many thousand times faster than the average connection speed delivered to homes. It's the first time such a high speed has ever been delivered to a home user anywhere in the world.

What would this old lady need such a quick connection for ? Seems like she just wants to show off.

I think her son is some kind of internet expert, and she is being used as a showcase. In the UK they have 20mb fibre optic broadband, which ain't bad, I thought...

Sigbritt is now able to enjoy 1,500 high-definition HDTV channels simultaneously. Or, if she doesn't find anything to watch there, there's also the option of downloading a full high-definition DVD in just two seconds.

The ultra-fast connection speed has been achieved by a new modulation technology. It allows data to be transferred directly between two routers up to 2,000 kilometres apart, without any intermediary transponders.

The distance is, in theory, unlimited - there is no data loss as long as the fibre is in place, according to Karlstad Stadsnät.

"I want to show that there are other methods than the old fashioned ways such as copper wires and radio, which lack the possibilities that fibre has," said Peter Löthberg, who works at Cisco.

The fibre technology behind such high speed connections is "technically and commercially viable," Jonsson said.

"The most difficult part of the whole project was installing Windows on Sigbritt's PC," Jonsson added.

I would have thought Amazon, Google or YouTube or some large web hosting company has the quickest internet connection in the world.

The technology sounds great, seems like the bottle necks would become the routers that need to be quick enough to process millions or billions of packets per minute.

Not sure; everything tends to move forward, so maybe in a few years we'll have GB pipes here?

Probably driven by demand, and is there anything we need extra bandwidth for at the mo? I can do everything I wanna do...

I have 10 meg down and 1 meg up in Bangkok. That's okay for now...

D/ling a high definition DVD in 2 seconds sounds fine, but what sort of port would you need on your computer...? Certainly Ethernet wouldn't handle it.

    That's sounds pretty good.

How much and who with? Can you get fibre optics in Thailand? I know some companies have it, but is it available residentially.

I've got 6mbit from True at 1000 baht per month, it's fine, no problems.

My ISP is TOT now. Paying 1,100 Baht (including tax).

There is a small scale availability of fibre in Bangkok already. True have some condos/apartments linked up along Sukhumvit, but it is very limited at the moment and a lot more expensive, although still within my budget. 30 or 50 meg speeds are on offer (I think 3 meg upstream...which isn't very good on a symmetric line, why do they have to make it asymmetric?). They are looking to roll this new service out quickly though. It should be available to you if you are in central Bangkok fairly soon I'd have thought....

This fibre optic roll-out looks exciting. I agree that the limits on upstreaming (or is it downstreaming?) are a bit of a pain...

TOT seem good, but when we wanted a connection they either didn't answer the phone, promised to return our call but never did, or just gave a 2 month waiting list. True turned up straight away and have always provided good service - far better than the cableTV option (that I outed: it's gay!).

I know fcuk all regarding computers and when watching streaming videos they seem to take ages. I'm with TOT and have supposedly 6MB speed. I checked my speed and it comes up as Download Speed 473kbps and Upload Speed 188kbps. Is this correct and acceptable ? Thanks
