Will a newer souped up computer provide more clarity when I use Skype or is it all about internet connection?
TRUE is pretty fast most of the time these days, but sometimes Skype is a not 100% clear.

it is more about internet connection - just for voice you do not need much speed , but you need good latency.
and remember that it is both ends.
if you are both using ADSL/cable/fibre then the latency will be the least normally , but if one end is using a wireless connection - wimax / HSDA / CDMA then the latency can increase dramatically.
if both are using a wireless connection it can be nearly like an old sat phone.
the other thing you need to be doing is optimising both ends Quality of service for skype packets - ie. skype packets get maximum priority in the router queue.
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.
I have basic TOT 1 MB ASDL connection and I have no "Skype" problems what so ever. A great service.
Probably not much I think, unless the comp you are using has a really, really ancient sound card. Are you using headphones with a little microphone or using the comp's built-in speakers and mike? Using headphones with a mike and proper calibration can make a good improvement on a slow 'net connection, especially if you have background noise like a noisy aircon or fan running or road traffic passing by etc.Originally Posted by chitown
I think he is probably talking about configuring things to give priority to Skype data packets:Originally Posted by chitown

This time.
I use a stand mic and speakers and get a great service. My boss moans a bit though, unless I have the mic right up to my gob.
I changed to a usb skype phone from a head set and it was much better.
Me too, and my mike is OK at 2 or 3 feet away, and I make a lot of calls to USA.Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog
I don't know about my sound card,, it might be new as Jim put some new card in my puter awhile back.. I don't member what it was as I know shit about these things.
Everything crystal clear using the integrated cam and microphone of the iMac.
you could just get a skype wifi phone
or if your phone has wifi , just install the skype client on it
then try with nothing else powered on your network except for the wifi access point and modem
yes , tell your router that any packets originating from the ports skype uses get numba 1 A+++ priority in the queueOriginally Posted by slackula
I know shit all about the technical side of the net but I do know I have a crap connection that gets to 300 kb/s on a good day.
With that I manage two way video conversations with fine audio and smooth pictures.
I do have a small mixer and a mic that may be considered DJ quality here. That allows me to transmit reasonable quality audio usable on a radio station.
Be happy dudes. It's a lot more fun than crying.
Just asking Marmite, but have you tried turning the Mic up through Sound Controls?
When it came out Skype worked Ok on 56k Dial Up if you weren't using it for anything else.I know shit all about the technical side of the net but I do know I have a crap connection that gets to 300 kb/s on a good day. They spent a lot of money developing their compression/decompression algorithms, that's what set them apart from the competition.
I have it turned off, so it doesn't come through my speakers.Originally Posted by harrybarracuda
^ Dunno, but I guess Skype turns it on when necessary.
ask The Gentlemanis Camp - he has a mate in sid-any who has a showOriginally Posted by mr Fred
If you're worried about the bandwidth streaming live, you either need someone to take your feed and re-broadcast it, or (if "live" isn't absolutely necessary) you should consider Podcast.
There's loads of places that will host Podcasts for you.
