I have never downloaded any torrent material, and am not sure what the minimum hardware requirements are. I am currently using a CAT-CDMA phone connection at 115 kbps, which I fiqure is probably way to slow. I am led to believe, that I can buy a device from CAT that will let me download at 3 mbps, for about 6000 baht. Knowing what I do about CAT, this 3 meg will most likely be much slower. As I am out in the bush here in northern Thailand, the only connection that I can get is a wireless one from CAT. One thing in my favor is that I am less than a 1/2 km from the nearest antenna, so I always get a good strong connection.

My question is, what is the minimum transfer speed that I need to be able to download movies and music??

I'm sure you can download movies and stuff with what you have now, question is just what download speed you will get.
I would recommend you to install BitTorrent, then get your torrents (movies etc) from either Download music, movies, games, software! The Pirate Bay - The world's most magnetic BitTorrent site, or even better the Thai download forum at: Pantipnews Forums " Sharing Community " - Powered by vBulletin (go down to the entertainment section)
I got some really good speeds from that last one, cos many of the 'seeds' are in Thailand. Some movies were downloading at 300kb/sec last time I tried. I have a 4Mbit ADSL from True in BKK.
